Description
Book Introduction
Korea's first locust ecological guide

The locust is an insect that everyone recognizes, but little is known about how it lives.
The author, an elementary school teacher, raised and observed locusts with children for over four years to uncover the life cycle of these locusts.
Based on this information, we conducted additional research and study over the next four years, and added data verified by mantis researchers around the world to thoroughly describe the appearance characteristics and life history of eight mantis species recorded in Korea.

Publisher's Review
Every moment of the praying mantis is vivid and full!

Laying the foundation with children's curiosity
This book is based on data obtained by the author and children from Obi Elementary School in Geoje-si, Gyeongsangnam-do and the Geoje Elementary School Nature Exploration Club 'Sky River' while raising locusts for 1,553 days from 2014 to 2018.
The children cared for the locusts with care and constantly asked questions, and the author went out with the children to find answers.
So, this book not only contains information about locusts, but also contains the hearts of adults who support children's attitude toward living things without prejudice and help their curiosity lead to continuous learning.

Locusts 0 to 10
We observed and recorded the entire process from hatched larvae growing from the 1st to 7th instars, sprouting wings, mating, laying eggs, and hatching of those eggs.
Rather than just showing the life cycle in broad terms, we looked at each stage in detail.
When and where each species lays eggs, where and in what shape the egg cases are attached, what is the hatching period and amount, how the larvae change in appearance according to the molting stage from the 1st to the 7th instar, and how they grow wings.
If you follow the clock hands of a locust's life from 0 to 10, you will realize that it is a synapse.
The world of this tiny insect, which is only about 10 centimeters long, shows just how big and heavy the weight of life is.

A reasoned appearance, a reasoned action
The locust's signature look is that it raises its front legs together.
In English-speaking countries, this must have looked like praying.
As you can see, the name is praying mantis.
However, locusts adopt this posture when they are angry, about to hunt, attacking an opponent, or showing off.
The peaceful image that the English name gives is different from the actual appearance.
That doesn't mean it's scary.
They are quiet hunters who hide in places where prey is likely to appear and wait for it.
Grasshoppers are also neat freaks.
They constantly clean their antennae and eyes, which often become dusty, and their forelegs, which retain food debris.
This book is full of interesting ecological information about locusts, and it would be a good idea to pick out the characteristics of locusts that impressed you and describe them.
