Description
Book Introduction
The story of Bbaengdeok's pure love for Simcheong touches our hearts!
Winner of the Excellence Award at the Korea Story Contest!

In the story of Simcheong, which every Korean knows, there is a character that no one pays attention to or even mentions properly.
It is 'Bbaengdeok'.
《Bbaengdeok's Love》 is a story that unfolds from the perspective of Bbaengdeok, the son of Bbaengdeok's mother.
This is a story that tells in detail how Simcheong threw herself into the Indangsu River, how she met her father Sim Bongsa again and regained her sight, and how this story was passed down orally and became “Simcheongga.”
To do that, the author begins with the story before the meeting between the mother of the raccoon and the son of the raccoon.
How did Bbaengdeok and his mother come to the village where Sim Hak-gyu lived, and how did Bbaengdeok and Cheong-i meet each other? That's right.
《The Love of a Bbaengdeok》 can be said to be a prequel to 《Simcheongjeon》 in today's terms.

Author Jeong Hae-wang has been active in the children's and young adult literature world for a long time, and is considered a storyteller who tells Korean stories in an interesting way.
His works, which are included in elementary and middle school textbooks, capture the unique Korean sentiment.
He succeeds in solving the final puzzle of “Simcheongjeon” through “Bbaengdeok’s Love.”
The idea of 'Bbaengdeok, who suddenly becomes siblings with the woman he loves, Simcheong' is groundbreaking, and the flowing sentences that combine the style of pansori and classical literature are delicious.
《Bbaengdeok's Love》 was recognized for its captivating story and excellent completion, winning an Excellence Award at the Korea Story Contest, a rare feat for a youth novel.

Into the book
I didn't really like the name 'Bbaengdeok'.
That was the name that Palbok, the 'neighborhood idiot' who lived right next door to Yakjeonhyeon's maternal home, used to call Byeongdeok.
When Byung-deok stayed at his maternal grandparents' house, he would come to visit every other day and sing "Bbaengdeok-ah, Bbaengdeok-ah," so his mother must have been familiar with his name.
But now is not the time to judge whether a name is good or bad.

Bbaengdeok slowly raised his head and looked into the face of the girl standing in front of him.

'iced coffee!'

It was breathtaking.
It was the first time in the world I had seen such clear eyes.
It was the kind of eye you would find on the face of a heavenly fairy descending to earth.
At that moment, something flashed through Bbaengdeok's head.

"You are Cheong! A child born with the sad fate of becoming the blind father's eye."

“What are you staring at so intently?”

Cheong-i asked with her eyes wide open.
The embarrassed Bbaengdeok turned his face away and pretended to look across the river.

Finally, Cheong-i took a couple of steps forward, then threw herself into the hazy sky like a white bird.
The sailors who had been gathered at the bow, including the bear and the weasel, all fell face down on the deck.
There was no way to know whether it was a bow to the Dragon King or a greeting to comfort Cheong-i.

While everyone's eyes were focused on the bow, another bird flew from the stern.
He had a long plank hanging from his side.
But no one noticed it because of the thick fog and the sound of the waves.
They simply went their separate ways, relieved that they had successfully completed the once-in-a-decade event of the Nanjing merchants.

“You are a man of few words.
“Since I introduced myself first, shouldn’t you tell me your name as well?”

“Oh, what’s my name?”

"okay.
“Where did you live?”

After a moment of silence, Bbaengdeok answered like this.

“My name is Sim Deok, and I used to live in Hwangju.
My sister is Cheong.
“They are both foreign.”

It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, but I thought it would be better to change my own surname rather than arbitrarily changing Cheong-i's surname.
After all, the name Bbaengdeok is fake.

However, even after acquiring enormous wealth and power, Shim Dae-in did not seek out his mother's whereabouts.
Long ago, on the way back to Dengzhou after leaving Pyongyang and facing several near-death experiences, I made a promise over and over again.
I don't have a mother anymore.
There is no such shameless mother as the one who ruined Sim Bong-sa's house and even cut off his relationship with Cheong-i.

