Into the book

There are books, documents, and writings in the world in quantities that seem endless.
In other words, the records of human wisdom and reflection are so numerous that one wonders whether even one can empathize with even a ten-thousandth of them, even if one reads them from birth to death.
There are also an abundance of records of knowledge and wisdom in our native language.
Including overseas Koreans, the number of people who communicate in Korean is estimated to be around 80 million.
The amount of information currently being created in Korean, along with past records, can be enormous.
I find myself happily imagining that someday, if the Korean language gains a significant international standing, its status might change.

Well then, what about English?
Two countries in North America, two countries in Europe, and two countries in Oceania speak English as their native language.
There are also many countries in Africa, Asia, India, and elsewhere where English is used as a second language.
If we go down a level and include countries that treat English as a language of communication, there are about 100 countries, including our country.
In terms of user numbers, approximately 700 million native speakers and active users, and including passive users, approximately 1 billion people use English as a direct or indirect means of communication.

From the perspective of sheer number of users, Chinese and Spanish are not negligible, but the languages of these countries are not considered international languages.
It is a failure to gain international influence in the flow of world history.
Moreover, the Chinese language actually has a very large regional variation, so it is considered very difficult to cover the entire Chinese region with a single Chinese language.

There are still issues of unification of opinion and institutional improvement before English can truly establish itself as a second language among Koreans as a means of communication.
So even today, in our lives, numerous English-related keywords are being searched, including English, English education, English tests, everyday English, English for entrance exams, English for civil servants, English for transfer, English for studying abroad, English for immigration, English for immigration, English for tourism, etc.

In fact, simple English for communication can be acquired through open sources, and with enough effort, you can improve your level considerably.
However, high-level intellectual records that require a precise knowledge of English are simply an alien language(?) without a very serious effort.
Even if you can write and understand a few expressions gleaned from visual media, you should never neglect reading to understand the records that require ten thousand emotional codes and a hundred thousand knowledge codes at the same level as the author and share the harvest with the same degree of joy.

When we read English texts, we tend to focus on the content and not the language itself.
So, I always read the interpretation or translation first, summarize the content, and then put the English version aside.
Translation work was born from exploiting the intellectual laziness and limitations of these ordinary people.
When professional translators translate English text into Korean in the most understandable way, you can simply pick up a spoon and chopsticks and savor it.
But now, the world is changing.
If you have to wait for information through the indirect process of translation, you will ultimately fall behind in the intellectual race and limit yourself.

Another drawback of existing Korean translations of English texts is that they may mislead you.
Translation must objectify the meaning so that it can be understood equally by everyone.
As a result, we inevitably end up using a lot of paraphrasing.
For example, if you translate the sentence “Even Homer sometimes nods” into Korean, someone might say “Sometimes, even Homer nods his head in laughter.”
However, this is not a translation that will allow all Korean speakers to understand it at the same level and speed.
If another translator paraphrased it as “Even monkeys fall from trees,” it would probably be easy to understand.
So, is the latter the ideal translation? No.
If you want to completely ignore background knowledge about the cultural sphere and only convey the final intention, the latter translation may be better.
However, those who read the text only in this paraphrase have not gained any information related to Homer in English and have simply eaten what others have fed them.

Homer is the English spelling of Homeros.
This person is a Greek figure believed to be the author of the Iliad and the Odysseia, two literary works that form the foundation of Western culture.
The Iliad is a vast intellectual legacy of 16,000 lines that deals with the Trojan War.
If it were sung by a poet, that is, someone who recited poetry in the form of a song using an instrument called a lyre, he would have to have an unimaginably excellent memory.
If you consider how many songs you know the lyrics to perfectly and how long they are, you can imagine what kind of person it was to accomplish this incredible feat.

Here, 'nod', which corresponds to 'nodding', was used to mean that a scholar or a sincere person nods while dozing off, and was usually used as a symbol when insincere people were doing research or studying.
If the English sentence above were translated as 'Even a great scholar-poet like Homer sometimes nods his head' and a footnote about Homer was added below, it would be one of the ideal translations.

We do not aim to simply read translations.
I hope that through this book, you will be able to compare and analyze how each English sentence best fits the Korean context and structure, and as a result, gain more than just what is contained in this book.
Translation is a process of objectification, but interpretation is a highly personal and subjective experience.
A delicate balance is always needed to keep the boundary between free translation and literal translation from collapsing.
It is a task that highly demands vocabulary, knowledge, and expressive ability.

I hope you will create your own translations and internalize the expressions of the advanced texts.
I hope that your efforts will bring commensurate results and intellectual competitiveness.
