Into the book
For those of you who find it hard to believe, I'll break down the efforts that led to me being crowned the Prince of Table Tennis.
Let me say this in advance, but the important thing is perseverance / determination / obsession / passion to keep trying until the end.
We call it 'grit'.
There is no such thing as a magic spell that will make a crown appear all at once.
---From "Chapter 1: What Ordinary Jack Didn't Know But Special Jack Did"

In contrast to a fixed mindset, a growth mindset is the belief that abilities are not fixed.
People who overcome challenges and achieve progress have a growth mindset.
From world-class soccer players to award-winning actors at international film festivals to the best math student in their class, those who excel in something have persevered in their fields, armed with a growth mindset.
---From Chapter 2, “I Want to Become Someone Who Never Gives Up!”

So what does this mean? If I want to excel at something, the neural signals needed to do it need to be transmitted well, and I can create the neural pathways necessary for that through my own efforts.
In other words, just as you train your body through exercise to build muscles, you can train your brain to develop neural pathways that allow you to excel at certain tasks.
---From "Chapter 3: How to Create a Brain Full of Grit"

Practicing without feedback is like practicing basketball in the dark.
The most important thing is to not think of the feedback you get from practicing as a punishment for yourself, but as a key to moving forward.
This is the surest way to learn and develop new skills and ultimately achieve your goals.
---From "Chapter 4: The Practice That Creates Excellence Is Different?"

We are now steadily progressing on our mission to achieve excellence.
You have a growth mindset, your neural pathways are growing faster than Justin Bieber's fan club, and you know effective and great practice methods.
The groove of a growth mindset is dancing throughout my body and mind.
---From Chapter 5: Are Geniuses Really Born?

“What are the limits?” I hear people asking here and there.
Marginal gains are when you break down a large goal into smaller parts, improve each part, and then combine them to achieve a significant increase in overall performance. It sounds complicated, but it's actually a very simple and powerful idea.
---From "Chapter 6 Small Steps, Giant Leaps"

One thing to note is that it is very natural for us to feel tense when we are under pressure.
When faced with threats and tension—from facing a rival athlete on the field, to a crammed exam paper, to giving a presentation in front of a large crowd—our brain releases a hormone called adrenaline.
---From "Chapter 7: When Pressure Overwhelms Me"

I'm not necessarily pushing you to become an Olympic champion, a Nobel laureate, or even the president.
I don't want to pressure you to achieve such great things, nor do I want to tell you to be motivated by things you're not doing as well as others.
It doesn't matter if you arrive at your destination four days late.
I just want to emphasize one thing.
It's about 'seeking it through to the end'.
It means taking risks, not being afraid of failure, and giving it your all to see it through to the end.
---From Chapter 8, "Nothing Can Stop Me!"

Publisher's Review
From an ordinary child to a gold medalist
A must-read for young people who want to achieve their dreams and goals!

“I can’t do anything right.”
“I can’t do it. It’s so hard. What should I do?”

What do teenagers who easily get bored and give up on anything need? Recent research has revealed that the secret to success isn't innate talent, but "grit," the ability to persevere through failure without fear.
It is becoming increasingly important to remind young people of the value of grit, especially those who easily give up at the slightest difficulty and expect quick results.
Matthew Said, a world-renowned grit expert, wrote "Grit for Teens" in hopes of helping teenagers learn the value of grit earlier and grow through it.

The author of this book is a former British national table tennis player and gold medalist.
He tells the story of how he went from being an ordinary boy to becoming one of the best table tennis players in England.
Additionally, the author personally meets the world's best athletes in soccer, golf, tennis, track and field, and through their stories, closely analyzes the process by which they achieved outstanding results.
We also delve into the brain structure to find out how you can excel at what you want to do.

In the process, the author discovers a surprising fact.
People who have achieved outstanding results, including myself, were not geniuses with innate talent or inherited an incredible environment from their parents.
Matthew Said's connection to table tennis began when his parents happened to purchase a large table tennis table.
Tiger Woods was always taken to the golf course by his father when he was a baby, and Venus and Serena happily hit 550 tennis balls thrown by their father every day.
In other words, it revealed that even ordinary people can achieve outstanding results if they do not give up despite obstacles and persevere to the end when given the chance.

It's natural to want to give up when faced with a difficult task.
What is important at this time is the mental muscle that allows you to try again without fear of failure.
This is the core of this book.
If teenage readers take this opportunity to internalize "grit," they will be able to lay the foundation for living passionately throughout their lives, beyond just grades.

How can grit grow?
The first grit class starting in your teens

How can we cultivate grit? Interviewing world-class achievers, the author reveals that grit can be developed through three elements.
First, it specifically points out the growth mindset that improvement can be achieved through effort, second, long-term training with a clear sense of purpose rather than simple repetitive actions, and third, a feedback system that constantly corrects small errors. It organizes these in stages as ‘Step 1: Create a worry jar to eliminate useless worries,’ ‘Step 2: Create a brain full of grit,’ ‘Step 3: Make a rigorous training plan,’ ‘Step 4: Recite a spell to call for a growth mindset,’ ‘Step 5: Plan a marginal gain practice method,’ and ‘Step 6: How to prepare for choking.’
So the biggest strength of this book is its clear grit training method.

Grit for Teens guides teens through their journey of self-transformation by setting real-world challenges and following practical steps.
For teenagers struggling with college entrance exams and those who give up easily, this book will serve as a practical guide to fostering grit, a valuable virtue essential for living in this world.
