Children who study on their own
Description
Book Introduction
"Mother, This Is How Medical Students Spend Their Six Years of Elementary School" by Im Min-chan, an elementary school children's book. 9 Solutions to Improve Your Grades, According to a Current Medical Student Forcing yourself to study will eventually lead to losing your motivation. Through this fairy tale, children can learn motivation and methods to study on their own! _Highly recommended by EBS English instructor Seungik Jeong “My child has no interest in studying.” “I study hard, but my grades just don’t improve.” “I’m already worried about my middle and high school studies because my foundation is so weak.” There are many elementary school students and parents who are sighing more and more because of these worries. Why do some children thrive on their studies, while others struggle with them? There's only one reason. This is because the child was unable to develop the ability to study on his or her own because he or she could not find the reason and purpose for studying. Studying that is forced upon you by someone else, or that is spoon-fed to you by your parents and teachers, is bound to lead you astray. So how can we help children develop a habit of studying, develop a love of it, and cultivate the ability to study independently? This book, "Children Who Study on Their Own," offers the solution. The author, who has established himself as a learning expert among elementary, middle, and high school students and their parents by writing books such as 『The Secret to High Score in Medical School Admission』, 『Mom, This is How Medical Students Spend 6 Years of Elementary School』, and 『Studying is a Mental Game』, has now returned with a learning fairy tale for elementary school students. The author, who has met with countless students and parents to share his expertise in improving elementary school students' learning abilities and lifestyle habits, resonates with readers in this book by sharing his own elementary school days, when he preferred playing to studying. And he introduces in detail the study method that helped him gain confidence in his studies and improve his grades. This book is filled with concrete and practical know-how that elementary school students can immediately apply in real life, such as how to efficiently study Korean, English, math, and other subjects that require memorization, how to manage time by using a planner, and how to relieve academic stress. There is no child in the world who wants to not be able to study. Everyone wants to do well in their studies. However, this book serves as a cheerful and fun teacher to elementary school students who are wandering around without knowing how to go that way. Even children who have no interest in studying or who have always been stuck in their studies because they don't know how to study will grow into children with a solid foundation in independent study through this book. |

