Description
Book Introduction
Continuous research and practice for Korean language classes where students and teachers 'partner'!
For classes that do not alienate students and classes that deepen their thinking.
The Korean Language Class Research Group's Attempts and Pathfinding
Teachers Struggling to Deliver Meaningful Korean Language Classes
"Let's Start Korean Class" is a new book by Danbi, which has been consistently publishing educational books for teachers and instructors who are struggling to make classes more meaningful and fun. It contains the fruits of seven years of research by teachers from the "Korean Language Class Research Group."
The 'Korean Language Class Research Group' is a research group run by 10 middle and high school Korean language teachers in the Gangneung and Samcheok areas of Gangwon-do. Since 2019, they have been working steadily to create 'classes with students' and 'fun and lively Korean language classes.'
The study group teachers met every month to discuss their thoughts on Korean language classes, their individual efforts, and the difficulties they encountered along the way, and together they sought solutions.
This book is a compilation of such stories and attempts, and can be said to be a collection of the experiences individually carried out by the research group teachers.
“Let’s go into the classrooms of passionate Korean language teachers who spend day and night researching and thinking about how to make their classes more fun and meaningful, and how to be ‘together’ with their students.
For classes that do not alienate students and classes that deepen their thinking.

Into the book
As native speakers, Korean is our language and we must learn it well, but students often have difficulty understanding the terminology and content of the Korean language curriculum.
Although Korean is used in everyday life, there were difficulties when trying to approach it academically.
Of course, it is natural that academic terminology feels difficult because it is different from everyday language, but as Korean language teachers, we had to make an effort to ensure that students could understand it well during class.
This year marks the 7th year since the research group began its activities.
The reason we gathered together to discuss and devise teaching methods was ultimately to create a class where students and teachers 'participate together'... (omitted) I hope that the class time can be enjoyable because the teacher and students participate together, and that even a single moment from that enjoyable class can help you cultivate a beautiful life.

Publisher's Review
This book is largely divided into six chapters, collecting the experiences of individual researchers in accordance with the direction the research group aims to pursue.
Following the traditional criteria of dividing Korean language classes into branches, we planned 'Poetry, Classical Literature, Grammar' classes; considering the technological advancements in media and the resulting delivery methods of works, 'Theater and Podcast, Metaverse and AI' classes; and considering the growing attention given to student-led classes and project classes for fostering convergent thinking skills, we planned 'Project Classes' by connecting the 'Novel' branch with the 'Historical' situation.
Additionally, each chapter is structured into ‘Our Concerns,’ ‘Finding Solutions, Attempts,’ and ‘And, Remaining Thoughts,’ allowing readers to follow the entire process of contemplation from beginning to end.
The difficulties encountered in the classroom were organized into 'Our Concerns' and the methods attempted by the research group teachers to solve them were individualized and included in 'Finding Solutions, Attempts'.
The realizations and regrets after the class are concluded with 'And, remaining thoughts.'
Say goodbye to boring, predictable classes! What if we taught poetry, classical literature, and grammar this way?
ㆍA class that helps us enjoy poetry and feel our lives through poetry appreciation.
ㆍHow can I make students enjoy reading the poems in the special lecture on the college entrance exam as a form of literary appreciation?
ㆍCan schools provide experiences that make students want to read more poetry?
ㆍHow can we make today's students interested in classical literature, which is still necessary in the 21st century?
ㆍHow to provide an experience of understanding grammar rules by connecting them to real-life language use?
ㆍHow can I have fun during grammar class while also studying and confirming concepts?
Teachers of the Korean Language Class Research Group conducted research while struggling with these questions.
This is because I wanted to create a class where students could understand and enjoy the subject of Korean, rather than a one-sided, lecture-style class where the teacher only lectures.
This required detailed and elaborate lesson planning and appropriate intervention.
By creating lesson plans for integrated classes with Japanese language classes, we interact with children from other schools, devise activities to collect children's concerns and prescribe them as 'poems,' and organize poetry recitals that are met with enthusiastic responses.
In the case of classical literature, we try to approach classical literature from an emotional education perspective and try to read it by taking advantage of the characteristics of the poetry, such as ‘reading while maintaining the rhythm of the four-note continuum.’
