The purpose of this book is not simply to list a long blueprint for a collaborative model.
Rather, the true purpose of this book is to illuminate how these shifts in human behavior render obsolete the institutions created by the capitalist era and the core values we still rely on, and to explore the new values and institutions that will propel the coming era of cooperation.
The great American revolutionary Thomas Paine once said, “Every age and every generation must have the freedom to act independently.”19 Our new generation is nurturing the embryonic zero-marginal-cost society, changing our worldview and giving new meaning to the human journey.
What if the marginal cost of human labor in producing and distributing goods and services plummeted to near zero? What if intelligent technologies replaced workers across all industries and across all professions and technical fields, allowing businesses to conduct civilized commerce more intelligently, efficiently, and cheaply than traditional labor?
This is also a shift that is already occurring as tens of millions of workers in several industries and occupations around the world are being replaced by intelligent technologies.
What will humanity do if mass and specialized labor disappear from economic life within the next two generations? More importantly, how will the future of humanity on Earth be defined? These questions are now beginning to be seriously addressed among intellectuals and in public policy discussions for the first time.
I can also say with near certainty that the struggle to define the future economy in the real world will revolve around the question of what kind of infrastructure we need for the coming era.
