Our star
Description
Book Introduction
From theaters to ships, from school plays to factory tours, regardless of location or form.
Yukio Shiba's 2010 54th Kishida Kunio Playwright Award winner, who presents a variety of plays
2017 Korean premiere at Dongsoong Arts Center
"Our Star" compares the Earth to an ordinary girl, "Earth," and depicts the vast distance from the solar system to the end of the universe and the 5 billion years until the Earth's destruction, a time that humans cannot fathom. It wittily captures our daily lives, which seem repetitive but are different every day, with lines and raps that make use of the subtlety of language.
The setting of the work is the 19th Cosmos Apartment complex.
The family of the girl 'Earth', who had been alone for 600 million years, moved into the Cosmos Apartment today.
Next door lives a girl named 'Dal' who is slightly smaller than Earth.
The two are always together and become best friends, but because of the orbit, they become closer and then gradually grow apart, and now they are childhood friends who cannot meet again.

Into the book
“Our Star” was born in 2009 at the Star Hall of the Mitaka City Arts and Culture Center.
In 2011, when the chaos of the Great East Japan Earthquake had not yet subsided, “Our Star” set out on a journey to various parts of Japan.
And then we had our third performance in 2015.
I came back to this theater like a star circling the night sky.
How have we changed over the past six years? There must have been many new things born, many things lost.
“Our Star” is a work that depicts both of these.
“Our Star” is a work that depicts all of these simultaneously.
---From the author's note
Thank you very much for coming to see “Our Star” today.
Please be sure to turn off your cell phone, as it may disturb the performance.
(Conveying other notes) The show is about to begin.
The lights will turn off in about 4 seconds from now.
Thank you for your understanding.

Mr. Sun (A), the star is spinning.
Man (B) Yes, that's a bicycle.
A bicycle?●
South (A) speed is 1700 kilometers per hour.
It's faster than sound. ●
---p.67
Shall we play house?
I like the moon.
Let's play house.
Let's do it! Let's do it!
Then, I think that because of the wounds in my heart that were once broken due to a personal matter, no matter how much I do
Even though the girls struggled and couldn't be honest, they felt guilty and told each other in their young hearts.
A child's play where you say goodbye, leaving behind a small lump and a scar!
---p.104
To the moon and Earth.
How are you? I'm fine, I guess.
Earth, I just played with you and we just broke up.
I am writing this letter to you
I feel so strange.
What are you doing now? I'm writing a letter.
Rani, that's obvious.
Ah, already useless
I wrote four lines.
What will we be doing 10 billion years from now?
What will the world be like 10 billion years from now?
If we still get along well 10 billion years from now
That would be nice.
---p.177~178
I'm dying from lack of oxygen
The moon is destroyed by food shortages
Dad is dying from global warming
Mom disappears in the ice age
Grandma disappears due to rising sea levels
Sister, you are dying due to lack of water
Teacher is destroyed by meteorite impact
I am destroyed by a major earthquake
The moon is destroyed by a new virus
Dad, the ozone layer is destroyed and you're gone
Mother Earth is disappearing due to oil depletion
The grandmother population is increasing and disappearing.
Sister, you will be destroyed by nuclear war.
Teacher, something is disappearing
I am destroying myself
I/the moon is destroyed by the expansion of the sun
Ah/eom/seon/hal birth
Na/eon/dal destruction

Publisher's Review
A work inspired by Thornton Wilder's play Our Town
The play “Our Star,” completed in 2009, is based on the author’s novel of the same name.
Additionally, in the author's note, Yukio Shiba writes, "I imagined that if Thornton Wilder were alive today, he would write a piece about 'planets,' and that's how 'Our Planet' was born," revealing that he was inspired by Thornton Wilder's play 'Our Town.'
Like the play "Our Town," which makes us realize the value of a simple life, "Our Star" makes modern people, who are growing distant from the happiness that comes from ordinary things such as the starlight in the night sky, the apartment we lived in as children, the hole-in-the-wall store in front of the school, and neighborhood friends, realize how precious each day that passes by without a second thought is.
Are you watching me die?
Am I being born while I'm watching?
Are you watching me being born?
Am I dying as I watch?
Am I being born while I'm dying?
happy birthday!
Additionally, 『Our Star』 chose the 'rap' format, which adds beats to music, as a unique way of delivering dialogue that has never been seen before.
The repetitive rhyme of 'rap' is perfect for expressing the daily life that is repeated but changes little by little.
In this way, 『Our Star』, which brings out the subtlety of language through variation and repetition, will approach readers like a piece of music with its unique rhythm.
“I also had a dream that one day I would incorporate my favorite rap into a play and create a new musical.
It was Time Signal that connected these two dreams: space and music.
“Because planets, people, anyone and everything in this universe, they all live on the music of time.” _From the author’s words
