Vegan Girl Jinchorok
Description
Book Introduction
“From now on, what I eat is
I will choose.
“Meat or grass!”
A refreshing school life and a delicious palace romance unfold.

Author Kang Ira has returned with the youth novel, ‘Vegan Girl Jinchorok.’
This work, which rarely features 'vegetarianism' in Korean youth novels, is said to have been written with the author's hope that young people would experience vegetarianism at least once a week.

The novel unfolds in an interesting way with two intersecting stories, one set in a South Korean high school in 2025 and the other in a Joseon Dynasty palace.
In modern times, the story unfolds between the protagonist Jin Cho-rok, who has become an involuntary vegetarian (vegan) due to health issues, and his classmate Origin, who is also a vegetarian and writes web novels.
In the historical fantasy web novel being written by Origin, the court lady Song Si-nae, who has a painful story of losing her family to treason, and Prince Hui, who is tormented by threats surrounding the succession to the throne, appear, adding to the immersion.

Set in an exciting world of food, the novel travels back and forth between present and past, seamlessly conveying the values of vegetarianism to young people while delicately depicting their journeys of growth, including relationships with friends, conflict resolution, and the search for their true identities.
In the preface to the book, the author says:

“I hope that through this novel, young people will understand the meaning of vegetarianism and have the opportunity to think deeply about their own choices.”

Into the book
“Only meat? Because of Jin Ah-reum, I can’t even eat snacks, and because of Jin Ah-reum, I can’t even eat ice cream.
“I don’t feel sick, so I can eat anything, but I can’t eat anything because of Jin Ah-reum’s atopic dermatitis.”
--- p.14

Lee Jin put down the board marker and combed her long hair with a familiar motion, then tied it up into a ponytail.
The fluff on the nape of his neck glistened in the morning sunlight.
The pleasant shampoo scent spread gently.
It was like a scene from a romance novel.
--- p.17

Nokdu and Lady Kim's gaze turned to Nae-sae.
Finally, as if he had made up his mind, he raised his head and met Hwi's eyes.
And said.
“I am vegan.
“I don’t eat meat.”
--- p.25

Minji, a classmate standing right behind me, raised her voice and slapped the green light.
Chorok and Minji were huge fans of BTS, especially Jungkook.
As Minji hummed Jungkook's song 'SEVEN' while tapping her toes, the ARMYs in line sang along and raised their voices.

--- p.32

“Both the Chinese characters for rain and geon contain the character for person (人).
If we look into the origin of the letters, the character for 'gab-eul' means a person with a barrel of arrows, and the character for 'sturdy' means a person who has built a good road.
It means to be well-equipped and upright as a person.
“Humanity refers to both the physical and mental qualities.”
--- p.40

A rain of pink flowers fell over the pond of sponsorship.
The wind blew and the cherry blossom petals flew into the pavilion.
Hwi and Si-nae sat facing each other across a small tray with green tea, three-colored tea, dried persimmons stuffed with walnuts, and yakgwa between them.
The sight of Nokdu sweeping away the petals falling on Hwi's head and shoulders looked like he was dancing.
--- p.75

Lee Jin, who came to the green house on Saturday afternoon, learned the recipe for the Mala Tofu Burger and the secret sauce from her mother, and then made it herself and even received a signature of acceptance.
The Mala Tofu Burger was a simple dish made by pouring Mala sauce on firm-fried tofu, simmering it until it was lightly seasoned, and then placing lettuce between sliced morning buns, along with green peppers and grilled onions.
--- p.89

“Putting poison in the braised ribs was also the work of Prince Yeon.
Since Mama is safe and unresponsive, this time he uses the opposite trick.
“They’re trying to frame us as the ones who tried to poison Prince Yeon.”
--- p.114

The top tier contained bite-sized bean cutlets topped with rice and homemade sauce, while the bottom tier contained fruit skewers made by alternating strawberries, Shine Muscat, and apples.
Bean cutlets are a delight to play at Downey's house.
It was a dish that A-reum's mother often made for her when she went out.

Publisher's Review
No meat! Yes romance!
Jin Cho-rok, an involuntary vegetarian high school student
The story of Song Si-nae, a poet from the Joseon Dynasty
A story of special friendship and love

“If it is the best way to become healthy while protecting the environment and saving the Earth,
“I will become a true vegan by my own choice and will.”

This work is a rare work in the field of domestic youth novels that deals with the theme of 'vegetarianism'.
The author said he wrote this novel with the hope that young people would experience vegetarianism for one meal a week.

The story progresses along two intersecting tracks.
The first track is the real-life story of Jin Cho-rok, a vegan girl in her first year of high school.
The second track is the web novel "Vegan Kiminae Song Si-nae," a historical fantasy romance about Song Si-nae and Prince Hui, who appear as the main characters in the novel.
Both the main characters, Green and City, are set to be 17 years old, and they experience various conflicts and growth through the theme of 'vegan' in their respective worlds.

Choices about 'what to eat'

Jincho-rok lives as an involuntary vegan.
When her older sister Jin-A-Reum became a vegetarian due to her atopic dermatitis and allergies, Cho-Rok became a vegan against her will.
Because of this, Cho-rok refuses the vegetarian lunch box his mother makes for him and continues his daily routine of secretly eating school lunch with his allowance.
Then, when she meets the long-haired boy, Lee Jin, Cho-rok begins to seriously consider her dietary choices and vegetarianism.
Lee Jin continues to actively advocate for vegetarianism, the environment, and the community, running a picket campaign called “Meatless Mondays.”
Through him, Green also declares that he will become a voluntary vegetarian of his own free will.