Into the book
“In this planner, Hyunmyung writes down the scope of her studies and her goals every day.
Of course, you can also use it when you have plans with friends or go on a trip with your family.
In short, you can think of this notebook as a schedule notebook that manages your day.”
“Brother, studying is hard enough, do I really have to write something like this?”
“Yeah, I definitely have to write it.
By writing this, you are making a promise to yourself.
It feels bad when you don't keep your promises.
The planner is your appointment partner.
And if you use this, your day will be organized and you won't waste time on unnecessary things."
--- pp.67~68 From "Hyunmyeong and Hyunjae, a fantasy couple"
“For words that are too hard to memorize, try creating a separate ‘My Own English Vocabulary Memorization Notebook.’”
“Make another note? I’m going to die from all that note-taking.”
Hyunmyung grumbled, but Areum didn't care and spoke.
“Everyone has words that they keep forgetting and can’t memorize.
Make a separate notebook for those words, and spend about 10 minutes studying only the words written in that notebook.
If you keep memorizing like that, you will eventually win.
“What is that English word!”
--- pp.89 From "What's That English Word!"
There are three differences between the reading and middle school Korean language tests.
There is no time limit for reading, you don't have to solve problems, and you can read each sentence slowly, one by one.
But that's not the case with middle school Korean language tests.
In particular, if you read each sentence slowly one by one, you may run out of time, so you should read important sentences with more emphasis and know how to quickly skip over less important sentences.
This ability is called 'reading comprehension'.
Reading is good for improving your reading comprehension, but it will also be helpful to work through reading comprehension workbooks.
--- p.99 From “Reading a Balance of Knowledge and Literature”
Wondering what the secret to being good at math is? It's not difficult.
To make math concepts your own, solve in-depth workbooks appropriate for your level, and also solve calculation workbooks to reduce mistakes.
That's all.
--- p.106 From “Mathematics Thinking Alone Determines Ability”
As you study English words, you will come across words that have multiple meanings.
This is called 'polysemy', and it's a good idea to memorize all of the meanings of these words.
If you only memorize one meaning, you will have difficulty interpreting it.
…When memorizing polysemous words, it will be more helpful to memorize them while looking at ‘examples’ of how the words are actually used in sentences, rather than just memorizing the meaning and moving on.
--- p.114 From “When memorizing English words, memorize synonyms as well”
When studying social studies or science, it's a good idea to review what you learned in school during the week by reading the textbook every weekend, and to make sure to thoroughly solve one workbook according to your progress.
As I solve the problems, I can see which parts I have memorized less.
Through this process, you can make up for your shortcomings.
The same goes for elementary school history.
It would be helpful to go through the process of solving workbook problems according to the school progress and checking whether you have memorized it correctly.
--- p.119 From “Increasing Memorization Skills by Solving Problems in Social Studies and Science Subjects”
“Hyunmyeong, you shouldn’t study while comparing yourself to others.
Remember that studying is a battle with yourself.
Everyone has different study methods, progress, and goals.
You have your own pace.
“Areumi is Areumi and you are you.”
I don't know how much strength those words gave Hyunmyeong.
Hyunmyeong thought that if he believed what his brother said and went his own way, he would eventually reach a position where he could be satisfied with himself.
Once I changed my mind like that, I enjoyed every little thing I learned.
--- pp.145~146 From “The Sweet Feeling of Studying in the Library”
In actual exams, it's also important to develop the habit of reviewing to reduce mistakes.
A representative free site that can be used is 'EBS Elementary Button'.
If Unit 3 is the exam scope for this unit assessment, go to this site, print out the questions in the form of a test paper that matches the scope, and practice solving the problems for each subject at least twice within 40 minutes.
If you practice as if it were a real situation, you will be able to demonstrate your skills without being too nervous no matter what situation arises.
Of course, you can also use it when you have plans with friends or go on a trip with your family.
In short, you can think of this notebook as a schedule notebook that manages your day.”

Publisher's Review

Hyunmyeong, who likes soccer, games, and friends more than studying.
One day, Areum enters Hyunmyeong's heart.

