The Chelsea Hotel at the end of every alley
At the end of every alley, the Chelsea Hotel
Description
Book Introduction
“Just wear a Seoul National University hoodie.”
With this one motto, I postponed everything until after entering college.
That was the first love I felt, the first best friend I ever had.

What should I do when I find out that my best friend is dating my crush?

LP Bar 'Chelsea Hotel' located in a back alley in Jongno.
Unlike the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan, which was once a hideout for aspiring artists, this place, whose signboard is crumbling, is different from the priorities of the outside world, such as academic background or job, and where the most important thing is what kind of music is played, and where there are people who will hug anyone who cries.
A bottle stacking artist, a writer without a debut work, a person who cherishes a past love, an unknown actor… … .

Rock-young, who grew up in this place run by his parents, who were band vocalists and guitarists, with rock and metal as his lullaby and the regulars' refrain, "When Rock-young was young," as his theme song, prioritized grades and postponed everything until after he entered college, aiming for a life grounded in reality, not a place like the Chelsea Hotel, a "job with 4 major insurances," and not a dreamy life like the Chelsea Hotel guests.
But that night, after encountering Jiyu at the study cafe, Rak-young's life, which had been moving forward steadily, goes off track.

『At the End of Every Alley, Chelsea Hotel』 is a new young adult novel by author Jo Woo-ri, who won the Biryongso Blue Fiction Award for her young adult novel 『I Don't Want to Be Twenty Anyway』, the Grand Prize at the Four Seasons Literature Award for her young adult novel 『Oh, Love』, and the Grand Prize at the Changbi 'Good Children's Book' Manuscript Contest for her full-length children's book 『4x4 World』.
The bitterness of love that inflates like a balloon and then plummets, dreams and anxieties about the future, faith and forgiveness toward people, music and places that offer comfort… The author delivers his message with a sense of speed, filling the story with nothing to spare.

Author's Note

Into the book
If my heart, this maddening jealousy, hatred, and love, will all end someday, then why do we love?
It's going to go down anyway.
It's going to end anyway.

“But in the meantime, we fly in the sky.”
--- p.162

“So we have to be kind to each other.
In this universe, we are all alone and only together for a short time when we pass through a crossing point.
“Because after that short time, I have to go on a long journey alone again.”
--- p.169

“Rakyoung, the person who invented Pringles asked that when he died, he be cremated and put in a Pringles can.
(…) I want to find something like that too.
Something I want to take with me even after I die.
“Something I’m proud of and love for the rest of my life.”
No matter how long it takes, Jiyu will find out.
Your own Pringles can.
--- p.181

When God doesn't look at us, that's when we have to sing.
--- p.193

“Apple said so.
It takes courage to walk at your own pace until the end even though everyone else is running.
At work, I always felt like I was falling behind.
(…) I feel like I was running like crazy in the direction everyone else was running in without even knowing where I wanted to go.
There will come a day when you want to run.
At that time, you have to run as fast as you can.
“I believe that such a moment will come for both you and me.”
--- p.190

At the end of every narrow, long, steep, and winding road in the world, there it is.
So, it doesn't matter which path you take.
Eventually, you will arrive safely at the Chelsea Hotel.
Through the warm yellow light, dark shadows of loosely connected people are visible.
What was significant about the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan in the 1960s wasn't that its guests were famous artists.
The important thing is that they were together.
--- p.205

Publisher's Review
The awkwardness of our hearts, the summer time we spent together, the excitement and hurt of that day filled with the dizzying scent of vanilla.

At the Chelsea Hotel, where people who have been damaged or lost something cross paths.
Those nights were engraved like a comfort to me, who was suffering from uncontrollable emotions.

And through all that time, I meet a new ‘me’.

“You know, how many special nights does a person remember in their lifetime?
So, from today on, let’s be besties.”

After that night, which felt like a scene from a youth comic, Ji-yu actively closes the distance between herself and Rak-young.
Is this what it means to "become friends"? Just as we're about to get used to this bewildering relationship, an incident unfolds that turns the classroom upside down.
A serial insect terror attack targeting Jiyu, and a note with the title 'Sapilguijeong' left at the crime scene.
Before he could come to his senses after this incident, another person suddenly entered Rak-young's life.
Yeonyoung and her aspiring student Kim Doyoung.
And then the child's sudden suggestion, "Let's catch the bug culprit." The trio of high school detectives who were formed in such a sudden manner spend their summer together both inside and outside of school.

“Crisis doesn’t come at just the right time.
“I believe that you have to wander enough to be able to read the road.”

Who is the "fisherman" who perpetrates serial terror attacks? What secret is Ji-yu hiding? How can we explain this strange sensation that makes my nerves race and tingle whenever I see Kim Do-young? What can I do with this abyss of emotions that stretches endlessly toward Ji-yu? And on top of that, there's her mom and dad, who were arguing over the Chelsea Hotel...
Rather than finding an answer to who the culprit is, Rak-young gets lost in the maze, unable to figure out his own problem, and eventually runs away.
What awaits at the end of this escape?

“Everything has a takeoff and a landing.
“I failed, but I hope you land well.”

“Jung Ji-yu, you and I are all working hard to live our lives with our own circumstances that no one knows about.

“Not just the three of us, but everyone.”

These people, each with their own circumstances, these people with diverse life directions that no one can say are wrong, these people who, on their way to where they want to go, stop for a moment in the small space called Chelsea Hotel, find solace in music, lend their ears to each other's stories, and then return to their respective places. At the Chelsea Hotel, where they intersect, Rak-young, who had been feeling lost, anxious, and confused, encounters moments that feel like blessings.

Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" flowed through the speakers.

The Chelsea Hotel was the first to be proud.

I'm glad that the place where Kim Do-young and I met was the Chelsea Hotel, not someplace else in this vast world.
And wherever "Wish You Were Here" comes on, I'll think of Kim Do-young._From the text

And finally, after all this time, Rock Young opens the door to the Chelsea Hotel and comes out.

“The past month has been a time when I was able to figure out what kind of person I am.
Now it's time to think about what kind of person I want to be.”

“I wanted to portray how the moment you cross paths with someone, your life’s trajectory changes unexpectedly.”
Author Jo Woo-ri's new young adult novel, "At the End of Every Alley, the Chelsea Hotel"

A narrative that sucks the reader in, characters whose imperfections are so understandable, a psychology that resonates with you as if it were your own story, sentences that you want to read over and over again… … 『At the End of Every Alley, Chelsea Hotel』 is a new youth novel by author Jo Woo-ri, who won the Biryongso Blue Fiction Award for her youth novel 『I Don’t Want to Be Twenty Anyway』, the Grand Prize at the Four Seasons Literature Award for 『Oh, Love』, and the Grand Prize at the Changbi ‘Good Children’s Book’ Manuscript Contest for her full-length children’s book 『4x4 World』.
The bitterness of love that inflates like a balloon and then plummets, dreams and anxieties about the future, faith and forgiveness toward people, music and places that offer comfort… The author delivers his message with a sense of speed, filling the story with nothing to spare.

I am grateful for the places that hid me during my confusing times.
Places where 'I' and 'myself' were together.
For some, it could be a corner of the playground, for others, the seat next to them, or a cafe with large windows.
I hope everyone can find their own 'Chelsea Hotel'. _Jo Woo-ri
