Homage to Park Chan-wook (Recovery)
Description
Book Introduction
Park Chan-wook, a tribute to cinema!
『Park Chan-wook's Homage』 is the first collection of reviews written by a film critic before becoming a director. It is a revised and expanded edition of 『The Secret Charm of Watching Movies - Videodrome』(1994), which had many film enthusiasts waiting for a long time since it went out of print.
We revised 70 existing articles and added 55 new film stories, bringing the total to 125 articles.
If 『The Secret Charm of Watching Movies - Videodrome』 had a strong tendency to popularize the unique tastes of B-movie enthusiasts, the revised and expanded edition of 『Park Chan-wook's Homage』 introduces a wider variety of films, guiding readers into a deeper world of cinema.
It covers films that have not yet been released in Korea, as well as "cursed masterpieces" that have been neglected even in their home countries, and newly interpreted "cult films," and will also help us gain a glimpse into the background that shaped the world of director Park Chan-wook, who is recognized both domestically and internationally.
Not only did he explore masterpieces such as “Idaho,” “The Silence of the Lambs,” and “The Day After Tomorrow,” but he also explored relatively neglected B-movies (“Addiction,” “Second,” and “Attack on Titan”) and genre films (“RoboCop,” “The Staircase,” and “The Unforgiven”), re-evaluating them from his own perspective.
This book can be said to be an homage to the films that Director Park Chan-wook likes and respects, and even to the entire film genre.

Into the book
The 'joint of narrative' that connects the skeleton of the composition while tying the knot of the story is the monologue here.
The monologues of Leslie Cheung, Andy Lau, and Maggie Cheung are all in the form of a kind of reminiscence, but the audience cannot know when and under what circumstances they are reminiscing.
If we know anything, it's only about their past.
It is a confusing dream rather than a happy memory, a dream too beautiful to be a nightmare, and a depressing dream too good to be a good dream… … .
〈Abijeongjeon〉 is a mysterious dream.
---From "Mystery Train to a Place Stranger Than Hong Kong┃Abijungjeon"
Wim Wenders' road movie, which has always questioned human identity, now speaks for itself and takes on the identity of civilization, or more precisely, technology, as its subject.
And the conclusion that comes after deep reflection is a refreshing praise.
We should call this attitude compromise rather than neutrality.
---From "Around the World in 80 Days┃To the End of the World"
The story begins under beautiful and bright sunlight and gradually moves into a dark and unclean environment and indoors.
Money realizes that he can never be free from his past, that he is becoming increasingly addicted to violence, and that he will eventually end up in hell.
Although the subsequent editing identifies Delilah with his wife, salvation is already too late.

Publisher's Review
Director Park Chan-wook's first collection of critical essays, which embodies the primal human desires, guilt, and reflections on salvation through his own unique mise-en-scène, has been republished with a new cover.
Director Park Chan-wook, who has won awards at the Cannes Film Festival (for “Thirst” and “Oldboy”) and the Berlin International Film Festival (for “I’m a Cyborg, But That’s Okay”) and the LA Film Critics Association Award (for “The Handmaiden”), and is invited to various international film festivals several times a year, is scheduled to release his first new film in six years, “Decision to Leave,” starring Tang Wei, this year, and is also busy preparing an HBO drama starring Robert Downey Jr.
In addition, in his first solo exhibition in 2021, “Your Expression” (Kukje Gallery Busan), unlike his previous film works that focused on people, he presented photographs of still lifes and landscapes from around the world that the director discovered himself, excluding people.
These are the results of a deep look into the emotions that the vitality found in visual objects that seem like 'inanimate objects' brings to oneself.
Although it seems like he had a smooth ride from the beginning thanks to his impressive resume, there were, of course, twists and turns.
His debut film and subsequent works in 1992 did not garner the expected response, leading to a bitter hiatus for the director, who worked part-time as a film critic and at a video store.
He revealed that there was a time when he wrote solely to make money, and it turns out that he first stood out as a critic before becoming known as a film director. In his writings, we can discover the source of imagination and inspiration for Park Chan-wook, the representative director of South Korea.
"Park Chan-wook's Homage," a selection of 125 films based on his tastes, is a tribute to the films that satisfied his curiosity and passion for cinema.
This cover has been redesigned with two photos from Director Park Chan-wook's previously mentioned photo exhibition, "Your Expression."
This is a photo of the shadows beyond the stairs illuminating an unknown path.
This book contains not only his appearance as a film director, producer, and critic, but also his side as a photographer.
