Yoo Si-min's special lecture on writing
Yoo Si-min's special lecture on writing
Description
Book Introduction
A customized special lecture from 'representative writer' Yoo Si-min for those who are afraid of writing!

From his debut work [Reading World History Backwards] to his latest works [How to Live] and [My Modern Korean History], almost all of his published books have become bestsellers, establishing Yoo Si-min as a true representative writer of the Republic of Korea.
Because of this, the author had to hear countless questions from people, such as, “Do you have any secrets to writing well?” and “How did you become so good at writing?”
[Yoo Si-min's Special Lecture on Writing] is also Yoo Si-min's answer to that question.

This book is based on the author's writing lectures.
A few years ago, a special writing lecture held at a high school went viral online, prompting the author to hold a free essay writing lecture for teenagers and parents once a month in seven cities across the country, including Jeju, Busan, Gwangju, Daejeon, and Gangwon, in the second half of 2014.
However, half of the audience were middle and high school students and elementary school students, and the other half were college students, office workers, and parents.
Writing wasn't just a concern for teenagers preparing for college entrance exams.
Because the audience was so diverse, it was difficult to determine the content and level of the lecture.
Although I tried to focus on middle and high school students while also considering college students and working adults, it was difficult to cover both the general theory of logical writing and practical essay test tips in depth in a two-hour lecture.

So I wrote [Yoo Si-min's Special Lecture on Writing].
The first volume covers general writing for anyone to read, while the second volume covers test writing for teenagers and others who need to take essay tests, and is scheduled for publication in June 2015.
In this book, the author has revealed, without reservation, the business secrets he has accumulated over 30 years as a writer.
Through this, it conveys to readers the simple truth that anyone can write like Yoo Si-min if they put in the effort, even if they were not born with a talent for writing.

Yoo Si-min's 30-Year Bestseller: Business Secrets
[Yoo Si-min's Special Lecture on Writing]

To you who is afraid of writing
A customized special lecture by 'representative writer' Yoo Si-min!

From self-introductions to corporate humanities essay tests, columns, and essays
How can I write the way I want?

[Yoo Si-min's Special Lecture on Writing] is a book for those who want to write logically, rather than poetry or novels.
This book will be useful to readers who want to write well in essays, self-introductions, humanities essays for corporate entrance exams, college student reports, newspaper articles, reviews, social critiques and academic papers, product manuals, press releases, cultural heritage guides, statements, declarations, reports, essay tests, sports game reviews, new product reviews, and restaurant tours.

I divide the writing into two main parts.
Literary (or artistic) writing and logical (or engineering) writing.
Literary writing is greatly influenced by talent.
You need to have the imagination to create something and the sensitivity to feel things in a different way than others.
But logical writing is much less so.
Logical writing is much less influenced by talent than literary writing.

If you're not aspiring to be a poet or a novelist, but just want to write well for work or as a hobby, there's no need to fear a lack of talent.
There's no need to blame your ancestors or genes if things don't go well.
There is no reason to be frustrated or give up without even trying.

_ From the text

People often think that writing can be done if you learn the method, but that's not all.
Learning how to do something is not enough.
You can only write well if you get used to it and make it a habit.
Writing is similar to driving a car in that respect.
Studying the structure and principles of automobiles does not mean you can drive one.
You have to train your body until the steering wheel, pedals, and gear shifters feel like they are part of your hands and feet.
To write well, you need to go beyond studying the structure of argumentative essays and the rules of logic and develop writing habits.
However, unlike driving, writing can be learned on your own without guidance from others.
I hope this book will be helpful to those who want to do so.
_ From the text

This book is full of the author's practical secrets for writing the essays you want to write.
It's packed with technical and practical information, from how to start your first sentence, how to spot bad writing, how to properly argue a topic, how to write correctly in Korean, how to improve your vocabulary, and even criteria for choosing books that will help you write, along with a strategic list of books.
Additionally, it compares well-written and poorly-written texts in detail using examples of various types of writing commonly encountered in daily life, from classical works to various newspaper columns and magazine articles, speeches by the Prime Minister, and decisions of the Constitutional Court.
Especially in the section where examples are boldly evaluated, the author's sharp perspective and logical analysis, which he displayed during his time as a debater, shine once again.
Thanks to this, readers can understand writing principles and theories that can sometimes feel difficult and abstract in a more interesting and easier way.
Moreover, simply by reading the various examples introduced in this book, you can acquire an eye for writing and develop your humanities knowledge.

3.
How do you write something that resonates with many people?

All bad writing is similar, and each good writing has its own unique reason.
_ From the text

People envy and even look up to those who are good at writing.
This is because writing skills are considered an indicator of the level of intelligence, not just a skill.
There is no room for debate that writing reveals the writer's intelligence, knowledge, intellect, values, and attitude toward life.
To write well, you must first have inner value to express.
You must know a lot.
You must be able to use a variety of vocabulary and accurate sentences.

But just because you use nice sentences doesn't mean you're a good writer.
Good writing is when the reader can feel, understand, and empathize with the writer's heart and thoughts.
To do that, you need to build something worth expressing inside yourself and have the ability to express it realistically and accurately.
If you write sentences well, you can be recognized for your 'writing skills'.
If you have a talent for writing, you can write to some extent well because you have to write.
However, it is difficult to gain sympathy or respect with just ‘writing skills’.

_ From the text

Skills are necessary, but skills alone cannot be used well.
You have to live well to be able to write well.
As the emotions and thoughts I gain from life accumulate inside me and overflow, they naturally become writing.
If those feelings and thoughts resonate, even a short piece of writing can move people's hearts and influence world affairs.

_ From the text

This book not only provides the technical secrets for writing excellent essays, such as a clear sense of theme, meaningful information, clear logic, and appropriate vocabulary and sentence structure, but also the concepts and knowledge necessary to write such essays properly.
This book meticulously explains how to read books containing the concepts and knowledge essential to understanding humanity, society, culture, history, life, nature, and the universe so that they can be incorporated into my writing, and how to write in a way that generates intellectual tension and interest and connects and empathizes with many people.

4.
"Yoo Si-min's Writing Counseling Center," a two-way communication platform with authors.

The author is also opening ‘Yushimin’s Writing Counseling Center’ with the publication of this book.
This is to overcome the limitations of books, which, due to their nature, can only convey one's experiences and knowledge to readers 'unilaterally'.
The author seeks to foster "two-way" communication by providing online feedback on readers' writing and by addressing readers' questions that arise after reading the book at least once a week.
Because I want to fulfill my responsibilities and obligations as an author through ‘after-sales service.’
From March 30, 2015, any reader who visits this address (http://m.newsfund.media.daum.net/project/165) can share their thoughts on writing with Yoo Si-min at any time.
