In one study involving 100 participants, scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine, and the University of Jena in Germany examined cortical folds between meditators and controls to see if there were any differences in their brains.
Scientists found that meditators had significantly more wrinkles in their insula compared to controls.
They also found that the insula of experienced meditators had more wrinkles than that of less experienced meditators.
The results suggest that meditation may be associated with cortical folds in this region, particularly in experienced meditators.
