Book Introduction
Saltwater Flows on Mars

Salt water, salty water, and a derogatory term for a person born and raised near the sea.
"Saltwater Flows on Mars Too"** is a book written by artist Kim Hwa-yong, who was born and raised in the "salty water" of Incheon, based on research using "salt" as a medium.

This book illuminates the modern and contemporary history, labor, and life of the West Coast, starting with the salt farms where salt is produced.
It specifically depicts the intersecting stories of salt farm workers, displaced people who lived on the tidal flats, and workers who migrated to coastal factories in the city of Incheon.
The author does not stop here, but expands his gaze to the ecological situation in Asia.
It connects the diverse flora and fauna of the tidal flats and intertidal zone, migratory birds, halophytes, and mangroves, as well as other hybrid entities, to the lives of people on the west coast.
Through this, it weaves a story where domination and resistance, life and material, and life and death intersect, and evokes a liberating imagination.

This book was designed by designer Kim So-eun of Around Lab and showcases designs that connect the environment, ecology, and society.
Kim Hwa-yong's experimental writing is realized in a unique typesetting layout reminiscent of a coastline.
This book was created after over four years of research and three domestic and international exhibitions.
The back of the book includes photographs and captions taken by the author, as well as an index of 480 key eco-political keywords, to help readers connect the dots.
