Publisher's Review
“Become me so no one notices.”
A long walk with my middle school brother and his dog, Autumn.
Cartoonist Lee Yun-hee's debut work, "Autumn Wearing Glasses," has been published in a completely revised edition by Changbi.
This is a long cartoon about the mysterious events that the puppy 'Autumn' experiences at home, school, and in the neighborhood while pretending to be human.
Author Lee Yoon-hee, who was loved by both children and adult readers for her delicately portrayed first love and friendship with her comic book, "Summer of Thirteen," has published this work 10 years ago and continues to be loved. Now, she presents it anew with added stories and refined illustrations and text.
'Autumn' is a dog who lives with her mom, dad, older sister, and older brother.
When the family all leaves home, they live a free life, walking around on their own two feet and watching TV.
One day, while she was wandering around the house, thinking she was alone, her older brother suddenly appeared and spoke to Ga-eul.
“Autumn, I know you can speak.
“I’ll keep it a secret.” Then, the older brother asks Ga-eul to do his part for the time being and leaves the house.
When Ga-eul puts on her brother's glasses, strangely everyone starts to think of Ga-eul as her brother...
What kind of day will Autumn, who has become an older brother by accident, have now?
Autumn is a season that passes by quickly
The turbulent times of adolescence
"Autumn Wearing Glasses" is an interesting work with a ridiculous premise that the dog "Autumn" becomes human when it puts on its brother's glasses.
As Autumn wears her brother's glasses and goes to and from school, she begins to empathize with his lonely heart.
Meanwhile, the stray cat 'Winter' keeps watching the bespectacled Ga-eul with suspicion, adding tension to the play.
The narrative becomes richer as the story of 'Hyung', a middle school student suffering from heartbreak, is interwoven with the story of autumn.
My brother likes to travel far away by train, visit museums and amusement parks, and see unfamiliar and rugged landscapes up close.
Having traveled the world alone and had ample time for reflection, my brother returns home a much changed man.
Although he is awkward with his family, he has grown enough to express his feelings.
The time of 'hyung', who is in his puberty and becomes stronger while shaking, and the time of 'autumn', who is struggling in his brother's place, make us deeply immersed in the story.
Autumn is a season where things become more similar to each other.
A story of family and neighbors viewed with affection
What do humans look like through the eyes of a pet? "Autumn Wearing Glasses" is a work based on the author's vivid experiences with companion dogs over 12 years.
There are lively imaginations about how pets think about their owners and how they spend their time alone at home.
A Bichon Frise, a dog who loves baking and chatting, an old man and his abandoned dog who are known as strange people in the neighborhood, and a cat named Gyul-woo who leisurely wanders around the neighborhood, all intertwine in the story, creating a warm scene where animals and people live together.
Instead of the owner who only buys the baking ingredients but never makes any bread, the pet in the work is depicted as a loving friend who always thinks of the owner, like a Bichon Frise who diligently bakes bread.
Meanwhile, the irresponsible nature of humans is also reflected through a stray dog that becomes wary of people after being abandoned in a fruit box.
The author's perspective extends to the scene where an abandoned dog meets a lonely grandfather, shares its feelings with him, and forms a family.
As can be seen from the poignant encounter between the two, the warmth and comfort that comes from a deeply reliable relationship is warmly captured in 『Autumn Wearing Glasses』.
The main character, 'Autumn', was created based on a pet dog of the same name that stayed with my family before I became independent.
Of course, Ga-eul didn't speak or go to school for me, but I think Ga-eul was always there, the one who understood and looked into our family's circumstances the best.
Even when we were indifferent and awkward with our family, thanks to Ga-eul, we always looked at each other and smiled.
