Book Introduction
How did John Sonmez, a common developer, retire at 33?
“I have been on many different journeys during my life as a software developer.
Sometimes I found the right path, and sometimes I didn't.
I received little help or guidance during this process.
No one ever showed me the way.
“I have never met anyone in my life who has shown me how to succeed as a software developer.”
Author John Sonmez wrote this book because he wanted to create a concise guide packed with information and advice to help you make a living as a developer.
To share and pass on what I have learned through success and failure, and what I have seen and heard from many people, until I retired at the age of 33.
It's packed with advice that will reboot a developer's life.

Publisher's Review
The gateway to employment was passed through technical skills.
How do we pass through the gateway of life?
Are you a team member who only knows how to code?
The days of developers working alone are over.
We live in an era of working as a team and collaborating with other teams.
Communication skills for dealing with people and building relationships, as well as conflict management, negotiation, and problem-solving skills, are just as important as code.
A true professional is someone who knows code, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Throw it away.
Seek simplicity, not complexity.
The author of SimpleProgrammer.com has found that people tend to think things are more complicated than they actually are.
Don't waste your life trying to solve complexities.
Even problems that seem complex actually have simple solutions.
We must learn how to increase productivity while pursuing simplicity.
A common developer's guide to life: Manage Your Life
Don't just manage your code, manage your life.
Managing life requires stamina.
Build your confidence by developing healthy lifestyle habits and achieving your goals.
This confidence helps you view yourself positively and cultivates an attitude of not being afraid of failure.
Also, if you want to be financially free, don't be obsessed with money, but rather earn and manage it.
Let's learn by accurately understanding assets and liabilities, studying them, and actually investing.
[This book's target audience]
Developers in their 20s and 30s who want to study programming languages and start a career as a developer.
Developers in their 30s and 40s who are building their careers as developers
[Author's Preface]
Author: John Sonmez
I've had quite a diverse journey as a software developer.
There were times when I found the right path, and times when I didn't.
Some roads I'm still not sure if I've found the right path.
Of course, there are many people who have influenced my life.
There are many people who have taught me not only in software development but also in many other areas.
I feel like I owe some of my success to those people.
However, I have not found a person or guide that has provided all of the following information in a concise manner.
- How to manage your career.
And how to make the right choices when it comes to career-related issues.
- Effective learning methods.
How to maximize productivity.
How to overcome when you feel discouraged or have lost your courage.
- Basic knowledge needed to manage finances and maintain physical and mental health.
How these factors affect me as a software developer and as a human being.
The reason I wrote this book was because I wanted to create such a guide.
At the very least, I wanted to do my best to convey what I've learned through my experiences, and what other developers, financial managers, fitness experts, and motivational speakers I've met have learned from their experiences.
I wrote this book because I felt it was a waste to let what I had learned and experienced go to waste without sharing it.
This book was written for you.
I hope it makes your journey a little easier, helps you become a little better, and most importantly, helps you feel like you're not walking alone.
Did this article inspire you? If so, great.
Now let's go!
[Translator's Preface]
Translators: Im I-ryeong, Kim Tae-gon
Many developers, when they first start out in the world of developers, mistakenly believe that all they need to do is acquire skills.
Of course, I was no exception.
Now, after going through a lot of trial and error, I've realized that skill doesn't play as big a role as I thought.
I still think it's the most important factor, but if you only focus on skill, you might miss out on something bigger.
The author of this book refers to a large part of this as 'soft skills'.
Soft skills refer to skills such as interpersonal skills, language, habits, communication, and leadership, as opposed to hard skills, which refer to core job competencies.
It is generally an unfamiliar or difficult field for developers.
If you look around, you'll probably find a colleague or acquaintance who is excellent at programming but lacks soft skills and thus isn't properly recognized.
The reason I initially volunteered to translate this book was because I hoped it would be helpful to many developers.
Now that I've finished translating and reviewed it a few more times, I have a lot to think about.
The parts I was worried about were the parts I was worried about, and the parts I wasn't worried about were the parts I wasn't, so it became an opportunity for me to look back and examine myself.
In particular, I could relate to the marketing section because I was already practicing a lot of it. As for the productivity section, I became interested enough to install related programs. As for the health and finance sections, I read them with a somewhat reflective mind because I had always felt that I was lacking in them.
Some may see it as just another common self-help book, while others may find it less useful because of the different context from the United States.
But even if you don't follow the book's content exactly, the questions the author raises through this book are worth thinking about.
Perhaps, like the readers who gave the book a five-star rating on Amazon, you might deeply sympathize with the author's thoughts.
I tried my best to convey the original text as simply as possible while preserving the author's intentions and wit.
I hope this book will be helpful to at least one more developer.
