“Lloyd Jones’s ‘Spiritual Depression’
“A wonderful prescription for the suffering of the soul, and a superb classic!”

The classic work "Spiritual Depression," a masterpiece by Martin Lloyd-Jones, the greatest preacher of the 20th century and a revivalist of countless souls over the past 50 years, has been republished.
Spiritual stagnation is a very common phenomenon not only in the time Lloyd-Jones preached, but also among the early church members and among us living in the modern era.
When we experience stagnation or encounter those who are, we wrestle with unresolved questions like, “If Christianity is truly good news, why do Christians feel unhappy?” and “Can true Christians also fall into stagnation?”
In this book, Spiritual Stagnation, Lloyd-Jones focuses clearly on this fundamental topic and offers practical prescriptions for Christians to achieve spiritual health.

As he watched the congregation gather at Westminster Chapel on Sunday morning, Lloyd-Jones felt the need to preach on the topic of "spiritual stagnation."
Because of the two world wars and the social upheaval that followed, there were so many unhappy and depressed Christians.
Because a stagnant Christian cannot properly represent the gospel, he combines his medical experience with his excellent biblical interpretation to uncover the root causes and treatments of "spiritual stagnation."
The 21 sermons included here are a moving portrait of a soul-seekers' concern for the spiritual health of the saints.

This classic, published half a century ago, is still relevant to us living in the modern era.
Like a great doctor who meticulously and persistently examines a patient and eventually discovers the root cause of the illness, the causes of stagnation he meticulously analyzes are extremely real and contemporary.
Moreover, the treatments and final solutions he presents are concrete and practical, and are more than enough to stir our souls to run toward a true Christian life.
To the churches and saints of this land who are spiritually distressed and discouraged, Lloyd-Jones' "Spiritual Depression" will proclaim a full restoration.

Commentary

Into the book
The ultimate cause of spiritual stagnation is unbelief.
Without unbelief the devil can do nothing.
Because we listen to the devil's words instead of God's, we yield to him and fall to his attacks.
This is why the psalmist keeps telling himself, “Put your hope in God.”
_ 'Chapter 1.
From 'General Considerations' (p. 31)

Faith is thus the silencing and subduing of unbelief.
But the disciples were unable to do so and instead became immersed in the situation and fell into a state of panic.
Faith is the refusal to be so.
“I will not be controlled by this situation.
Rather, it is saying, “I will take control of this situation.”
It's me taking control of the situation and pushing myself forward and taking control.
It's about insisting that I don't leave you alone.
(…) Whatever situation arises, stop for a moment and wait.
“I also admit that the situation is difficult.
But… say “…”
"But" what does it mean? God exists! The Lord Jesus Christ exists! What else should I think about? I must think about the fact that I am saved! This is what faith does.
_ 'Chapter 10.
From 'Where is your faith?' (pp. 205-206)

We must be able to confess that as the years go by, we come to know God better and love Him more.
The more you get to know someone you like, the more you become like them and love them.
We can expand this infinitely and apply it to our relationship with God.
Are we getting to know God better? Are we truly pursuing Him? God knows that we risk becoming so absorbed in ourselves and our own experiences that we forget Him.
So, by disciplining us with boundless love, He makes us aware of the danger and brings us back to Him, and protects us from the terrible dangers that constantly surround and threaten us.
