"The Blade of Drive" is a memoir dedicated to "Mulholland Drive" by author Sa Yu-jin, a film director with 25 years of experience.
David Lynch's masterpiece, Mulholland Drive, has long been the subject of interpretation by the public and critics due to its abstractness and difficulty.
A difficult-to-understand story structure, a complex and unconventional narrative, and ambiguous metaphors and symbols.
His films, which seem to be a tug-of-war between reality and fantasy, have presented a strange charm and curiosity at the boundary between art and the public.
At this point, 『Drive's Edge』 reinterprets the multi-layered worldview of 『Mulholland Drive』 through the lens of 'philosophy', vividly recording the meeting place of art and philosophy.
As this is a humanities and arts book written from the perspective of a film director, I tried to make diverse use of film terminology and directing in the overall structure.
The text begins by revealing the encounter between Mulholland Drive and philosophy through 'Crank In' and the 'Opening Scene', and then sequentially introduces the theories of various philosophers through the main scenes that follow.
From the ontological explorations of ancient Greek philosophers, to the modern exploration of reason, to the unconscious and ideology of 20th-century philosophers…
Although it unfolds along the lines of philosophical and ideological development, it never loses sight of the single thread of "Mulholland Drive," allowing you to feel the thought expanding steadily as each scene unfolds.
Above all, it is noteworthy that this book is the first in the author's planned series, 'Watching Movies with Philosophy.'
