S. Lewis's Spiritual Autobiography
A fascinating account of the author's spiritual pilgrimage from childhood Christianity to staunch atheism, and then back to Christianity.
“I wrote this book to answer those who wonder how I converted from an atheist to a Christian,” the author says, playing a harmony of objective and subjective insights about his experience of losing his mother at a young age, the suffering he endured at school in England, his outstanding achievements at Oxford University in his youth, and the process of abandoning atheism and becoming a Christian.
The title and theme of this book, "Unexpected Joy," refers to the joy the author experiences and ultimately the meaning that experience implies. It is a high-level psychology of conversion that integrates intellectual and intuitive aspects.

It includes photos of Lewis's childhood and youth, as well as illustrations he drew himself.

S. Lewis Chronology

Into the book
I wrote this book, partly to answer those who wonder how I converted from an atheist to a Christian, and partly to correct a couple of common misconceptions.
How seriously others will take this story depends on the extent to which they have experienced what I call 'joy.'
If people share even a little of this joy, this book, which (I believe) deals with joy in more detail than any discussion to date, will be of some help.
Even when I talk about feelings that I think only I know about, I say, "Oh my gosh! You felt that way too? I thought it was just me."
I was encouraged to write this book by the fact that there is at least one person (often more) who says, "I knew it."
_In the 'Preface'

Many people have the experience of meeting their first friend, and it is a wonderful experience in itself.
It is a wonder as great as first love (sorry to say this to novelists), no, it is an even greater wonder.
I had never even dreamed that such a friend could exist, and I had no more desire to find one than I had to become King of England.
… … I don’t think there’s anything more surprising than discovering that there are people in your life who are very similar to you.

Then, while reading Chesterton's The Everlasting Man, I first encountered an outline of Christianity presented in a form that seemed reasonable to me.
Anyway, I managed to avoid serious trouble.
You will probably remember me saying that Chesterton was the most discerning living writer, 'if only the Christian element were taken away.'
Now I have come to believe, with all my heart, that Christianity, if you take away the Christian element, is quite a sensible thing. _14.
