Book Introduction
2023 Vivid Tourism Trends from Around the World
A story about tourism that saves each other, not tourism that consumes.

"World Tourism Trend Insights 2023 - There's a Reason for Rising Tourism" is a book compiled by the Korea Tourism Organization, in collaboration with its overseas branch staff, of cases from around the world that are leading the tourism industry in 2023.
In particular, it details how tourism products developed to overcome the problem of regional extinction, which is emerging as a global problem, have led to the revitalization of the local economy.

Part 1: Creative Content examines tourism development cases that have captured the public's attention with "content" that requires creativity and artistry, such as media content and works of art.

Part 2 Rebranding (New Again) contains examples of cities being revitalized by giving new value to declining industries that were once the cornerstones of the region but were disappearing with the times.

Part 3, Sustainable, introduces examples of developing local history, traditional culture, and natural environments into tourism products without compromising economic and social benefits, so that future generations can continue to utilize the environment and heritage.
Part 4 Collaboration presents examples of local residents and outsiders (companies, universities) developing unique local items and tourism resources through joint projects.
Part 5, Innovation, features examples of governments implementing systematic tourism development policies to fully support local community development.
By examining examples from around the world of how regions have overcome the crisis of extinction by developing tourism products that reflect their unique character and characteristics, we can explore what is needed to revitalize regional tourism.

Into the book
New York remains a hub for trade, entertainment, and tourism.
Thanks to Chelsea Market, which has become a representative tourist attraction in New York through urban regeneration, and the High Line Park, a park created by remodeling an abandoned commercial railroad along the Hudson River on Manhattan's west side, Chelsea is considered one of the hippest and most artistic areas in New York.
Chelsea Market, which is also designated as a National Historic Preservation District, attracts 6 million domestic and international visitors annually.

In 2013, Detroit was left in ruins, facing bankruptcy with $18 billion in debt.
However, through rebranding of the city's diverse assets, including music and automobiles, it is now being revived as an innovative tourist city.
From world-class museums and an incredible variety of culinary options to culturally inspired bars and music venues, Detroit is one of America's most exciting cities right now.

Japan is a country of sake, with over 1,500 breweries nationwide.
Among them, Kashima Sakagura Tourism is considered a successful example of regional revitalization through local content.
By restoring the area's aging historical buildings to create streets and adding value to local breweries and sake, using the area as a stage to foster tourism content called "Sakagura Tourism," it is a representative example of local tourism revitalization that responds to the extinction of the area and serves as a model for other regions.
In particular, the term "sakagura tourism" and the concept of tourism content, which first started in Kashima, are now being used for brewery tours throughout Japan.

The Altai region's rural tourism project is an effective example of the revitalization of small local towns facing extinction due to aging and depopulation.
By developing various programs to meet the needs of tourists, the region has not only grown its resources into an international tourism industry, but has also presented a model for future industries that rural areas can develop.
'Altai' means 'gold' in Mongolian, and there are actual gold mines there.
However, the rich natural environment is the true gold of Altai.

Like other countries, China also faces serious problems of aging and poverty among its rural population.
Accordingly, rural development and promotion are considered the most important government policies every year.
Recently, there has been a boom in rural travel outside of major cities in China, which is greatly contributing to the development of rural areas through tourism.
Especially in the current situation where overseas travel has become difficult due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese rural travel market is experiencing unprecedented growth opportunities and is leading the growth of the domestic travel market.
Another name for Mingwei Village is Isangchon.
Just as the Chinese regard the moon as an ideal symbol, Mingyu Village is being reborn as another ideal place for the Chinese.

The ancient cities of the Golden Ring are often called "open-air architectural museums" because they contain well-preserved buildings depicting major events in medieval and imperial Russian history, particularly the Russian Orthodox Church from the 12th to 18th centuries.
The picturesque scenery of unique Russian traditional cathedrals with colorful onion-shaped roofs and simple rural villages, combined with the hourly chimes of Russian Orthodox churches, provides a unique atmosphere.
Due to their unique landscapes and cultural value, which allow visitors to experience Russia from 600 years ago, these eight cities were designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the 1990s.

Publisher's Review
A win-win project that brings the region's unique characteristics to life through tourism!
All about sustainable tourism!

The Korea Tourism Organization publishes "There's a Reason for Hot Tourism," which examines trends in the global tourism industry every year and provides a vivid picture of overseas tourism.

The keyword for 2023 is ‘regional extinction.’

The "disappearance of regions" due to low birth rates, aging populations, and youth population outflow is a challenge facing not only Korea but also many countries around the world.
As part of efforts to address the problem of regional extinction, many countries are actively promoting the development of unique tourism products.
This book is divided into five parts and introduces cases of overcoming the crisis of regional extinction through 'tourism' through the eyes of 32 branches of the Korea Tourism Organization in 22 countries.

Here you can find various examples of how history, tradition, culture, and natural environment have been transformed into unique tourist attractions: Australia, where a massive grain silo on the verge of being abandoned was painted, turning it into a road trip destination for countless tourists; Aoyama in Japan, where an entire island is filled with art galleries and artwork; Chelsea in New York, where a neighborhood lined with small factories and warehouses was transformed into a gallery street leading the global art scene; Detroit in the US, where a city declining with debt has become a city of gourmet restaurants and music brimming with cultural inspiration; Suwaydi in the United Arab Emirates, where the traditional values of pearl diving were rediscovered and experiential products were created; Kashima in Japan, where old houses were renovated to provide lodging facilities and programs for relaxation, brewery tours, and sake-making experiences; and Suzdal, where a humble rural village has rapidly risen to become a "Golden Ring" city steeped in Russian culture.

As the international tourism market recovers following the COVID-19 pandemic, the domestic and international tourism industries are restructuring their ecosystems to lay the foundation for a new leap forward.
The case studies from each country presented in this book will help expand high-quality tourism content that fosters coexistence with local communities and create new, eco-friendly tourism landmarks.
We hope to find new ways to overcome regional extinction by benchmarking places that have become luxury cities attracting tourists from all over the world.