By appreciating the work and incorporating that experience into students' own creative activities, they are guided to gain a vivid and concrete understanding of the learning content and experience in-depth learning.
For potentially boring grammar lessons, we use 'videos' to help students analyze pronunciation and explore everyday language use with a curious eye.
Chapters 1-3 of "Let's Start Korean Class" detail the processes and concerns of these actual classes, conveying a vivid sense of thinking and researching together.
What if we approached "Korean language classes" through the metaverse, AI, theater, and podcasts?
ㆍCan auditory media such as radio or podcasts be used in Korean language classes?
ㆍWhat if you could create a 'media' to share your appreciation of literary works with your friends?
ㆍWhat if we incorporated cutting-edge digital technology into Korean language classes?
ㆍCan we re-experience the space in a novel as a metaverse virtual reality?
ㆍCan AI be used in the writing process, such as 'rewriting', which is a part of the 'revision' process?
ㆍWhat if children went beyond appreciating the play and performed a play based on it themselves?
While chapters 1 to 3 contain lessons based on the traditional criteria of dividing Korean language classes into categories, chapters 4 and 5 provide a new approach to Korean language classes based on technological advancements in media and delivery methods of works.
This is an attempt to integrate 'metaverse, AI, theater, and podcasting' into classes.
These new classes were made possible by the sincerity of the research group teachers, who considered not only the practical 'content' of Korean language classes but also the 'formal' approach in a wide and diverse way.
The space in Park Tae-won's "A Day in the Life of Novelist Gubo" is recreated as a metaverse, allowing readers to write their appreciation of the work on Padlet, present a quiz in the form of an escape room, and create a "discussion room" to lead discussions by group.
These were new attempts to study while playing, to study while having fun like a game.
Using conversational AI in writing classes to utilize AI as a tool in classes.
Within the subject of 'Korean Language', children create media themselves, share their appreciation of the works, and not only study 'plays' during class, but also put together 'plays' themselves.
When I take part in a Korean language class filled with such diverse and new ideas, I feel envious of how much fun the children in the class must have.
Perhaps the children will remember these Korean language lessons and literary works for a very long time.
A collaboration between novels and history! Project classes
ㆍLet's have students discuss and present novels in depth through project classes.
ㆍWhat if we connected the results of the project class to 'evaluation and subject-specific records'?
In this era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, students prefer visual and immediate information.
That is why it is said that in long prose classes, it is not only difficult to read the 'full text' of the book, but also difficult to ensure progress according to the number of class hours.
To ensure progress within the limited time and to complete subsequent assessments and class records, a special teaching method had to be found.
The project class 'History in Novels' was designed in this way.
This project class, designed to 'understand the historical context reflected in literary works and explore the mutual influence between literature and history,' is designed to last a total of 10 classes.
At each class, students gather in groups and record their work on a worksheet.
Each team selects five representative short stories from the history of modern Korean literature, divides roles through serious discussion, and analyzes the works through reading and discussion.
At this time, you will be able to understand important passages and character relationships in the work that you might not have discovered when reading it alone.
After viewing all the works, you will prepare for the presentation by leading deeper exploration and deeper understanding through 'creating meaningful questions'.
By deciding on a presentation topic and setting a specific project direction, a thorough research process using various research methods is conducted, resulting in rich learning.
The 10th period concludes with a discussion, followed by a book review and a report on the group's thoughts.
This chapter specifically provides examples of 'teaching and learning materials' to help you understand the class more easily.
A 10-hour class, carefully designed to foster student-led, integrated thinking, was presented in detail and in a friendly manner.
Teachers who are dedicated to providing better Korean language classes
As times change, the landscape of Korean language classes is also changing. If AI robots enter the classroom, the landscape of Korean language classes will change even more drastically.
But even if the landscape changes, the fundamental values that education pursues will not change.
To understand the ways of the world through education and to acquire the wisdom to live one's life correctly.
So, it's about enabling students to live beautifully.' A lively class filled with the sincerity of the teachers of the 'Korean Language Class Research Group' who hope that even a single enjoyable moment from class can help students cultivate beautiful lives.
We applaud and support the passionate Korean language teachers for their challenging and honest path-finding efforts.
