Refutation of Celsus (Books 3-5)
Description
Book Introduction
Against Celsus is one of Origen's later works, and in many ways it shows a more mature and balanced judgment than his earlier works, such as On Principles.
Considered the most complete and powerful apologetic work in all of early Christianity, this work is an indispensable source for Origen's thought given the richness and complexity of its subject matter, and it is the only volume of his voluminous works in which the original Greek text has been preserved intact.

Into the book
In the first volume of my book, which is aimed at the proudly boastful title of "True Words," which Celsus gave to the book he wrote against us, I have, at your request, my faithful friend Ambrose, done my best to examine and refute every single point of Celsus's introduction and his subsequent arguments, and I have concluded with the words of the puppet Jew put forward by Celsus against Jesus.
And in the second volume, I refute to the best of my ability all the arguments contained in the words of the Jew who accused us who believe in God through Christ.
Now I will begin this third volume, in which I refute the objections raised by Celsus against us.
--- p.13
I hope you will not think that I am in conflict with Christian teachings when I present to Celsus the testimony of philosophers who assert the immortality or survival of the soul after death.
Indeed, we share many views with these philosophers, but we could perhaps make it clearer at a more opportune time that the blessed life of the future will be given only to those who, without worshipping any creature as God, have purely and completely embraced the reverence for God and the Creator of the universe that Jesus taught.
Anyway, if anyone is interested, let me explain what kind of “good things” we are trying to fool people into thinking they are.
And he must compare that excellent thing with the most blessed goal, which, according to our view, exists in Christ, who is with God, in the word, in wisdom, and in all virtues.
This most blessed goal is destined for those who have lived a blameless and pure life and have demonstrated an undivided and perfect love for the God of the universe, and it will be realized in them by God's grace.
--- p.117
Our primary task now, to repel Celsus's continued attacks, is to clearly demonstrate the truth of the prophecies concerning Christ.
But Celsus is fighting two sides, so to speak: on one side are the Jews who deny that the Messiah has already come and hope for one to come, and on the other side are the Christians who claim that Jesus is the Messiah foretold by the prophets.
And in the second volume, I refute to the best of my ability all the arguments contained in the words of the Jew who accused us who believe in God through Christ.

Publisher's Review
About this series
This series is the result of the 『Ancient Christian Literature Translation Project』, which received government subsidies from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and has received approval for further publication and sales from the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea, the supporting project and copyright holder.
We have selected authoritative modern patristic texts faithfully translated into English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and other languages and translated them into beautiful and accurate Korean.
These books, which touch on the origins of the church, will help you understand not only the Bible but also the 'Holy Tradition' more deeply.
Since patristic literature is a common Christian heritage that must be preserved and nurtured by Catholics, Orthodox Christians, and Protestants, I believe that this effort to return to its source will contribute steadily to the movement for spiritual unity.
Throughout early Christianity
The most perfect and powerful apology!
On the Celsus Refutation
In fact, in church history, Origen is not classified as a full-fledged apologist.
As far as we know, among Origen's numerous works, the only one of an apologetic and polemical nature is Against Celsus.
However, Against Celsus is not only one of his most important works, but is the undisputed pinnacle of all apologetic literature of the early Church.
When he began writing this polemic, Origen was at the height of his creative powers and possessed a wealth of knowledge in an extremely wide range of fields.
In this way, he produced what has been called the most extensive apology ever written in Greek—the only Western counterpart is Augustine's City of God—and the most complete and powerful apology in all of early Christianity.
Against Celsus is one of Origen's later works, and in many respects it shows a more mature and balanced judgment than his earlier works, such as On Principles.
He revised or supplemented several previous views, which is why this work has been compared to Augustine's Reconsiderations.
Furthermore, Against Celsus is the only one of Origen's great works whose original Greek text has been preserved in its entirety, allowing us to clearly understand the theologian's position based on the original text.
Moreover, considering the richness and complexity of the subject matter covered, Against Celsus is an indispensable source for elucidating Origen's thought.
Origen repeatedly emphasized that Christianity, along with its theories and practices, must be subject to objective verification, for he was convinced that it was precisely in this area that the superiority of the Christian faith was revealed.
