"Current Issues Youth Must Know" is a series of current issues selected by current journalists and delivered through vivid content based on their field experience.
Every year, the authors of 'Current Affairs' put a lot of effort into selecting items to ensure substance.
This year, the authors put a lot of thought into two things.
One was, 'What are the important events or topics that caught people's attention this year?' and the other was, 'What are the things that teenagers should know about?'
From over 100 candidates, we held in-depth discussions and selected 12 issues that met both criteria.

At first, there were some points where opinions were divided, but after much discussion, the remaining issues were finally selected unanimously.
There is a unanimous consensus that this is something young people absolutely must know.
The twelve issues covered in this book are a sum total of my senses and wisdom, which I have seen, heard, felt, and written about through direct experience in the field.

Publisher's Review
What issues shook South Korea over the past year?

As the Yoon Seok-yeol administration took office in May 2022 amidst a minority government and a majority opposition party, a "veto-rule" regime became entrenched.
The vicious cycle of ‘legislative force → presidential veto → National Assembly re-vote → bill scrapping’ is repeating itself.
Can the giant opposition party continue to push for 'legislation on its own'?
Can the President exercise his veto power without limitation?

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is rapidly advancing, presenting a range of challenges. While some optimistically predict that AI's application in various fields, including medicine, will dramatically improve human lives, there are also pessimistic views, arguing that it will pose a threat to human life by raising social and ethical issues. Should the advancement of AI technology be encouraged or regulated?

The war, which began with a surprise dawn attack on Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, has lasted over a year.
The war shows no signs of abating, and is heading towards escalation with Iran joining in.
Not only soldiers, but also innocent civilians were taken hostage and executed.
Why do Middle East wars continue?
Is there no solution?

The medical community is strongly opposing the government's plan to increase the number of medical school students by 2,000.
Residents are leaving hospitals, medical students are taking a leave of absence en masse, and the medical system is paralyzed.
While the government argues that the number of doctors should be increased to meet the rapidly aging population, the medical community opposes such an increase.
Can increasing the number of medical schools save the most difficult problem of all: regional and essential medical care?

The minimum wage has surpassed 10,000 won for the first time in 37 years since its introduction in 1988.
The management world claims it is high, while the labor world counters that it is low.
It's not just about the amount of money.
The business community is demanding that the minimum wage be applied differently by industry, citing the serious management difficulties faced by small business owners and the self-employed, while the labor community is opposed to this.
How should we view the minimum wage and its differential application by industry?

In February 2023, the school violence incident involving the son of attorney Jeong Sun-shin ignited the controversy over school violence.
As the controversy grew, Attorney Jeong tendered his resignation a day before his official inauguration as head of the headquarters.
The Netflix drama "The Glory," which tells the story of a victim of school violence's personal revenge, also expanded the issue of school violence.
The story of the victim, Dong-eun, taking revenge on the group that tormented her gave viewers vicarious satisfaction.
Can school violence be eradicated?

There are children who are born into this world but whose existence is not acknowledged.
These are 'shadow children' whose births have not been registered.
Amidst a series of cases of abandoned children, the 'Birth Notification System' requiring medical institutions to report births was recently passed by the National Assembly.
What preparations does our society need to make to protect the lives that deserve to be blessed?

As the issue of infringement of teachers' rights came to light, the controversy surrounding the student human rights ordinance spread.
While the government pointed to the Student Human Rights Ordinance as one of the reasons for the decline in teachers' authority, progressive superintendents and educational organizations countered that student human rights and teachers' authority are not conflicting concepts.
Are teachers' rights and students' rights inversely proportional, or are they complementary concepts?

The sound of babies crying is disappearing in South Korea.
It is predicted that small local cities that are already experiencing population decline will enter a virtual 'extinction' phase where there will not even be any population left.
In Korea, which is expected to enter a super-aged society by 2050, the problem of local regions is no longer 'aging' but 'extinction'.
Is there no way to break the cycle of 'low birth rate → population decline → local extinction'?

American artificial intelligence startup OpenAI released 'ChatGPT' on November 30, 2022.
It caused a stir by surpassing 100 million users in just two months after its launch.
ChatGPT surprised people by giving them answers that were so plausible that they felt like they were talking to a real person.
What does the future hold for ChatGPT? Can our country avoid losing its "AI sovereignty"?

PC is an abbreviation for Political Correctness, which is usually interpreted as 'political correctness'.
With PC versus anti-PC ideology emerging as a key issue in the 2024 US presidential election, Korea is no longer a bystander in the PC war. Can PCism become a driving force for positive change in our society?
