Into the book
To reflect on care in nursing, we must examine how nursing views ‘health.’
In the past, the biomedical view that health meant the absence of disease was supported.
From this perspective, it is believed that health can be restored by identifying the cause of the patient's illness, that is, what is different from the normal state, and removing that cause.
Therefore, biologically identical conditions are seen as meaning identical health conditions.
However, today the concept of health has expanded from a biomedical perspective, as the World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Interdependence in a care relationship means that humans can influence and give to others through their relationships.
If moral humanity, law, and various practices are accepted as mere concepts without any relation to experience, then that person is not a human being with inherent human nature.
Therefore, as humans are experiencing beings, we can create actions, lives, and societies that allow us to grow by experiencing the value of caregivers and care recipients.
Likewise, because humans are relational and interdependent beings, we can engage in mutual care relationships.
In other words, the care relationship should be focused on the mutual relationship between the caregiver and the care recipient, between me and you.
A caring relationship is not about compassion, a disposition, or a virtue, but rather it presupposes mutuality, and it must be mutual in the sense of interdependence.
It has been revealed that care, which is premised on interdependent reciprocity, cannot be completely replaced by AI care.

Generative AI is also a notable technology in the field of nursing record assistance.
Previously, voice EMR (Electronic Medical Record) using voice recognition technology played a role in reducing the burden of nurses having to manually enter data.
In addition, generative AI enables a new recording method called “Ambient AI Documentation” by recognizing conversations between nurses and patients in real time and automatically organizing them into clinical notes.
In other words, a system is being implemented in which AI automatically creates records based on conversations between patients and nurses during routine nursing activities, without the nurse having to input or issue separate commands.
These technologies could reduce nurses' workload and enable more accurate and timely nursing records, contributing to patient safety and improved quality of care.

Nurses will serve as a bridge between AI tools and patients, requiring them to act as advocates for patient rights and autonomy.
Given the nature of medicine, where mistakes and errors are unacceptable, the hasty use of AI will have a fatal impact on patients' trust in AI.
Nurses will be responsible for educating patients about how AI is involved in their care and whether it can be trusted, and for protecting patients' right to opt in or out of AI tools.
Patients will only consent to the use of AI if they trust it, and nurses play a crucial role in building that trust.
In other words, for AI to be effectively used in patient care, nurses must first fully understand AI technology and be able to effectively explain it to patients.
Through these nurse roles, patients will be able to understand medical information more easily and accurately with the help of AI technology, and will be able to participate more actively in decision-making, such as developing nursing care plans.

Publisher's Review
Questioning the Essence of Care and the Coexistence of AI

Caregiving is a universal practice that has sustained human life, but its significance is being re-examined amidst unprecedented crises, particularly in the wake of the super-aging society and pandemic.
At the same time, artificial intelligence, a key keyword of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is rapidly permeating nursing and care settings, triggering new changes.

This book explores the current state and future of AI technology applied to nursing care, reflecting on the concept of care and its philosophical and social implications. While AI enhances efficiency in areas such as patient condition prediction, record management, and personalized nursing support, it also raises ethical and social issues.
It emphasizes that patient data utilization, privacy protection, explainability, health equity, and above all, nurses' human empathy and responsibility must remain central.
From a convergent perspective of nursing and humanities, this paper presents the potential for the coexistence of AI and care, and explores the new roles and capabilities required of nurses.
It reminds us that the essence of nursing care lies in human-centeredness, not technology, and provides a balanced perspective to ensure safe and humane care even in the AI era.
