Work and Calling: Life on Earth, Continued Eternally
Work and Calling: Life on Earth, Continued Eternally
Description
Book Introduction
Dr. John Lennox, a world-renowned mathematician and Christian apologist, guides us through his own experiences and the Bible to understand the true meaning and essence of work.
Many people think of work as a "result of sin," but Dr. Lennox shows that work is part of God's amazing plan, and that even God Himself is at work.
Additionally, Jesus' Sermon on the Mount reveals what truly motivates us in our work and life, and how our work connects to eternal meaning.
It analyzes the biblical validity of the common belief that church ministry is more important than general occupation, and also presents ways to wisely utilize various forms of wealth to spread the gospel.

Into the book
The work was God's plan.
Genesis tells us how everything began.
The first thing this book teaches us is something fundamental to the entire biblical narrative: that God is a working being who created and ordered this world.
And the way he worked became the universally familiar work week pattern of six days of activity and one day of rest.
--- p.36

Dorothy Sayers says:
“Fundamentally, work is not something you do to live.
Rather, humans live to work.
Work is (or should be) the full expression of the abilities of the person doing the work.
People find spiritual, mental, and physical satisfaction in their work.
And work is the means by which man offers himself to God.
--- p.90

In fact, the concept of full-time ministry is dangerous because it can create the misconception that there is such a thing as part-time Christian ministry.
This reinforces the artificial 'secular-sacred divide' that is prevalent within the church, ultimately limiting the expansion of the gospel message.
--- p.155

What happens at the judgment seat of Christ is the evaluation and rewarding of believers for what they have done in their lives.
This is by no means salvation through work.
The work that is dealt with at the judgment seat of Christ is not salvation, but reward for work.
Furthermore, Paul explains the principle by which each person is judged there:
“Why do you judge your brother? Why do you despise your brother? We will all stand before God’s judgment seat.
For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
“So then each of us will give an account of himself to God” (Romans 14:10-12).

Publisher's Review
Now, your workplace can change!
When work continues into eternity, it becomes a calling!

This book presents a balanced, biblical perspective on work and calling, making it a must-read for any working Christian! It's a collaborative work, combining the rich experience and in-depth biblical study of Dr. John Lennox, a lifelong mathematician and apologist.
Books about work or calling are often either too theoretical or too focused on personal experience.
However, this book, by appropriately incorporating my experience as a professor and apologist onto the biblical narrative about work, serves as an excellent guide to work and calling.

This book willingly brings to the surface the uncomfortable questions we harbor deep in our hearts but try to ignore, such as, "Is work really a result of sin?", "Is worldly work less valuable than church work?", and "Is what I'm doing now meaningful only on this earth, where it ends when I die?" These questions, stemming from misunderstandings and prejudices, are brought to the surface.
As we focus on Dr. Lennox's writings, our old and incorrect ideas about work will soon be reorganized.
And you will discover true joy and hope in your work.

In the midst of your daily routine, what meaning does your work have? Do you perhaps view work as merely a means to earn a living, or as arduous labor imposed upon you by sin? Are you caught up in the dichotomous notion that church work is "sacred" and worldly work is "secular?"

Work is God's amazing plan.

In his book, Work, Calling, and Life on Earth: A Life That Leads to Eternity, world-renowned mathematician and Christian apologist Dr. John Lennox clearly demonstrates from a biblical perspective that work is not a result of sin, but rather part of God's amazing plan for creation.
It shows us that God Himself is at work and helps us realize that all our work can be connected to eternal meaning.
