Dieter Rams' Aesthetics of Minimalism
Description
Book Introduction
Dieter Rams, the icon of minimalist design!
'Less, but better'
A word from Dieter Rams sets the standard for design around the world, including Apple!
Dieter Rams: The Aesthetics of Minimalism is a single-volume archive that compiles all of Rams's work from over 60 years of work at Braun and Bichoe.
From everyday masterpieces like electric razors, radios, calculators, and furniture to previously unreleased prototypes and experimental works, you can encounter over 300 designs chronologically.
Each product is meticulously detailed with its production background, materials, and design context, providing an answer to the question, "Why has this item been loved for so long?"
Rams' minimalism philosophy goes beyond mere aesthetic taste; it is a lifestyle that eliminates the unnecessary and focuses on the essential.
This philosophy directly inspired Apple's Jonathan Ive and Steve Jobs, and today the 10 principles of 'good design' have become a textbook for designers around the world.
This book is not just a simple picture book.
The first catalogue raisonné to cover all of Rams' products, it captures Dieter Rams' creative process, his constant experimentation, and his design ethics that were ahead of their time.
Based on his close collaboration with Rams, author Klaus Klemp offers a three-dimensional account of how one designer changed an era and continues to influence the present day.
It will serve as a timeless design bible that answers the essential question, "What is good design?" for design practitioners, researchers, and enthusiasts alike.

Into the book
Are the products we design truly necessary? Will they truly enrich our lives, or will they simply serve as a means of demonstrating social status? Can these products be repaired? Will new products dominate me? I believe this last question is particularly important today.
The most important lesson I've learned from working as a designer for over 60 years, gaining experience at two companies, and experiencing it as an end consumer can be summed up in this short phrase:
'Less, but better.'
--- p.6 From "Preface, Dieter Rams"
Since the early 2000s, Braun's intuitive user interactions have inspired Apple.
For Rams, the objects we use in our daily lives have always been special.
Everyday objects deserve attention and, if possible, need to be improved or reduced.
For Rams, design did not have to be as noble and distinctive as it is instilled in us in the consumerist age.
'Back to purity, back to simplicity!'
--- p.13 From "Dieter Rams' Industrial Design Catalog Raisonné"
First launched in 1962 (102p), the Sixtant brand remains Braun's best-seller even after more than a decade.
Braun continued to introduce new Sixtant models into the 1970s.
Rams began his involvement in design with the Sixtant 6007.
Erwin Braun quickly recognized and promoted the benefits of taking distinctive design elements from Braun's high-end products and applying them to more affordable models, a strategy that ultimately led to increased sales.
--- p.198 From “1970-1979”
Among Braun calculators, the ET 66 control boasts the most balanced design and is also one of the most affordable. The ET 66 control boasts a perfect color scheme, with numbers on a black background, arithmetic symbols in brown, and memory functions in dark green.
Rams and Dietrich Rupps deliberately avoided using blue because they felt that using all three primary colors would result in too many colors in the device.
In a nod to the now-iconic work of these designers, Jonathan Ive designed the calculator app for the first Apple iPhone based on the ET 66 calculator.
Since 2013, the ET 66 has been re-sold as a Braun branded product by Xeon in the UK under the name BNE001BK.

Publisher's Review
The ultimate design archive that encapsulates the aesthetics of simplicity.
A compilation of the 60-year design life of Dieter Rams, a master of 20th-century industrial design!
This is a unique archive and design reference book encompassing the 60 years of design life of Dieter Rams, a legend of 20th-century industrial design.
Rams redefined the aesthetics and functionality of countless everyday products, including electric shavers, radios, calculators, and furniture, at Braun and Vitsoe, and changed the standards of design worldwide with his design philosophy of “Less, but better.”
Rams believed that products should eliminate unnecessary decoration or complexity and maximize essential function and usability.
