Joseon Dynasty Astronomical Phenomena Records (Part 2)
Description
Book Introduction
Joseon Dynasty Astronomical Phenomena Records (Part 2)
Hyojong (1649-1659) ~ Sunjong (1907-1910)
This book is the third collection of records of astronomical phenomena in Korea, following 『Collection of Records of Astronomical Phenomena in the Three Kingdoms Period』 published in 2014 and 『Collection of Records of Astronomical Phenomena in the Goryeo Dynasty』 published in 2020.
The approximately 20,000 astronomical phenomena recorded in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty are divided into three volumes, covering the reigns of Taejo (1392-1398) to Injong (1545), Myeongjong (1545-1566) to Injo (1623-1649), and Hyojong (1649-1659) to Sunjong (1907-1910).
In addition to the original text, a Korean translation is included, and, where necessary, information for reference in the records is attached.
We hope that this book will be useful for the research of scholars in related fields, and that it will serve as a basis for the publication of expanded editions of astronomical phenomena from the Joseon Dynasty, as recorded in various documents such as the Seungjeongwon Diaries and the Donggung Diaries.

Publisher's Review
《Collection of Astronomical Phenomena Records of the Joseon Dynasty》 is the product of a massive effort to compile astronomical records that are important for understanding the history of Korean astronomy and the Joseon Dynasty.
This three-volume series compiles records of astronomical phenomena spanning approximately 500 years from the reigns of King Taejo to King Sunjong, using the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and related historical materials.
Each volume is categorized by period, clearly presenting the historical background and astronomical events of the early, mid, and late Joseon periods.
The first volume covers from Taejo to Injong, the second from Myeongjong to Injo, and the third from Hyojong to Sunjong.
Each record is presented side by side with the original text and translation, making it easy for both researchers and general readers to utilize.
In particular, by using both the lunar and solar calendars and introducing modern terminology and paraphrasing, he succeeded in reinterpreting past records from a modern perspective.
Additionally, the appendix, which provides detailed explanations of each astronomical phenomenon, adds to the academic value of Joseon Dynasty astronomical records.
《Collection of Astronomical Phenomena Records of the Joseon Dynasty》 is an academic work that crosses the boundaries of astronomy and history, helping to deepen our understanding of the Joseon Dynasty's worldview and scientific interests at the intersection of history and science.
It will be an essential resource for researchers, while also providing an engaging reading experience for readers interested in the culture and scientific achievements of the Joseon Dynasty.