The novel goes beyond simply addressing vegetarianism, but also raises questions about what constitutes a healthy, proper, and sustainable diet.
Through this, we aim to convey various topics such as animal welfare, ecosystem protection, and community life to young readers and expand their interests and thoughts.

Jin A-reum, Jin Cho-rok's older sister, had an experience in the past where she was taken to the emergency room due to shock after making and eating tteokbokki with her friends.
This incident sparks conflict between Green and his friends, and they begin to suspect each other.
Arum hopes that the three of them can become close again like before, but the process is not easy.

Origin is a classmate of Green, and is writing the web novel "Vegan Kiminae Song Si-nae."
This web novel is a fantasy set in the Joseon Dynasty, and contains the romance between Song Si-nae, a vegetarian, and Prince Hwi.
Cho-rok is a huge fan of Origin's web novels, but he can't say it honestly.

My friend is a web novel writer named Doturak Daenggi.

Origin runs for student vice president at the suggestion of his senior.
However, his promise to provide vegetarian meals once a week met with strong resistance from students.
The vegan cookies distributed at the candidate's rally become a problem for the fair election, and Lee Jin ends up giving up the election and is absent the next day.
At school, Lee Jin also has a hard time due to misunderstandings and exclusive friends caused by her long hair.
Actually, there was a special reason why Lee Jin grew her hair out.
It's because of my connection with Dahun, whom I met at the Taekwondo gym.
Dahun is Daun's younger brother. He is battling leukemia and has lost his hair due to the side effects of the chemotherapy, so he wears a beanie.

Chorok, who is upset by the fact that the author of the web novel "Vegan Kiminae Song Si-nae" is Origin, goes to find Lee Jin.
Lee Jin confesses her feelings to Chorok along with an apology, but Chorok's feelings are not easily resolved.
At the suggestion of Yoon-soo, who has become the student body president, 'Meatless Monday' is put to a student vote, and a pilot meal is finally implemented...

The whole world is connected

Meanwhile, in the web novel, the story of Kimina Sinae, who becomes a court lady to restore her family's honor, unfolds.
The grandfather in the city was asked to make the young prince crown prince, but was unjustly killed on charges of treason.
Si-na, who has a painful past where her family was ruined due to a false accusation, is once again caught up in the poisoning of Prince Hui and finds herself in trouble.
However, the wise city reveals the grandfather's innocence and the family's grievances by revealing the former king's letter.
In the forbidden spirit, Hwi and Si-nae confirm their feelings for each other and fall in love.

Both Chorok, a high school student in South Korea living in the present, and Sin-i, who lives in the Joseon Dynasty, have happy endings.
This work provides young people with a new perspective on vegetarianism and delivers a message that can have a positive impact on their lives.
As mentioned in the 'Author's Note', vegetarianism is not just a simple dietary choice, but an important choice that connects me with the world.
Author's Note

I am a vegetarian.
Avoid all meat and meat products, including poultry, but allow fish and seafood occasionally.
There are exceptions where, if an adult offers food with good intentions or shares it out of joy, even if it is meat, we gratefully accept a bite or two.

The reason I became a vegetarian was yoga.
I have been practicing yoga and working as a teacher for over ten years.
There are many vegetarians who practice yoga.
It is because of the ‘practice of nonviolence.’

In the Yoga Sutras written by Patanjali, the founder of the yoga school, the yoga practice process for purifying the body and mind is explained in eight stages.
The first step is 'Yama', which signifies social taboos and moral rules.
Non-violence is one of the precepts of Yama, and is a state of mind and attitude that aims to live a life of compassion and mercy, without harming other living beings and in harmony with nature.

When I worked as a free semester instructor at a middle school, I would carefully look at the school lunch menu posted on the blackboard.
It was a school that didn't have a 'Meatless Monday' diet.
When I asked the children for their opinions, they surprisingly showed interest and favor towards vegetarianism.
This novel started with the simple thought that it would be good for young people to experience a vegetarian diet one day a week.

For some, vegetarianism is a practice for the planet, for others it's a way to care for their bodies, and for others it's a language of compassion and respect.
In this novel, rather than debating whether vegetarianism is right or wrong, I wanted to show the possibility that 'you can choose differently.'

I hope that Green, City, and Lee Jin have shown their potential well.

The photograph "Ice Bed" featured in the novel is the work of British amateur photographer Nima Sarikani.
This photo of a polar bear in Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago where climate change is rapidly melting ice, has been named the best wildlife photo of 2023.
I sincerely hope that the piece of ice where the polar bear sleeps will not melt any more.
And the reusable shared cup, 'Dodolli Cup', is an eco-friendly project that is underway in the area where I live.
We are delighted to introduce a cup with a beautiful name and wonderful meaning.
I hope it becomes a cup that is active and continuously loved.

Last winter, I completed the first draft of the novel at the Land Culture Center in Wonju, Gangwon Province.
I would like to give special thanks to the chef at the Toji Cultural Center restaurant who carefully prepared my menu for me as a vegetarian.
The rice cake soup that was prepared separately for the Lunar New Year was very delicious and warm.
Although it is quite late, I would like to express my gratitude to the publisher who believed in me and waited for me, and to the editorial staff who worked hard for the publication.

Dear young people.
Someday, when we meet and talk about veganism, how about some rye morning bread for a snack? With chickpea hummus.

Shh! It's a secret from Cho-rok-i.
