Book Introduction
What would happen if AlphaGo, whose Go match against Lee Sedol became a global sensation, took on human form and entered our daily lives? This young adult novel depicts the extraordinary events that unfold when an AI robot developed under a top-secret government project enters a robot pilot middle school as part of a test program.
It depicts the breathtaking battle between humans over the self-programming robot 'Fuzzy', and the warm friendship between Fuzzy and robot enthusiast Max.

It's a robot!
The robot was walking towards Max.

The appearance was really funny.
He was slightly taller than Simeon, the shortest boy at Vanguard Middle School, and was wearing childish clothes that only five-year-olds would wear.
Moreover, he wore a dark-colored wig on his head.

The face was truly… creepy.
Everything was there, but something felt off.
The pale blue eyes didn't blink at all, and the eyebrows were thick, as if drawn on.
His mouth was tightly shut.
The nose was flat overall, with only the tip being pointed.

The children laughed out loud as they watched the robot.
But Max was lost in thought.

What can we do if people make their appearance like that? A robot can't decide its own appearance.
The important thing is that it is the most advanced robot in the world.
The robot is here now.

In this school, everything is focused on upgrading.
It's also part of a new Federal Education Commission program called "Continuous Upgrade" (though students have their own names for it).
The ongoing upgrade program was seen as an 'educational revolution' that incorporated 'cutting-edge technology' like that of Principal Barbara.
But in reality, it ended up being a huge headache.
With cutting-edge technology constantly pushing students and constant testing, no one in the classroom was happy.

Teachers also had their own #CUG (short for Closed User Group, a service for exchanging information and communicating opinions within a specific group: translator) scores, so they only cared about the exams.

What's more serious is that parents are constantly receiving the latest information about their children, from test scores to demerit points.
If a student fails a test or causes trouble, parents will be notified in real time by Vice Principal Barbara.

Vanguard Middle School has a human principal, Dorgas, but everyone says that Vice Principal Barbara is the real person in charge.
That's right.
Barbara, the vice principal, is not just someone who runs the school, she is the school itself.

Everything from the entrances, cameras, screens, and sensors are connected to a central computer that runs the Barbara software.
All the janitors and cafeteria robots are under the control of Vice Principal Barbara, as well as the Q-screen repair robot, the heating pipe cleaner, the garbage disposal, and most of the metal parts designed to perform special functions that the students have never seen before.

#CUG exists to create the perfect school.
In other words, a school with good test scores, few violations of school rules, and low operating costs.

“It will take some time to get used to the concept of life in the fuzzy world.
“It’s completely different from a normal robot, but it’s not a living human either.”
“By the way, your name is Fuzzy?”
"okay.
My name is Fuzzy.”
The voice was heard again.

“Why do you call robots fuzzy?”
“Do you like it?” said Lieutenant Colonel Nina, smiling.
“It’s the name I gave you.
“Your real name is―”
“It’s confidential!” Dr. Jones suddenly interrupted.

Lieutenant Colonel Nina rolled her eyes.

“Confidential? Why is it confidential?” Max asked.

“Oh! Well.
“The reason is also confidential,” replied Lieutenant Colonel Nina.

Max felt a sense of confusion he had never felt before.

“Basically, the government wants smarter robots.
So we hired Dr. Jones' team to create the fudge.” (…omitted…)
“Anyway… It was named fuzzy because it was designed to use fuzzy logic (a logical concept that expresses unclear or ambiguous states as pluralities that deviate from the binary logic of true or false: translator’s note).
Have you ever heard of fuzzy logic?
“Oh, yes.
“The logic is that 2 plus 2 doesn’t always equal 4, right?”
“To some extent, yes.
Fundamentally, most robots and computers are designed to calculate or analyze.
It doesn't actually think like a human.
But we are trying to create robots that can think for themselves.
“Fuzzy has to figure out on his own what 2 plus 2 is.”
“Tutu,” said Fudge.

Max burst out laughing.

“Are you kidding? You know how to joke?”
“I’m not sure yet,” said Lieutenant Colonel Nina.
“We are still learning.”
Now, feel free to talk to Pudge directly.”
“Purge is the most advanced robot ever developed,” said Dr. Jones.
“It has state-of-the-art voice recognition and language processing, and it’s also loaded with slang and jargon that kids use these days so you can communicate with students like you.
If you speak accurately, Fuzzy will understand almost everything.”

A suspicious guy appeared at school!
The adventures of a thinking robot and a troublemaker duo.

(Human) “Can a robot compose a symphony? Can it transform a blank canvas into a beautiful masterpiece?”
(Robot) "Can you do it?" - I, Robot

One day, a suspicious student named Fudge appears at Vanguard Middle School, where Max attends.
He is not a human, but a cutting-edge artificial intelligence robot.
Fuzzy, the core of the government-promoted Robot Integration Program (RIP), was sent to schools to develop and perfect fuzzy logic, its technological foundation.
But on the first day of school, while walking down the noisy hallway, he falls to the floor and becomes paralyzed.
As the time approached to finalize the integration program, a serious error occurred in Purge.
The research team asks Max for help in solving the problem.
However, Max is a student who is marked as a person of interest by Vice Principal Barbara, another AI at the school, and the Vice Principal is always picking on Max.

Max's poor performance on the continuous upgrade test puts him at risk of being sent to an EC school, which is like a juvenile detention center.
However, it turns out that Vice Principal Barbara had been manipulating Max's scores in order to get him kicked out of school because he was not as well-behaved as other students and acted according to his own personality.
Realizing this, Fuzzy and Max begin to find a way to fight against the tyranny of Principal Barbara, who is like 'Big Brother'.
Meanwhile, the enormous secret surrounding Purge is gradually revealed.
Fuzzy was not just a research subject for a simple robotics integration program, but was developed to perform secret government missions.
As the Department of Defense, Sunjju, and an unidentified hacker group intertwine in a conspiracy to take over Purge, Purge and Max face another crisis...

The recent shocking emergence of Google's AlphaGo has us gripped by unprecedented concerns and worries about artificial intelligence. The visions of the future we once saw in science fiction films and novels are now becoming a reality before our eyes.
So how should we embrace artificial intelligence? This novel tackles the somewhat philosophical themes of friendship between humans and AI robots, and the free will of AI robots.
Through this story, we will be led to ask many questions: Will the emergence of AI robots truly benefit or harm humanity? Are AI robots friends or foes? If so, can we truly develop friendships with them? How will AI robots shape the future of humanity? Could human society, just as Vice Principal Barbara completely controlled the school, be controlled by AI robots?
That doesn't mean you need to be depressed in advance.
You will find yourself smiling happily as you watch 'Fuzzy', who seemed foolish at first, gradually grow into a respectable(?) student with the help of his human friends.
Is this a so-called new concept coming-of-age novel?
