Description
Book Introduction
Solo travel that saves good feelings

At 50, I went to the hospital because I wasn't feeling well, and the diagnosis was aging! Aging! "Aging," I muttered to myself, feeling troubled as I looked at my face reflected in the bus window. My lips were drooping, and there was an inexplicable wrinkle between my eyebrows...
I feel like I'll just get more and more depressed if I leave it alone, so I decide to live happily and enjoyably from now on, having wonderful experiences.
After pondering over what I could do to maintain my health and also accumulate positive emotions, I tried various things and came to the conclusion that it was 'solo travel'.

The author used to travel alone until his early 20s, but completely forgot about those times as he entered his 30s and 40s.
I was nervous at first because I always traveled with my family or girlfriend, but when I gathered my courage and went on a solo trip, it was full of exciting 'firsts' and encounters.

This book, which contains records of solo travel that began with a pounding heart at the age of 50, contains the author's reasons for deciding to travel and travel know-how in Chapter 1, chapters 2 and 3 describe travels in Japan and abroad, and the final chapter 4 introduces the author's unique methods for skillfully enjoying travel.

Into the book
As you get older, things that make you feel good definitely decrease.
But that doesn't mean we can just sit still.
I've been thinking a lot about what makes me feel good.
First of all, no matter what anyone says, your body and mind must be healthy.
What can I do to maximize my health while also saving up a lot of good feelings?
After trying various things, the conclusion I came to was 'traveling alone'.
--- p.6~7

To begin with, I'm not good at doing things alone.
Even if you long to eat or drink alone, you can't put it into practice.
If I were alone, I would just turn around and say I would eat and drink at home, a timid person without any courage.
Well, maybe it's because I'm overly self-conscious that I'm overly conscious of being alone.
--- p.17

Also, at this age, isn't being around other people a bit tiring? When I feel a little tired, I often find comfort in spending time alone.
Going to an art gallery, reading a book leisurely, or watching a movie is actually more enjoyable when done alone, and sometimes it seems necessary to keep the mind calm.
--- p.21

Walk around the city freely, stopping here and there.
It's really perfect for solo travel.
A solo trip where you don't need to discuss or compromise with others about where to go.
Isn't that the charm of solo travel, that there's no place you 'must' go to?
The more you travel alone, the more deeply you become moved and immersed in it.
--- p.31

I ordered a local beer and drank it down.
I feel relieved. Wow, I really felt relieved because I was alone.
I was worried that I would become overweight, so I skipped rice and only ate my favorite fruit for dessert, not caring about what other people thought.
--- p.92

As I got older, I began to think of travel as a 'morning treasure'.
The morning, before the streets start moving, is for the people who live there.
Osaka is especially good on a clear morning.
--- p.109

Once I discovered the joy of walking alone, I realized that Kyoto was no longer a mysterious and magical city.
It's a place with endless charm, with new discoveries every time I go.
There is something that is only available here and you can walk around for a long time.
--- p.120~121

There were also a few customers who came alone at the counter.
Oh my, I felt relieved.
I had two glasses of wine with the terrine de Campagne and carrot lapais.
I had a short dinner for about an hour, without talking to anyone, just by myself, daydreaming to my heart's content, looking at the small but powerfully flowing river, the quiet residential area, and the occasional person who seemed to be coming home from work or riding a bicycle.
--- p.157~158

A trip without sightseeing.
It's possible because I'm traveling alone.
A rewarding trip that gives me just the time of my life, with the freedom to sleep in, enjoy a pool, get a massage, go shopping, and have a drink in the lobby.
I feel ten times more affectionate than before I left on my trip.

--- p.226

What to eat while traveling? And alone.
It will be an important issue for everyone.
I'm sure I'm not the only glutton who's like this.
After all, one of the joys of traveling is delicious food.
No, that's the main topic (right?).
--- p.251

I would be truly happy if you read this book and thought, "Where should I go on a solo trip?"
I hope that life will be a pleasant journey that makes you think about it and smile brightly.
--- p.271

Publisher's Review
* Amazon Japan Bestseller

The 50s are a great age to travel alone.

Adult solo travel has its own unique charm.
Your 50s are a great age to travel alone.
I sincerely hope that after reading this book, you'll think, "Should I try traveling alone?" I dedicate this book to those, like me, who find it difficult to take even one step.
_Author's Message

By the time you reach your 50s, you are an adult who has experienced the bitterness and sweetness of life to some extent.
Since you have a lot of life experience, you won't be intimidated by hotels or restaurants, and you'll know what kind of atmosphere you don't like, so you can avoid them in advance.
I don't drink or eat like crazy and I don't fall in love easily.
And I know very well what is precious.

Also, at this age, being together with other people is a bit tiring and exhausting.
Traveling with friends is fun, but because our families and financial situations are different, it's difficult to adjust the travel period, destination, and route.
Wouldn't it be nice to travel alone and lightly? With this thought in mind, the author embarked on a journey of "going first."
Before and after traveling with your family or partner, try spending 3-4 days alone.

So, if you're traveling alone at age 50, how should you choose your destination and how should you pack?
The author says that he wrote this book in the hopes that it would be a reference for first-time or long-time solo travelers, providing as much detail as possible about what to do at the travel destination, recommended travel courses, and experiences.
After all, one of the joys of traveling is eating delicious food.
As a culinary researcher, the author loves to eat and is not afraid to travel long distances for delicious food. He also included his experience of naturally starting to eat and drink alone, albeit awkwardly, and information on restaurants he recommends to solo travelers.

Riding the longed-for limited express "Hida", I fell in love with the breathtaking scenery, walked around Kyoto to see the true face of the streets, and visited Okinawa, Taiwan, and Paris all by myself.
Although she was timid and unfamiliar with traveling, she said that she took courage and started traveling alone, and that she was able to have various experiences that renewed her and had a wonderful, thrilling time.
I end my solo travelogue at age 50, feeling like I want to treat this world a little more kindly and having gained something precious.
