Reading classics is not always easy to begin.
Especially when reading foreign classics while understanding a different culture from our own, we need to read at a higher level than usual.

If you begin reading classics with this book, you will be able to immerse yourself in the works more easily and enjoyably.

--- From the author's preface on p.11-13

They also limit free thought by creating 'new words' to reduce the number of words in our vocabulary.
As the number of languages available to us decreases, people naturally forget how to think deeply.
Furthermore, by creating an environment of 24-hour high-level surveillance through 'telescreens' and 'thought police', they indoctrinate people into believing in conflicting beliefs through 'doublethink', which is the same as 'facts' but not 'facts' and 'things that exist', thus making people lose all sense of truth and morality.
This makes it easier for the ruling class to fabricate the truth.

--- p.18-19 from "1984"

Because the old man was a fisherman who belonged to the former category, he gave meaning to the process of fishing itself, which could be a material defeat, and did not become mentally discouraged or frustrated.
Even when being dragged around by a bluefin tuna, rather than scolding or resenting yourself, you console, cheer, and encourage yourself.
The lives of the elderly place more weight on the process than the result, and on the means and methods rather than the goal.
--- p.52 "The Old Man and the Sea"

When we look back on his life, we can imagine how great the conflicts he experienced regarding religion, between good and evil, and between ideals and reality must have been.
In the midst of these conflicts, anguish, and life crises, in the process of trying to heal the pain, perhaps he wanted to say through "Demian" that in such times, we must listen to our inner selves, hear the voice within us, and navigate life, and that ultimately, moving forward requires our own will?
--- p.63 From "Demian"

Even when Atticus took up his defense, when he stood in court with him, Tom must have had hope that justice would prevail.
But as the trial began, he witnessed firsthand the entrenched white supremacy that made it acceptable to sacrifice even a single black person for the sake of white people, and experienced it triumph over justice, and he must have given up all hope.

--- p.171 From "Killing a Mockingbird"

There are countless plagues in human life, such as war, crime, and misfortune.
The suffering symbolized by the 'pest' has been with us until now, and will continue to come without disappearing.
Through the various characters in the novel, I hope you will think about what kind of mindset you should have in the face of the plague of trials and tribulations.

--- p.298 From "The Plague"

The great 20th-century American writer Hemingway said, “All modern American literature originates from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”
Many authors have mentioned it as a great piece of literature that embodies the identity of American literature, with some saying, “This is the most American of all,” and as various studies have been conducted, it has come to be recognized as America’s most representative classic novel.
In particular, the fact that it directly addressed racial discrimination, which was considered taboo at the time, and portrayed black people as individuals was the biggest reason why it was highly regarded by later generations.
