Description
Book Introduction
The first step in studying aquatic beetles and stink bugs

Most beetles and stink bugs live on land, but there are quite a few species that have adapted to aquatic environments.
However, compared to terrestrial groups or other eutherian insects, information is scarce.
This book selects 71 species of beetles and 33 species of stink bugs commonly found in aquatic environments across the country and describes their morphological characteristics.
And to help you distinguish the groups in a broad sense, we've provided a family key.
Because the key classification information is accurately organized, it is highly useful as basic data for observation, education, and research.

Publisher's Review
Water beetle, water snail, water snail, water snail, water general, water snail… …
Beetles and stink bugs live in the underwater world too.

Have you ever seen a water beetle with air bubbles on its butt?

Aquatic beetles have entered aquatic ecosystems at least 10 times in the evolutionary history of beetles and have adapted to them more than 20 times.
So they live in a variety of environments, including rivers, springs, lakes, ditches, groundwater, and even under ice or in highly saline ponds.
In Korea, 167 species belonging to 67 genera and 13 families have been recorded (as of 2021), and the representative species is the water beetle, which was very common in the past but is now endangered.

From slender salt striders to mighty water generals

Aquatic stink bugs are divided into true aquatic stink bugs that live in water and semi-aquatic stink bugs that live on the surface of the water.
Adult stink bugs can fly, but adult stink bugs have long or short wings, and some have no wings, so they cannot fly.
There are 84 species in 14 families and 34 genera in Korea (as of 2021).
This group includes the common salt strider and the now very rare water general.

I hope we can meet not only in memory but also in reality

Children observe black water beetles, large water bugs, whirling water beetles, and scurrying water striders in the local stream.
It's a scene that's vivid in my memory, but hard to see these days.
As the aquatic environment is damaged by various developments, winged adults leave their existing habitats, and wingless larvae and species disappear without being able to find new habitats.
This book, which covers 71 species of beetles and 33 species of stink bugs that live in water, is also a record of our earnest hope that they will remain not only in our memories but also in reality.
