Smart Parent Communication
Smart Parent Communication
Description
Book Introduction
Empathy and comfort for teachers struggling with their relationships with parents.
Practical know-how for wise communication that connects hearts and minds!

Just as children are precious to parents, the children they form relationships with in the space called 'our class' are invaluable to teachers.
Parents and teachers alike want their children to grow up well.
Therefore, cooperation between educational institutions and families, rather than the efforts of either teachers or parents alone, is more important than anything else.
However, because each parent has different expectations and educational goals for teachers, and each parent has a different way of expressing themselves, conflicts and difficulties may arise during the communication process.
When these situations and emotions intertwine, there are times when complex emotions such as 'a feeling of communication breakdown', 'a feeling of inexplicable frustration and resentment', and 'a desire to find a way to communicate' do not take an even one step forward ahead of reason.

This book is about communication with parents, one of the most difficult practical challenges faced by teachers of young children.
It is a very unfortunate reality that not only are there few opportunities to learn at university, but many teachers become wounded and exhausted after joining the company due to the large temperature difference between theory and reality.
Drawing on their extensive practical experience in the educational field, the authors of this book offer empathy and comfort to teachers who grow alongside children, while also offering concrete solutions for communicating with parents.

Solving Kindergarten Parents' Concerns Wisely

He's a picky eater. He came home from kindergarten with bruises. He keeps wet-wetting himself.
Writes with his left hand, bites his fingernails, and touches his genitals.
Avoid eye contact when talking. The child says bad things.
They don't listen to others and only talk to themselves. Their pronunciation isn't as accurate as that of their peers.
I hate reading books. I talk nonstop. I think I speak too slowly.
Cries because he doesn't want to go to kindergarten. He blindly imitates his friends' behavior.
They insist on their own style. They are reluctant to approach friends. They are very picky.
I'm so shy. I only hang out with friends of the same sex.
He doesn't listen well and is stubborn. He says his friends hate him and hit him.

Coming out

Into the book
Parents need to keep in mind that they are currently in a time when anxieties, worries, hopes, and expectations can shift several times a day.
In these situations, rather than giving a direct message like, “You don’t have to be anxious,” it’s better to say, “I think you’re doing well in the current situation.”
A message of support and encouragement as a companion, such as “I’m rooting for you,” is much more effective.
And for these encouraging messages to be effective, they must be genuine.
If teachers truly empathize with and encourage parents' situations and efforts, a strong bond of trust will be formed between teachers and parents, and only then will the message of encouragement truly reach the parents.
--- From "Kindergarten Teachers and Parents"

Everyone has a desire to protect themselves.
In the relationship between teachers and parents, the fact that negative memories from past experiences come to mind first and are not easily forgotten can be considered a psychological defense mechanism that is functioning well to protect oneself.
Therefore, if you feel worried and anxious in advance during parent-teacher conference week or other parent-complaint situations, you can assume that your mind has already unconsciously prepared to respond and that it is now time to take action.
When anxiety and worry arise, the more you prepare in advance for the problem situation, the more calming it will be.
It is also effective to think about anticipated problems in advance and find related materials through parent-teacher conference application forms or preliminary research.
--- From "Let's grow together through communication"

Occasionally, teachers may ask parents about their home situation or intervene and provide advice on parenting, as they believe that help may be needed at home.
It's best to avoid offering parenting advice before parents even ask, "What should I do?"
Regardless of whether the advice is right or wrong, in situations where trust is not strong, unwanted advice or counsel can damage the relationship between the two people.
If there is an area where you need help at home to guide your child, you should make a specific request through a behavior description.
--- From "Become a communication expert through parent-teacher counseling"

Even if parents suddenly start complaining, it is necessary to listen carefully to understand what they are trying to say, and in situations where the child is feeling anxious or stressed, it is necessary to take a moment to catch their breath before responding.
This is a proactive behavioral strategy that can be attempted not only in relationships with parents, but also in all human relationships.
When you feel uncomfortable emotions like worry, anxiety, or fear, stop for a moment and listen actively and speak up.

Publisher's Review
Everything You Need to Know About Parent Communication for Early Childhood Teachers

This book is largely divided into four chapters.

Chapter 1 first examines the early childhood education field, and then reflects on 'myself as a teacher' to establish my identity as a teacher and a healthy self within it.
Chapter 2 examines external and internal factors that hinder communication between parents and teachers, and explores ways to facilitate smoother communication depending on the type of parent.
Chapter 3 specifically examines the types and processes of parent counseling conducted at early childhood education institutions, what to prepare for counseling, and what to consider when conducting counseling.
Chapter 4 asks and answers questions in a Q&A format about things that teachers have difficulty guiding children with and things that parents are often curious about and ask questions about, and seeks solutions.
Remembering that teachers and parents are collaborators and partners, and the process of courageously and proactively implementing the guidance in this book and internalizing it as their own will further enhance teachers' experience and communication skills.