He emphasized that “design is not just the shape of things, but it also determines how we live and how we relate to one another,” expanding minimalism from a mere aesthetic tendency to an attitude toward life.
This philosophy also directly inspired Apple's Jonathan Ive and Steve Jobs.
Inspired by Rams' Braun products, Ive created modern yet intuitive product designs for the iPhone, iPod, and MacBook.
Rams himself also positively evaluated the fact that his design principles were realized worldwide through Apple, saying, “Apple has achieved what I could not.”
From his 1947 student sketch of the Z-chair, to Braun's SK4 radio, T3 pocket radio, ET66 calculator, 606 shelving system, and lesser-known experimental prototypes, even handbags he created for his wife and friends—this volume chronicles every product he designed throughout his life.
Each piece is detailed with details on its production story, materials, and design context, transcending the mere collection of artwork to offer answers to the question, "Why are these objects so beautiful and loved for so long?"
Author Klemp is a professor at Offenbach University of Art and Design in Germany and a curator at the Frankfurt Museum of Applied Arts, and is an authority on design theory and practice.
He worked closely with Rams, unearthing vast amounts of material and unpublished records to illuminate Rams' creative journey and design philosophy in three dimensions.
Rather than simply providing a biography, Klemp delves into how Rams's designs have transcended time and influenced the world, and what design principles remain relevant today.
Furthermore, Rams emphasizes in the preface that “design goes beyond the mere form of things; it determines how we live and how we relate to one another.”
His insights permeate the entire book, providing timeless inspiration and practical resources for design practitioners, researchers, and enthusiasts alike.
It goes beyond a simple collection of works and establishes itself as a true bible that explores the essence of design.
It is not a simple designer biography or pictorial,
The Inspiring 'Original Minimalism'
The first catalogue raisonné to encompass all of Rams's work from his entire career, it includes not only famous works but also unpublished experimental works, prototypes, and variant models.
This allows us to see at a glance the entire creative process, how his designs evolved, failed, and were challenged again.
Each product is accompanied by a concise description, detailed specifications, and production background, so it goes beyond simple pictorial or aesthetic appreciation, and allows for a concrete understanding of how Rams's designs have developed in conjunction with technology, society, and user experience through actual products.
Author Klemp focuses solely on Rams' design output, objectively documenting and analyzing all of his products.
It shows Rams' design journey as it is, without any mythical packaging or exaggeration.
There are hardly any portraits, and the focus is on hundreds of product photos, drawings, sketches, and prototype images.
In addition, it contains Rams' design philosophy and 10 principles, his influence on contemporary designers, and deep insights into design ethics and sustainability.
Rams's introduction and author Klemp's commentary raise fundamental questions about why and how design should be created.
While other design books offer inspiration and aesthetic appreciation, this book will serve as a practical and systematic resource for practitioners, researchers, and enthusiasts alike, worthy of being called the "original source of design."
Insights that penetrate the essence and future of design
An answer to the fundamental question: "What is good design?"
Readers don't just see beautiful products; they gain a deeper understanding.
You can see specifically how the 10 principles of 'good design' that influenced Rams throughout his life - innovation, practicality, aesthetics, clarity, durability, honesty, environmental friendliness, and minimalism - are implemented in actual products.
Product-specific commentary, behind-the-scenes stories of production, unpublished drawings, and records of the design process provide practical inspiration not only to designers but also to planners, marketers, creators, and anyone else who strives for creative problem solving.
In particular, the questions Rams poses, such as “Is this product really necessary?”, “Is it durable and repairable enough?”, and “Is it easy for the user to handle?”, lead us to deeply reflect on what products and lifestyles we should choose in today’s consumer society, environmental issues, and technological advancements.
"Dieter Rams: The Aesthetics of Minimalism" provides design students, practitioners, brand planners, and anyone contemplating a "better life" in their daily lives with insights into the timeless essence of design and its future.
This book will be a design textbook you can refer to for a lifetime and a source of inspiration.
