My first meeting with the children in the classroom in March 2019 was marked by unusually fine dust.
During the golden time when children should be developing good relationships through play, there were many days when they could not go to the playground, and the auditorium could only be used once a week.
Seeing children feeling sorry for not being able to play in the playground to their heart's content, and seeing teachers feeling sorry for not being able to play with those children, I started to think hard about classroom activities one by one and started to put them together.
For the second book, I wanted to include more fun, sweaty, and active games that are played in the classroom.

Just looking at a few statistics that appear in newspaper articles, such as 'Korea's children and adolescents' happiness index ranks last among OECD countries', 'Suicide is the number one cause of death among adolescents', and 'One in five children and adolescents experience suicidal thoughts', it is easy to see how unhappy the lives of our children are.
I believe that there is nothing like 'play' to help children form healthy relationships with other friends and have fun and happy experiences.

Although 'Teacher Heo's Spare Time Classroom Play' was published in June 2017, it is still one of the most beloved books among many teachers in the field of 'education'.
As the title suggests, which already anticipated concerns about 'fine dust,' this book has become even more necessary in schools in 2019.


In March and April, when we should be building relationships with children through play, every time we tried to go out to the playground, the health center sent a message saying, ‘No physical education on the playground.’ And every time, the children cried out in frustration in the classroom because their physical education classes were suddenly canceled…
With gym class only available once a week, the best option was to play with the kids in the classroom.
But what to do? The teachers' worries deepened as they faced the children's desperate gazes, at a loss.


In 2019, I participated in the Ministry of Education's "Character Education through Play" project for one simple reason: I wanted to think about ways to make children have fun playing in the classroom and share them with teachers.
In the midst of such a series of worries
(1) The supplies can be easily obtained in daily life.
(2) Children can enjoy participating even if they do it repeatedly many times.
(3) We selected games that children can enjoy playing together, taking advantage of the biggest characteristic of play, ‘spontaneity’, so that the teacher’s role can gradually disappear.


By drawing pictures to make it easier to understand each scene, I was able to easily explain parts that were difficult to understand in writing.


“As children play, the ‘we’ grows in their hearts, rather than ‘me.’” I believe this will be of great help not only to those in education but also to everyone who needs play.
I hope that teachers and children will become happier through ‘Classroom Play that Captivates Children.’
