The Usefulness of Courage
Description
Book Introduction
About the six bittersweet 'courage' surrounding puberty.
"The Use of Courage" is an anthology novel for young adults written by six authors that captures the diverse lives of young people as they overcome fear and anxiety and grow through the challenges they face for the first time in their lives.
Yeon-woo (Where the Train Ran), who encounters her father's intense life for the first time; Dong-woo (Result of Result) who skips school for the first time in his life; Eun-gyeol (Magic Hour) who has to appear on a fundraising broadcast for her father who was involved in a car accident; Soo-rim (Ban Sa-kyung) who discovers her own identity among her friends who criticize her, her music teacher who supports her, and her homeroom teacher who just stands by; Na-young (Mom's Favorite) who repairs her relationship with her mother by cooking for her; and a girl who sees her true face through a friend she pitied (When I First Saw My Face).
The lives that teenagers face are not easy, so it is difficult to dismiss them as 'just like puberty'.
That is why the word that young people need most right now is definitely ‘courage.’
As you follow the protagonists in various situations as they overcome difficulties and find courage, the form and utility of courage, once abstract and vague, will feel tangible and close at hand.

Into the book
We slept really close together, in a small cave where we couldn't even turn over.
My father's strong muscles pressed down on my bones like iron bars, leaving me unable to move.
My father held my hand tightly once in the wee hours of the morning and left.
I also woke up soon and bought some water, two triangle kimbap, and a bag of ramen at the convenience store in Seoul Station, then boarded the train.
The train powerfully pushed through the shantytown surrounded by high-rise buildings.
Now, wherever this train runs, you will encounter vast skies, deep blue mountains, and wide fields.
The sky is good because it is the sky, and the mountain is good because it embraces the forest and trees.
I hope my father will return when the green, undulating fields turn golden and it's time for harvest.
When my father sits on the tractor like a general, harvesting ripe rice and tying the sacks, I will wave my arms high and smile brightly at him.

“Do you know what you just did?”
“I did it?”
“You just came out during class.
That's the result."
"result?"
“Yeah, the result.
You skipped class.
If you don't go to school, you will be absent, and if you miss class, there will be consequences.
I don't know?"
“Oh, I know.”
Dongwoo didn't want to argue about terminology right now.
"okay.
“The result is that I am the only one, so you go back.”
As Dongwoo quickened his pace, Seman followed him.
“I can’t just go.”
"then?"
“I have to take you.”
Dongwoo was shocked.
Jang Se-man, was he always this eccentric? Well, I couldn't say I knew much about him.
Half of the second semester had already passed, but I don't remember having a long conversation with Se-man or doing anything with him.
All Dongwoo knew about Seman was that he seemed to like science.
Because I asked the teacher a lot of questions during the lab time.
“I didn’t know, but you’re kind of funny.”
At Dongwoo's words, Seman shook his head and said.
“You too.
“I didn’t know you would act like this today.”

Eun-gyeol took a deep breath and then knocked on the door.
There was no sound, but Eun-gyeol spoke loudly.
"Auntie, are you asleep? I have something to tell you, my drinking buddy."
Eun-gyeol swallowed dryly and put his ear to the door.
After a while, I heard my aunt's movements, and then I heard the sound of a switch being pressed.
“Come in.”
Eun-gyeol carefully opened the door.
The room was as soft as a morning glow.
It was because of the light on the side table.
Eun-gyeol's heart also swayed like that light.
"It's magic hour," Eun-gyeol muttered softly as she crossed the threshold.

Follow me, follow ...
The carousel soared into the air.
Without realizing it, I went back to the day before Subin was born and went to the amusement park with my mom and dad.
Life was an uphill climb back then.
And slowly the wooden horse begins to rush downwards.
Subin was born, Subin got sick, and Mom got sick too.
And I couldn't keep my promise to my two friends… .
As I thought about it, tears began to flow.
My fingers trembled and slipped off the keys.
The sound was out of tune and all messed up.
I was really going crazy.
It was dizzying.
I hesitated for a moment, wondering if I should stop, then took a deep breath again.
Yeah, since it's already ruined, it might as well be ruined forever.
He bit his lip and released his hand in mid-air for a brief moment.
The strength left my fingers.
I went back to the keyboard and made a couple of mistakes.
But it was really strange.
When I thought I was done for, my mind was at ease and my fingers found their pace and started playing again without any problem.

