Publisher's Review
『2026 Worship and the Pulpit』 Has Changed Like This!
ㆍ The order of worship for each week and the text commentary and sermon guide according to the church calendar/Bible are included together to ensure that ‘worship’ and ‘the pulpit’ are in harmony in name and reality.
ㆍ The reading of the psalms is presented together with the reading of the hymns according to the Bible so that the leader can choose the reading that suits the situation.
ㆍ The titles of the notes and sermon guides are indicated separately to fully reflect the author's intention.
ㆍ The sermon text is provided through comparison with the Korean Bible (Revised Version, New Translation Bible, New Hangul Bible) to enable a more faithful interpretation of the meaning of the original text.
ㆍ Includes Sunday sermons, seasonal sermons, and national holiday sermons from Advent (November 30, 2025) to the last Sunday of the 2026 church calendar (November 22).
ㆍ A separate section titled ‘Season of Harvest and Gratitude’ tailored to the Korean context.
The Korea Institute for Practical Theology (Chairman: Professor Lim Hee-guk) published “2026 Worship and the Pulpit According to the Church Calendar and the Bible” (Korea Christian Literature Society).
This book was first published in 1987 by pastors and theologians from across denominations who sought to revitalize the pulpit and worship of Korean churches. It is published every year at the end of October.
"2026 Worship and Pulpit" contains sermons for 52 weeks in chronological order according to the church calendar, from Advent in 2025 to the last Sunday of the church calendar in 2026 (Christ the King Sunday). It also includes commentaries and sermons that can be used for each holiday, Children's Day/Parents' Day, and major national commemorative days such as March 1st Independence Movement Day, April 19th Memorial Day, the Korean War, and August 15th Liberation Day.
We have designated a separate section, 'Season of Harvest and Thanksgiving,' specifically tailored to the Korean context, to assist in the preaching of Korean churches.
This book, which provides commentary on the Bible text and sermon guidelines (sermon composition) for each week according to the church calendar and Bible study, was written by approximately 90 professors and pastors in theological schools, including Professors Kim Hyeong-dong (Busan Theological University), Kim Hoe-kwon (Soongsil University), Bae Jeong-hun (Theological University), Yoon Cheol-won (Seoul Theological University), and Cha Jeong-sik (Hanil Theological University), as well as Pastors Bae Yo-han (Shinil Church), Lee Sang-hak (Saemunan Church), Ji Hyeong-eun (Seongrak Holiness Church), Kim Man-jun (Deoksu Church), and Jeong In-gyo (Gangnam Theological Seminary).
In particular, the order of the Sunday joint worship service of Seoul Jeongneung Church (Pastor Eunho Park) is presented as an example, and the theological meaning and recommended form of each order of worship are presented in detail through ‘Order and Commentary of Sunday Joint Worship Service’ by Professor Myeongsil Kim (Worship Studies) of Yeongnam Theological University.
Professor Lim Hee-guk, chairman of the steering committee of the Korea Institute for Practical Theology, said in the introduction, “A transformation of civilization is urgently needed for humanity, which is facing frequent natural disasters and a serious climate crisis,” and emphasized that we must face the anxiety and confusion brought about by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI).
He also quoted Karl Barth's cry, stating that the essence of God's Word, which must be preached in this age of great transition, is revealed when we recognize and acknowledge the tension between what we "should" say as pastors and theologians and what we "cannot" say about God as human beings.
In his foreword, Pastor Jihyeong, the co-representative, reminded us of the spirit of a “church that is always reforming” and emphasized that “the essence of Christianity is the Word becoming life.”
He added, “Before a pastor can be a pastor, and before a preacher can be a preacher, he must first stand before the Word as a Christian.”
2026 Sermon Preparation Forum Held
To coincide with the publication of this book, the Korea Institute for Practical Theology held the '2026 Sermon Preparation Forum with the Korean Society of New Testament Theology' at Saemunan Church in Gwanghwamun (Pastor Sanghak Lee) on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, to help field pastors prepare their sermons.
This event was followed by lectures on “Understanding the Text and Sermon Preparation through Comparing Versions” by Professor Kwon Yeon-kyung (Soongsil University), “Introduction and Utilization of the Zurich Bible Commentary” by Dr. Lee Du-hee (Korean Bible Society), and “Order and Commentary of Sunday Joint Worship” by Professor Kim Myeong-sil (Yeongnam Theological University).
Following its launch in Seoul, the institute is now touring the provinces to hold similar events.
