A picture book about social situations to prepare for elementary school entrance.
Description
Book Introduction
How do children feel about entering elementary school?
Graduating from kindergarten or daycare and entering elementary school is the biggest event in a child's seven-year life.
Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents all look forward to this day and congratulate the little one on becoming an elementary school student.
The children are also very excited.
Buying new bags, new clothes for the entrance ceremony, receiving books as gifts, and buying cute school supplies, the children are excited about the biggest event of their lives at age 7, and are finally becoming elementary school older siblings.
I wanted to give this excitement to children with disabilities.
Will I be able to adapt well to school life?
Won't I fall far behind other kids?
Will you participate well in class?
Are you getting along well with your friends?
Children with disabilities begin elementary school with more adult concerns than expectations of a new beginning.
I created this picture book with the children in mind, standing at the entrance ceremony with anticipation rather than fear.
This book consists of five stories and an appendix.
The scenes from the story are depicted in warm illustrations so that even children who are not good at reading can easily understand the story.
'I am 7-year-old Hoon' allows us to imagine what elementary school is like through Hoon's first visit to the school.
'I Bought a New Bag' depicts Hoon happily choosing a bag and school supplies with his grandmother who came to congratulate him on his new school year, and wondering which one would be best.
'I Became an Elementary School Student' captures the school scene on the day of the entrance ceremony and Hoon's excitement and unfamiliarity.
'I Have Two Teachers' provides a glimpse into elementary school life through Hoon-i, who studies in both an integrated class and a special class.
'I like having a variety of friends' made me think about myself and my friends while looking at Hoon's self-introduction and the various appearances of Hoon's friends.
We've included an appendix with activities to help you prepare for school by becoming the main character after reading Hoon's story, such as making your own book, decorating your class schedule, finding and introducing your strengths, making a garland for your school entrance party, and making a friend book.
At the end of each story, there are brief notes on conversations and activities that adults can engage in with their children while reading the book together, as well as a Q&A covering common questions parents have about their children entering school.
I hope that children about to enter elementary school will have fun and excitedly preparing for school with Hoon, the main character of this book.

Publisher's Review
This book is a story about social situations written by a teacher who worked in a special education class at an elementary school for over 20 years.
Social situation narratives are short stories that can help us interpret and understand social situations.
Children with developmental disabilities, in particular, often feel anxious in unfamiliar and unexpected situations.
In this book, look at the pictures with your children and predict and prepare for upcoming situations.
I hope you can imagine the school, which is much larger than kindergarten, and shake off the unfamiliarity and fear by practicing the entrance ceremony.
There may be some awkwardness at first because there are many teachers, friends, and seniors, but you can look forward to meeting a variety of friends and having more fun.
The most important point this book makes is that entering elementary school is a momentous occasion worthy of celebration and requires encouragement and support from both children and parents.
This characteristic is particularly evident in 'I Have Two Teachers'.
The message is that not everyone learns in the same way at school, and that getting an education that suits you can be beneficial.
This will be a warm message of encouragement not only to the children, but also to the parents who will be experiencing school life for the first time with their children.
This book is a good read for all children experiencing school for the first time, parents who are new to school, new teachers who are wondering what advice to give to incoming students, and other teachers who are curious about elementary school life for students with special needs.