It was a different weekend scene than usual.
My mom and I switched places, but it wasn't too bad.
I barely managed to get rid of the mountain of dishes.
I didn't eat much, but it was a mystery why there was so much dishwashing.
My feet hurt so much from standing for so long that I did some stretching.
Before I knew it, my mother was lying face down on the table, asleep.
“Mom! Go to your room and sleep comfortably.
“It’s hard to sleep on your stomach, huh?”
This time, I was the one who nagged my mom.
I could feel a little of the heart contained in that nagging.
We wondered what our recipes would taste like in the future.

I thought I should give Gina a separate nickname too.
What kind of person is Gina? What kind of thoughts does she have in her life? I'm only now becoming truly curious about her.
What did I want from Gina herself, beyond what I wanted to do with her? What did Gina's true face look like, inside the sealed device, apart from a shell cut off from the world?
The questions about Gina continued one after another.
And then, the face I saw for the first time today became clearer and clearer.
Thinking of Gina makes me clearer.
It was really amazing.

Publisher's Review
Warm sincerity from six writers
About the six bittersweet 'courage' surrounding puberty.
When you're young, it's not that hard to shout in front of people, jump from high places, or ask for help when you're sick or in trouble.
But when you're in your teens, it takes 'courage' to do such things.
This book honestly tells the stories of six teenagers who hesitate before the small and large obstacles they encounter on the path to adulthood.
A novel of hope for young people passing through the brief but brilliant magic hour.
Author Lee Ok-su's "Where the Train Ran" tells the story of Yeon-woo, who takes the KTX alone for the first time in her life to meet her father, who has left for Seoul to earn money.
My father clearly lives in Seoul, but when I went to find his house, it was a small shantytown where I could barely fit one person.
Yeonwoo's mother passed away early from illness, and her father sold the tractor he drove in the countryside to pay for the hospital bills and eventually left for Seoul to find work.
When I met my father after a few months, his face was thin, but his smile was still the same.
A novel that shows the process of choosing hope and courage in the face of a bleak and dark reality.
Author Jo Gyu-mi's "Result of the Result" contains the story of one day when Dong-woo, who was bullied by his classmates and was unjustly made the perpetrator, skipped class and played dummy (Result, 缺課).
Seongminjae has been secretly harassing Dongwoo.
One day, the bullying starts again, and Dong-woo can't stand it anymore and gets into a fist fight with Seong-min-jae. Seong-min-jae takes pictures of the injuries he received and cosplays as the victim.
On the day Seongminjae returns to the classroom, Dongwoo, who is so excited by Seongminjae's confident appearance, runs out of the classroom during class.
Se-man, who had been watching this situation for a long time, follows Dong-woo.
A novel that shows the process of Dong-woo and Se-man becoming true friends after taking on a small deviation called 'result'.
Author Kang Mi's "Magic Hour" deals with the episodes that occur when Eun-gyeol, who had been living with her father after her parents' divorce, ends up staying at her aunt's noodle restaurant after her father's accident.
Eun-gyeol's mother, with whom she had lost contact for a long time, suggests that she appear on a fundraising broadcast.
Although Eun-gyeol has lived obediently and without any presence, appearing on a fundraising broadcast is not an easy thing to accept.
Eun-gyeol works at her aunt's noodle shop and enjoys the short, evening sunset, the magic hour, where she begins to pay attention to herself for the first time and makes the decision to live her own life.
Myung Hye-jeong's "Reflections" tells the story of Surim, a talented piano player who has lost the will to live.
Surim is forced to confront her true self between Serang and Minhyung, who were once her best friends but are now enemies, her homeroom teacher who shows no interest in her, and her music teacher who recognizes her musical talent and offers a helping hand.
Will Surim's life, which is heading downhill, be able to hit rock bottom and start an upward curve?
Author Choi Hyun-joo's "Mom's Favorite" contains the story of Na-young, who had no interest in her mother at all, realizing her mother's presence during her two-day absence and taking a step closer to her.
Nayoung and her mother are a mother and daughter going through a typical menopause vs. puberty period.
One day, while they were growling at each other, Na-young feels the void her mother has left for the first time in her life when her mother is hospitalized with acute stomach cramps.
Na-young, who never thought her mother would have a taste, discovers her mother's favorite while looking through the album...
Eun-gyu Choi's "When I First Saw My Face" tells the story of a protagonist who wants to save Gu Jin-a, a friend who is called an outcast, a star, and a hater at school, in her own way.
The protagonist always wanted to live in a kind and gentle world.
So, I wanted Gujina to live like that too, and I extended a helping hand to Gujina, who no one else approached.
However, as his relationship with Gujina goes awry, he begins to realize that there were problems with the things he thought he did with good intentions… .
These six short stories contain warm perspectives and stories that encourage those who need a little courage in moments of despair when it seems impossible to do anything.
