Outgoing Message - A Treatment That Reads Beyond the Face to the Heart

Publisher's Review
Mini-interview with writer Ma Chang-seok

ㆍPlease briefly introduce yourself and provide your resume.
As an anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist, I live my life encountering the diverse faces and attitudes of patients in clinical settings.

ㆍWhat was the reason for publishing this book?
During my treatment, I often encountered the psychology of patients revealed in their facial expressions and speech.
However, there is almost no data that systematically organizes this.
In the end, I decided to write down my experiences in a book because I felt like they would disappear if I didn't.
Rather than a grand goal, the need to compile this story came first.

How long did it take from conception to final completion of the book? What was the most enjoyable or most difficult part of this process?
I've been planning the table of contents little by little for the past three years, and I've only been focusing on writing it for about three months.
The most enjoyable moments were when I was writing about my experiences and felt confident, “Oh, my fellow doctors will relate to this part.”
On the other hand, the difficult part was the process of self-censoring and refining how much of the honest stories from the medical field should be revealed.

ㆍI think this is one of the first books to cover interpreting patients through their facial expressions and attitudes. What was the impetus or reason for addressing this topic?
In the doctor's office, patients always signal to their doctors with their attitude before their words.
But we don't get training in medical school to interpret these "nonverbal cues."
I called it 'Physiognomy' and wanted to organize it into a treatment strategy rather than just a collection of episodes.

This book targets doctors. Is there a key message you'd like to convey to practicing physicians? And which sections do you think they'll find most engaging?
I want to convey the message that “patients read your facial expressions and attitude before what you say.”
Ultimately, treatment is not about technology, but about human relationships.
I think readers will most likely relate to the case study section, saying, "I've actually had this situation happen in my clinic."

ㆍPlease introduce your favorite passage from the book.
I would appreciate it if you could also tell me the reason.

The phrase I am most attached to is, “A doctor’s words are logic, but his facial expressions and gestures are atmosphere.”
This means that a single, unintentional facial expression from a doctor can influence the entire treatment, as patients perceive the atmosphere before logical explanations.
