Book Introduction
"English Conversation! Speaking Skills 221" aims to overcome the limitations of grammar books, which still fail to capture the changing nature of language. It includes so-called ungrammatical content directly applied in real-world situations, as well as nuanced differences that may have previously been overlooked.
Under the titles of 'Breaking Out of Stereotypes,' 'Pay Attention to Subtle Differences,' 'If You Don't Know This, You'll Be in Trouble,' 'English Like English,' and 'Expressions That Are More Convenient to Know and Use,' the book contains content that is not found in grammar books or any other books.

Publisher's Review
[1] Preface

Does it make sense that I was sick for two weeks?

One day, I got a call from someone who said he was going to an academy.
He said he called because he couldn't understand what the native speaker meant when he heard him say the sentence "I was sick for two weeks."
There was an inquiry asking whether the sentence above was wrong because when a sentence contains "for + period noun" or "since + point in time noun," the tense should be the present perfect of have + pp.

A grammar book can’t contain all the rules…

Here, we first need to talk about what grammar is and its properties.
Although grammar is a collection of rules for speaking a language, it has two blind spots: it cannot contain all the rules in a grammar book, and it cannot reflect the ever-changing evolution of language.
First of all, there is no need to include obvious rules in a grammar book.
We tend to think of grammar books as if they were absolute codes containing all the rules, even though they only contain representative rules.
Because we have been constantly learning have+pp ~ for+period noun, we cannot help but feel uncomfortable when we see a sentence like “I was sick for two weeks.”
So, we conclude that this sentence is incorrect and ungrammatical.
But what is the characteristic of the present perfect tense? It is a tense that straddles both sides, extending from the past to the present.
I have been sick for two weeks means that I have been sick for two weeks now.
And I was sick for two weeks, which is not in the grammar book, means that you have been sick for the past two weeks, although you do not know whether you are sick now or not.
In other words, it is not a wrong sentence, just that the meaning is slightly different.

Language is not a caged bird.

Let me talk about the limitations of grammar books that fail to reflect the evolution of a second language.
Even in the case of Korean, writing "Eopsipnida" (there is no) used to seem ignorant, but what about now? To ensure that it's pronounced as it is, the official spelling of "Eopsipnida" (there is no) will be changed to "Eopsipnida" (there is no).
This is the evolution of language.
Language is not a bird in a cage.
It is not a discipline that is studied by putting it in a test tube in a laboratory.
It is the living creature we are writing about here right now.
If you were to look at the sentence "All we can do is study harder for our next exam" in TOEIC, which deals with sentences of a daily and business nature, and ask what is wrong, everyone would unanimously say "~is study~."
Because the infinitive cannot be the complement of the verb be, it would be argued that it should be changed to ~is to study~.
This is an inevitable phenomenon that occurs when relying on grammar books that cannot always keep up with the evolution of language.
However, this part is so generalized that it is mentioned in some grammar books.
The use of each other and one another indiscriminately, and the use of the negation of the infinitive as not to+V or to not+V are also clear examples.
One more thing, if you insist that I have gone to New York should be written as I have been to New York, then you are still bound by the shackles of old grammar books.

We need to learn real English beyond the limitations of grammar…

This book, "English Conversation! Speaking Skills 221," aims to overcome the limitations of grammar books, which often fail to address such unmentioned and linguistic changes. It includes so-called ungrammatical concepts directly applied in real-life situations, as well as nuanced differences that may have previously been overlooked.
Rather than simply understanding the 221 included contents, I hope you will use them to understand the nature of language, and by empathizing with how we use our language today, keep in mind that English is not an academic discipline, but a constantly changing skill.
