Happy elders serving the church
Description
Book Introduction
This book was designed as a training material to create ministers who can regain influence in Korean society, where the glory of the church and its saints has fallen.
"Happy Elders Who Serve the Church" talks about the qualifications and duties that elders must have, how elders should examine themselves and work together with pastors, and how elders can serve the congregation and the church as leaders of the church.
However, this book does not simply describe rigid, job-related theories.
This book is written with ease, focusing on real-life examples from the church, so that you can fulfill your duties as a praised and virtuous church member, a fantastic pastoral partner, a peacemaker who creates harmony beyond conflict, a capable thought coordinator who breaks down blocked frameworks, an excellent family minister who makes the home a heaven, and an outstanding spiritual manager who fears God.
Through this book, I hope to become an elder who brings glory and joy to God, as the best co-worker of a pastor, and as a role model respected by the congregation.

Into the book
“Article 3, Chapter 5 of the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church of Korea stipulates the qualifications of elders as follows (please understand that the Constitution is based on the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church of Korea to which the author belongs).
"A male elder must be at least 35 years old, have been a member of the church for five years without blemish, possess considerable insight and leadership, and meet the qualifications set forth in 1 Timothy 3:1-7." So, what does the Bible say about the qualifications for an elder? In the New Testament era, elders and overseers were not distinct.
Calvin, in his interpretation of 1 Timothy 1:1, said, "The office of overseer includes pastors, elders, and other ministers chosen to govern God's people."
This word is used in 1 Peter 2:25 to refer to those who shepherd the flock and is also applied to Jesus Christ.
Therefore, the qualifications of a director and an elder can be viewed together.”
--- p.21, from “Understand the role of an elder and serve properly”
“A virtuous elder always keeps his ears open to listen.
If you close your ears to what others say, they will also close their ears and eventually the door to communication will close.
A wise elder listens to others, empathizes appropriately, and actively listens.
When expressing one's opinion in a church meeting, one must express one's thoughts and feelings in a proper manner.
The party is based on sound communication.
You should be able to freely express your thoughts and opinions.
At this time, you must explain in a simple, accurate, and logical manner so that the other person can understand.
When holding a party, there are times when communication between members is lacking.
It is natural to assert oneself.
However, you must be careful not to provoke the other person's emotions.
“Elders must abandon narrow-minded and self-centered thinking, as approaching things with excessive black-and-white logic will prevent communication.”
--- p.45, from “Become a Praised and Virtuous Party Member”
“Elders must be people who trust and encourage one another.
We need to be able to inspire each other.
We must make sure that our strengths come together in a positive way.
We must know how to strengthen each other through encouragement.
Just as geese faithfully perform their duties to achieve a shared goal while caring for and respecting one another, elders should create synergy by helping and cooperating with one another based on mutual trust.
Elders who take away the power of pastors and the motivation of church members need to recalibrate their leadership.
A leader is a motivator.
A leader is one who challenges his followers.
Elders must empower and cooperate with pastors to achieve a greater vision.
You shouldn't act according to your feelings.
Even if I don't want to, I must think of the virtue of the church first and put the happiness of the congregation first.
“I must give up and let the Lord’s work be revealed.”
--- p.179, from “Developing Influential Leadership”
“The pastor always carries a heavy burden.
A church that is experiencing revival has its own burden, and a church that is not experiencing revival has an even heavier burden on its shoulders.
Rather than just pointing fingers at the pastor and holding him accountable, the elders should ask him what he is struggling with.
Elders should be the pastor's comforters and encouragers.
Instead of just talking about your own pain, you should also listen to the pastor's words of pain.
Even if the congregation doesn't know, the elders must understand the pastor's pain.
A pastor is a lonely and isolated being who cannot share what is on his mind with anyone.
I can't share everything that's on my mind with anyone.
“A good elder does not put psychological pressure on the pastor.”

Publisher's Review
“The church will be revived only when the elders, the leaders of the church, serve!”
“Elders, rise up and become peacemakers who serve the church!”
A leader's worth is measured by how he serves.
Elders serve the church as leaders of the church and work together with pastors.
You must become a peacemaker who is respected as a role model by your followers.
“Elder, be the best co-worker of the pastor and a happy leader!”
The happy elder, the leader and peacemaker of the church,
It takes wisdom and skill to manage yourself fully.
Serve the congregation first rather than be served.
When I become obedient and devoted to God
You can become a happy leader who works with pastors.
▶ This book is for these people!
- A prospective elder who is about to be ordained as an elder by God's calling
- A novice elder who has taken on the role of elder for the first time
- Experienced elders who want to regain their identity as elders
- Pastors who wish to establish church education for ministers
- Individuals or churches wishing to give gifts to those about to take on the role of elder
Listen to a conversation in a church.
“Did you get the elder this time?”
“I didn’t get it this time either.
“It’s really hard to find an elder.”
“That’s right, I told you to spend some money a long time ago.
“There has to be something to feed them.”
It can't be anything but absurd.
Some people mistakenly believe that becoming an elder is like becoming an official.
Elders are not given, they are given.
It is given by God, established by the church, and established by its members.
If you think of the position of elder as a position and try to wield power, you will end up becoming an object of criticism and ridicule rather than an object of respect.
It was time for the elder exam and interview at a church's examination department.
A pastor asked a question.
“What do elders do in the church?”
Then the candidate answered.
“It’s the pastor’s job to supervise.”
In fact, today, there are many cases where elders or church members understand the role of elders as 'a position that keeps the pastor in check.'
Some elders try to tame the pastor to their own liking.
It is truly foolishness that comes from a misunderstanding of the role of an elder.
So, among the elders, there are those who supervise the pastor with a sense of mission, as if they were coming to church every week to find problems.
Serving the church with this kind of consciousness will inevitably make pastoral work difficult and the church will inevitably face trials.
Such elders turn the church into a den of strife and contention.
So the saints cannot help but lose their happy smiles.
I once read an article written by a person who graduated from the Department of Religious Studies at Seoul National University, received a doctorate in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary in the United States, and now serves as a professor at Seoul National University and an elder at Yeongnak Church.
“As an elder, I have been in charge of a church department twice.
Although the young associate pastors were the leading pastors, I consulted with them with respect as a pastor, and they treated me with humility as an elder and theologian.
There was no authoritarianism, let alone reign, here.
“It was really satisfying.”
The elders must make the pastor laugh happily.
You must become a respected elder who is looked up to by the congregation.
Their presence should lead to the beautiful establishment and revival of the church.
We must ask ourselves:
“Why do I want to become an elder? For whom do I serve as an elder?”