Hyunmyeong, who wants to become friends with Areum, who only knows how to study and has no interest in Hyunmyeong, faces the biggest obstacle of her life. To make matters worse, Hyunmyeong's awkward medical student brother, Hyunjae, appears in front of her.
Hyunjae returns home during summer vacation with the plan to make Hyunmyeong a child who studies hard.
Hyunmyeong wants to study hard to look good to Arami.
Will the two brothers' study project be successful?
The study project of Hyung-hyung, a medical student who excels at studying, and Hyung-myung, who excels at everything except studying.
Learn the special know-how to make studying a habit!
Hyunmyeong, who is starting to study for the first time in her life, is at a loss as to where and how to start.
Currently, I am helping Hyunmyeong develop the habit of studying on her own by introducing study methods for each subject and telling her various stories such as how to study and why she should study.
Hyunmyeong, who started studying for Arami and to look good to Arami, slowly grows into a child who studies through trial and error.
Although they met for the purpose of studying, Hyunmyeong and Areum gradually begin to understand each other and open their hearts.
Will Hyunmyung be able to become close with Areum as she's set out to do? And will she truly find enjoyment in studying?
The secret to getting into Seoul National University Medical School from a local high school
It's because of the study habits that started in elementary school!
Looking at the author's background of being accepted to a medical school in Seoul from a local high school, one wonders if this is really possible.
Because when you look at the current college entrance exam environment, it seems like a nearly impossible task.
However, the author emphasizes that it is not important how many academies you attend or how good the private education you receive.
They say that anyone can achieve their goals by improving their lifestyle and study methods so that studying becomes a habit.
The idea that studying becomes a habit is in line with the idea that a child will become a self-directed learner.
Studying without any sense of purpose as to why you should study is powerless.
Passive studying, where parents plan and manage the study schedule, cannot last long either.
The author finds the secret to his success in medical school right here.
To achieve this kind of active study, the author presents nine solutions.
First, learn how to write a planner and how to write it.
Second, learn reading techniques that will help you pass the Korean language test.
Third, solve math problems by thinking through them on your own.
Fourth, study English words with multiple meanings.
Fifth, social studies and science are faithful to school classes.
Sixth, you must make this a habit in your life.
Seventh, take care of your mental health.
Eighth, learn how to study for unit assessments.
Ninth, find six reasons to study.
Anyone can study well
The most honest and correct self-study method
There are no tricks to studying.
There is no way to study well without investing physical time.
No lazy genius can beat a kid who studies habitually with the strength of his butt.
Studying shows results commensurate with the amount of study done and rewards the effort put in.
If children experience the great charm of studying and gradually accumulate small achievements, they will soon become children who sit at their desks, write in their planners, and look at their textbooks.
This book is full of stories that can spark children's interest and curiosity about studying.
The story of Hyunmyeong, who is last in class at studying, and Areum, who is first in class at studying, gradually growing while making up for each other's shortcomings through studying will bring great empathy, fun, and change to all children who read this book.
Whether you're a child who wants to improve your grades or a child who really wants to excel in their studies, this book will help you grow into a self-directed learner.
ㆍ Author's Note ㆍ
To all the elementary school children and parents around the world who are worried about studying
hello.
This is Im Min-chan.
My book, “Mom, This is How Medical Students Spend Their Six Years of Elementary School,” was loved by many parents, and I ended up giving consultations and lectures to countless parents of elementary school students.
Every time that happens, parents commonly say this.
“No matter how diligently I listen to the author’s lectures on study methods or mental health management, when I go home and tell my child about it, he just thinks it’s nagging.”
“Children Who Study on Their Own” is a book prepared to solve these concerns of parents.
Just as parents want their children to do well in school, children also want to do well in school.
I wanted to solve these children's problems.
So, I put into this book all the study methods for each subject that I actually practiced in elementary school, how to develop study habits, how to use a planner, and even how to manage my mental health.
Although this book was written by me, a medical student, it is not just for students who want to go to medical school.
Rather than focusing on the goal of entering medical school, I focused on the story I wanted to tell today's elementary school children, having studied on my own for 12 years from elementary school to high school in a rural area of Jeollanam-do and entered medical school.

Am I the only one who doesn't find studying fun? I've often wondered that. But when everyone says studying is difficult and boring, I feel relieved to realize I'm not the only one who feels that way.
And I think I know how to study.
Studying math was the hardest part, but in elementary school, I was told that I had to practice solving problems on my own a lot, so I'm going to try to put that into practice.

I wanted to study hard, but I had a lot of worries because I didn't know how to do it. This book gave me motivation.
Math was especially difficult, but after building the basics, I plan to practice solving difficult problems on my own.
Studying is something that no one wants to do, but I will keep in mind that studying is about finding a goal and persevering.
_Kim ○○, 6th grade elementary school student
My daughter, a greedy third grader, suddenly said this year that she wants to study harder and go to Seoul National University, and that she wants to know how to study well.
I vaguely thought that I had to study a lot and work hard, but through this book, I was able to find a specific direction and direction for my studies.
The child said he gained confidence that he could do it.
_Parents of third grade elementary school students
It gives me hope that studying is not genetic but a matter of effort.
The information about study methods for each subject that I was curious about was very helpful.
It was good that the child could check for himself what problems there were with his current study method.
Thank you so much for sharing these advanced secrets.
_Parents of 5th grade elementary school students
Because I never studied 'how to study', I always felt like I was missing the basics.
My child also said that he would like to try the study methods mentioned in this book.
It was really helpful because it included stories about not only studying but also mental health and relationships with friends.