And I really believed I had forgotten everything.
Her mother, Cheong-i, and all the bad relationships she had in Joseon that had only brought her sorrow and pain.

Publisher's Review
Simcheongjeon, rewritten from the perspective of an omniscient nerd.

《Tears of a Bbaengdeok》 is a purely creative novel.
When his father and older brother were implicated in a treason plot, Jo Byeong-deok hid his identity and ran away from his mother, pretending to be a mute and deaf.
It depicts the story of how he meets Simcheong, who lives in the same neighborhood, and through many twists and turns, becomes a wealthy merchant in the Qing Dynasty.
The success of a bright young man who harbors a lump in his heart and the passionate love he gives his life for Simcheong are touching in themselves.
Moreover, the dynamic life of Byeong-deok and the plot of Simcheongjeon are closely intertwined, making it even more immersive.

Jo Byeong-deok, the son of a single mother, Bbaeng-deok, the mute, and Sim Deok, Cheong-i's older brother.
Byung-deok, who changes his identity and name at every turning point in his life, never gives up on life and moves forward.
Even in a situation where he has to hide his existence for his entire life, it is as sad, sorrowful, and dynamic as “Simcheongjeon” in that he does his best for the woman he loves.

A heart-fluttering, heart-fluttering love story

Bbaengdeok, who pretends to be mute, is bullied by the neighborhood kids.
Cheong, who felt sorry for him, helps Bbaengdeok, and Bbaengdeok falls in love with Cheong.
Then one day, upon hearing the news that Cheong-i was being sold to the Qing Dynasty, he secretly hid on a ship and threw himself into the sea to save Cheong-i, who had been sacrificed to the Indangsu.

Shim Cheong and Bbaengdeok, who narrowly escaped death, live in a foreign land, China, with the help of merchants from Joseon.
To hide their past, they disguise themselves as siblings, Sim Deok and Sim Cheong, but their love grows stronger day by day.

Then one day, he hears news of his parents through a ship that has returned from Joseon: that Bongsa Sim and Deok-i's mother have gotten married.
Although it was unbelievable news, Deok-i believes that her mother approached Sim Bong-sa out of revenge for losing her child.
And the two of them are truly amazed at the fact that they have become real siblings.

As time passes, Deok-i and Cheong-i return to Joseon and try their best to find their parents.
However, without finding her, Deok-i ends up marrying Cheong-i off as her older brother.
Deok-i, full of wounds, returns to Qing, works day and night to become a merchant, and then returns to Joseon.

As time passes, Sim Deok tells her story in an adapted form to an old man who sang “Chunhyangga” at her 60th birthday party.
In the story, Simcheong returns alive after falling into the Indangsu River, becomes empress, holds a banquet inviting servants from all over the country, and meets her father, who regains his sight.
This is the Chunhyangga we know.

A story that explores the origins of sound, a bold new perspective on classics.

'Classics' are often considered predictable and boring stories.
However, with the Korean Wave, the potential of content based on Korean culture has been highlighted, and recently, works that reinterpret classics have been steadily produced.
However, 'classics' are still a difficult field for teenagers to enjoy.
In particular, as the importance of classics in the middle and high school curriculum increased, classics became subjects to be studied and included in textbooks.
《The Love of a Bbaengdeok》 provides such readers with an opportunity to look at the classics in a new way.

Taking advantage of the gap in the story of Simcheong where Bbaengdeok does not appear, Bbaengdeok was given new life, and the evil mother Bbaengdeok was given the image of a strong mother trying to protect her son.
The lament of wanting someone to lean on reminds us that Simcheong was not a filial daughter sent from heaven, but a fifteen-year-old girl.

《The Love of a Bbaengdeok》 offers a fresh interpretation of characters we know, dramatically utilizing aspects we hadn't yet discovered, and vividly revives characters who had been stuffed into classics.
This bold twist on the classics, which gives a fresh perspective on everything we take for granted, is enough to allow young readers to fully enjoy the charm of the classics.
