Many will likely respond, "80% of Korean history textbooks are fiction? That's ridiculous, considering the credibility of the state and schools."
However, after researching this field for 17 years, the sense of betrayal and despair I feel at the thought, "Have I been deceived this much?" is indescribable.
Because there are more lies in Korean history textbooks than that.
It's hard to find a country as extremely divided as Korea, or one so obsessed with its past. The reason for this is the politically motivated indoctrination of false national history, and anyone who is indoctrinated with false memories cannot be considered normal.
Let's take an example.
History textbooks thoroughly hide the fact that Joseon was a country strewn with corpses of people who starved to death.
Textbooks deceive us about the reality of North Korea, the poorest country on earth, which looked up to it as a "country of starvation" where tens to hundreds of thousands of people starved to death every year until the end of the Joseon Dynasty, totaling 60 million people.
Joseon was the only country in the world that had a slave system where people enslaved their own people for generations, and it was a country where people starved endlessly because the ruling class took all the money they earned.
But the fact of how we escaped that suffering is hidden in our national history education.
Even after the Eulsa Treaty, when one million Joseon people saw the horrors of starvation and slavery disappear, they banded together and, through the anti-feudal Japan-Korea Annexation Movement, overturned the very basic historical narrative of subduing the feudal ruling class, and now teach only the false history of a brilliant country being occupied, exploited, and massacred.

Hundreds of thousands of Koreans committed all kinds of evil deeds on the continent, claiming they were advancing there.
Yet, Korean history textbooks portray Korea as a suffering saint, even pretending to be a victim, as if Korea fought against Japan on the side of the United States and the Allied Powers.
They also thoroughly lied to the public about the fact that there were over 800,000 Korean volunteers for the Japanese army and that the Provisional Government's Liberation Army had fewer than 339 members.
The competition rate for Koreans to enlist in the Japanese military was over 30:1 on average, and it even reached 62:1, so some people committed suicide after failing to enlist in the Japanese military, and almost the entire nation was enthusiastic about the invasion of the continent, and if I told you that there were 148 Korean war criminals in the Pacific War, most people would not believe me.
Because they are brainwashed with only fake national history, the people have become 'blind citizens with amnesia' who do not even know whether they are victims or invaders.
The moment people believe that Korean history textbooks and media are facts, they become fools.
Who is worse: the aggressor who apologizes or the accomplice in the aggression who pretends to be the victim?
Let's just know one thing and move on.
According to declassified documents from the former Soviet Union, Kim Il-sung was a Soviet Army captain who passed the interview and written exam in front of Stalin, beating Pak Hon-yong. If the North Korean people had known this, would they have regarded Kim Song-ju (Kim Il-sung) as their leader? If the people come to think, “Why is a Soviet Army captain our leader?” then power cannot last long, and since tens of thousands of people have already been killed for power, power must never be relinquished.
Therefore, in order to maintain power, one must become a 'hero', and the means to do so is through the manipulation of history.
Since history is written as the victors please, in an independent country, the independence fighters are the heroes, in a merged country, the merger fighters are the heroes, and the loser is always the villain. The hero must be a 'savior', and in order to make the winners into saviors, the losers are always educated as villains.
Before he showed up, we had to instill in them that it was a terrible hell, and that our people were living in a dark age of nightmares, being devoured by hungry wolves because of that villain.
However, as I will explain later, the Japanese colonial period was a time of much greater freedom and prosperity than North Korea today.
It may be hard for Koreans, who have only been educated about the terrible exploitation they suffered during the Japanese colonial period, to believe, but the forces that liberated Korea from the terrible starvation and slavery were Japan and its pro-Japanese collaborators, and the amount of money Japan invested to solve Korea's starvation was astronomical.

If North Koreans realize that North Korea is a country far more impoverished and subject to far more horrific human rights abuses than during the Japanese colonial era, will the Kim dynasty be able to endure? If North Koreans believe that independence was a waste of time, will power be able to endure?
