Philosophical Sentences for Controlling the Turmoil of the Mind
Description
Book Introduction
★ A new book by the best-selling author of "A Wise Man Distributes the Weight of Life", Jegal Geon.
★ Sentences from Eastern philosophy, from the Analects to the Book of Changes
★ The first Korean-language commentary included in a manuscript book!
“If you can have a deep conversation with your own heart, life will naturally become longer.”
Author Jegal Geon, who touched readers' hearts with "A Wise Man Distributes the Weight of Life," has now returned with a handwritten book.
The idea is to spend your day meaningfully by following the words of representative Eastern philosophers when your mind is in turmoil.
The word ‘copy’ means ‘to copy with a brush’, and even if you write just one sentence, it will remain in your mind when you write it with proper understanding.
This manuscript contains 140 carefully selected sentences from eight representative Eastern philosophical texts, along with modern commentary.
Therefore, this manuscript is significant in that it allows us to glimpse not only the wisdom of the sages but also the insights of young philosophers.
In today's world, where we are exhausted by external noise and mental conflicts, the most important thing we need to avoid losing ourselves is time for ourselves.
Even though 2,500 years have passed, I hope you will follow the wisdom that still touches our lives today and experience the realm of 'Jeongjungdong (靜中動)' where only the sentences and I exist in the midst of infinite silence.

Publisher's Review
Even if you write one sentence
If you know and use it properly, it will remain in your heart.
People's interest in 'copying', which involves copying sentences from a book, is hotter than ever.
At the heart of the writing craze is the desire to live a better life than we have now.
Perhaps it is the desire to "change," such as the belief that if you memorize good sentences, you will become a better person, or that you will use a more colorful vocabulary, that makes people imitate good sentences.
This type of writing craze has been going on for centuries.
In the past, scholars in the East would read scriptures, select the parts that would be helpful to their lives, and copy them down by hand.
For mankind, writing was a tool to cultivate one's life.
"Philosophical Sentences for Controlling the Turmoil of the Mind" is a book that selects 140 pieces of wisdom and proverbs from among the representative philosophies of the East that are essential for us living in the modern era.
No matter how good a sentence is, if I don't understand it properly, it's difficult to fully incorporate it into my life.
The author translated the original texts of eight classics, from the Analects of Confucius to the Book of Changes, into Korean, and added a second explanation of the meaning of the sentences at the bottom.
This is the only Korean-language commentary book in Korea, containing the author's keen insight into the present era, including commentary on old expressions, the origins of idioms, and the author's keen insight into the present era.
Still shining after 2,500 years
Adult Insights
“You can’t love someone just by keeping them in your heart.”
- Mozi, "The Book of Changes"
“The slender make the strong and strong soft, but people only try to make them sharp and sharp.”
- 『Zhuangzi』 〈Zaiyou〉
“When Heaven is about to give a man a great task, it must first torment his mind and will, make his bones and muscles toil, starve his body and skin, make his life impoverished, and distort and disturb everything he does.
The reason for doing so is to change the mind, to temper the temper, and to supplement and complement what is lacking.”
- 『Mencius』 (Gaozi, Part 1)
Reading classics, even though they were written a long time ago, is full of wisdom that we need today, surprising the reader.
Mozi's words remind us once again that things like love, respect, and excellence are truly meaningful when expressed in action rather than words.
Zhuangzi's words make me reflect on whether my attitude was sharp or whether it was none other than 'myself' who made my life difficult.
When we are so miserable that we feel as if heaven has abandoned us, Mencius's words comfort us.
The sentences of philosophy, which sometimes offer comfort like a friend and sometimes teach like a teacher, willingly become our compass in life whenever we lose our way.
Only peaceful silence
Calm the whirlwind of emotions
Since my state of mind changes every day, the sentences I need to read and write each day also change.
This book introduces one philosophical thought for each day of the week.
On Mondays, I copy passages from the Analects of Confucius, which provides the focus for the week; on Tuesdays, I copy passages from the Mencius, which fills my empty heart; and on Wednesdays, I copy passages from the Doctrine of the Mean and the Great Learning, which restore my exhausted mind.
On Thursday, I copy sentences from 『Han Feizi』, which provides a glimpse into human relationships and wisdom of life, on Friday, I copy sentences from 『Mozi』, which represents the spirit of universal love, on Saturday, I copy sentences from 『Zhuangzi』, which reminds me of peace of mind, and on Sunday, I copy sentences from 『I Ching Ji Shi Zhuan』, which helps me move forward to a better tomorrow.
The author of this book is a scholar of Eastern philosophy and a calligrapher.
Whenever my mind was in turmoil, I looked for the words of Eastern philosophers and wrote down in calligraphy, one by one, the words that touched my heart.
He explained why he reads and writes every day:
“If you copy someone else’s writing, you will be able to copy the meaning contained in the writing as well.
“Once you get used to copying meaning, you can write your own without having to look at someone else’s writing.”
There is a passage in the 『Zhuangzi』 that describes the human heart as something that cannot be restrained by being angry or boastful.
It is human nature for a good mood from yesterday to turn bad overnight.
This is true not only of other people's hearts but also of my own.
Emotional changes are natural, but if we don't try to understand the reasons for the changes, it is no different from neglecting our lives.
The more noisy the world is and the more I feel like I have no time to spare in life, the more I need to listen to my heart.
To prevent the noise of life from spreading to the noise of the mind, you must be able to have a deep conversation with your mind.
The life of such a person becomes long on its own.
If you're going through a storm of turbulent emotions, if you want to move forward to a better tomorrow, why not take some time for peaceful silence by following the wisdom of our ancestors?
If you know and use it properly, it will remain in your heart.
