From Shincheonji to the Unification Church
Description
Book Introduction
"This book is like a 'vaccine against pseudo-religion and heresy,' revealing the precise history and damage caused by heresy without reservation."
The criteria for groups classified as pseudo-religious and heretical are based on officially recognized data from the status of pseudo-religious and heretical groups by Korean religious denomination.
In February and March 2020, when COVID-19 was rampant in Korea, it started with the so-called "Shincheonji-origin first pandemic", which resulted in 5,214 cases at the Shincheonji Church of Jesus in Daegu.
Including Shincheonji, which has been designated as an “anti-social organization that violates religious freedom,” pseudo-religions and cults have been unknowingly exerting a negative influence on our society.
This book is written by four experts, including Professor Heo Ho-ik, author of “Korean Heretical Christianity,” as well as professors of theology, psychology, and lawyers, who criticize from various perspectives the “core doctrines” advocated by “pseudo-religious and heretical groups” that encourage and justify unethical and anti-social behavior.
The COVID-19 pandemic will eventually end, but countless "pseudo-religious and heretical groups" will not disappear and will continue to proliferate in various forms, becoming a cancerous presence in our society.
This book is like a vaccine to overcome and prevent it.
This book explains the social and psychological reasons for falling into cults and heresies, and explains what legal problems arise after falling into them, what specific social dysfunctions they cause, and how these groups are formed. It then synthesizes this to inform us of how we, as individuals, as well as organizations such as the church, society, and the nation, should respond.

Appendix: Status of Regulations on Pseudo-religious and Heretical Organizations by Denomination
Into the book
Most cults isolate their followers from their primary bonds of family and friends.
And he makes them subordinate to the religious group of which he is the leader.
People belonging to the same church are allowed to live together in a dormitory, and even go so far as to form a village and have the entire family live together.
Elder Park Dae-seon's evangelistic center created a so-called 'Faith Village', a group residence, and encouraged believers to live there.
It involves economic activities such as manufacturing products by mobilizing cheap labor.
Shin Ok-ju used sweet talk to deceive her followers into mass migration to Fiji.
Only then can they be tied to their organization.
By joining a pseudo-religious group, you have effectively lost your base to return to.
Although they realize they've fallen into a cult, having already strayed from their families and friends, they can't bring themselves to return, and so they remain in the organization.
--- Chapter 1 _ [III.
Why can't I escape a cult?
Even when a case of violation of the real-name system occurs, the actual damage suffered by the victims is often not visible.
However, if you are deceived into joining a group by thinking it is another group because the group's real name is not disclosed, and only find out later, the damage caused by this deceptive act can be diverse, including mental damage and material damage such as time, labor, and donations provided in the process of dedicating oneself to the group.
On the other hand, even if you initially joined a group without knowing it was a cult, you later discovered it was a pseudo-religious group. Even if you didn't know the name of the group, you became a member by your own decision to make that religion your object of faith. Therefore, it's questionable whether any harm can be attributed to violating the real-name system.
And these claims become a typical excuse for pseudo-religious and heretical groups.
--- Chapter 2 _ [IV.
[The Legal Uniqueness of Pseudo-religious and Heretical Groups Different from General Religion]
Shincheonji repeatedly uses “silencing education” by presenting various Bible verses and telling people to “keep the Bible study in secret” from family and outsiders at its gospel rooms or seminaries.
And they brainwash us into thinking that because “your own household is your enemy” (Matthew 10:34-36), studying the Bible must be kept a secret from your family, church members, and pastor.
They twist the Bible to give a plausible reason why one should not reveal to others until they have found “treasure hidden in a field” (Matthew 13:44) and possess it.
Bible study materials are not leaked out either.
In order to maintain security and protect personal safety, some groups or locations were disguised, and leaders were caught using fake names to conduct undercover missionary work.
Shincheonji claims that just as the military uses codes to keep secrets from the enemy, the Bible also contains secrets that God wants to keep from Satan.
And to hide this secret, we use a code, which is a crude logic called metaphor.
--- Chapter 3 _ [VIII.
Shincheonji's Lee Man-hee's "Conspiracy Doctrine" and the COVID-19 Mass Spread
Patient No. 31 confused quarantine authorities by concealing his movements, and Shincheonji officials in the Daegu area became a major conduit for the spread of COVID-19 by refusing to submit or intentionally reducing the list of Shincheonji believers who attended the gathering and those belonging to the Daegu branch.
At the press conference titled “Shincheonji’s Religious Fraudulent Acts and the Government’s Countermeasures” held on the 4th floor of the Korean Church Centennial Memorial Hall on November 20, 2019, Pastor Shin Hyun-wook analyzed the trends and reality of Shincheonji, focusing on the fact that the rate of Shincheonji’s proselytization to non-believers is increasing, that they are focusing on overseas proselytization, that their proselytization methods are becoming more sophisticated and diverse, and that they are expanding their proselytization by establishing disguised churches.
In any case, it's fortunate that the global disaster of COVID-19 has raised awareness and heightened awareness among Korean churches and civil society of the problems caused by cults like Shincheonji.
