A European sketching trip through everyday life
Description
Book Introduction
Everyday Sketch Traveler, Heading to Northern and Eastern Europe!

Illustrator Izumi Takahara, who goes on a sketching trip to Europe every summer, headed to the Baltic countries, Slovenia, and Croatia this time.
The author's personal travel rule is to choose places where he can see and experience the local life whenever possible.
I always visit small towns and villages that I don't usually visit, and I prefer accommodations that offer a sense of life, such as apartment hotels or rural farms.
Rather than rushing through tourist attractions, take your time and wander freely through medieval alleys that feel like you've stepped back in time, restaurants and cafes serving traditional cuisine, and bustling markets.
Then, whenever I encounter a scene that strikes me or a landscape that I like, I draw it. "A European Sketch Journey Through Everyday Life" contains nearly 100 sketches, drawn piece by piece over two trips.

The first is a journey starting in Helsinki, Finland, and traveling through the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
You can experience the history, culture, food, and scenery of Northern Europe, mainly centered around the capitals of the three Baltic countries.
The following year, we visited rural villages in Eastern Europe, Slovenia and Croatia.
In particular, in Croatia, I enjoyed the European countryside life by staying at the farm 'Casa di Matiki', where I have maintained a precious relationship since my first visit six years ago.
I cooked and ate with the landlady Sonya and spent a relaxing time with the farm animals, including dogs, cats, and chickens.
With watercolor illustrations that carefully capture the scene, you can experience the feeling of being immersed in European daily life rather than just traveling.

Into the book
“People often say that traveling is about escaping from everyday life, but my sketching journey is a process of capturing the everyday life of that place.
“We hope you enjoy the feeling of living in a small European town together.”

Publisher's Review
- How to travel daily life in Europe (1): What kind of house should I live in?

First, the author chooses ‘living space’ as a way to show the daily life of the travel destination.
This is because a house is a reflection of the daily life of the people who live there.
The detailed bird's-eye view and perspective drawings, like a doll's house, arouse curiosity about what kind of people lived here and how.
The author introduces various types of homes, including using two apartment hotels in one city and visiting museums that show the past life.

- How to travel daily life in Europe (2): What food should I eat?

Another material that captures everyday life is ‘food’.
I tasted and sketched each unfamiliar traditional dish, as if recording it: fried squid and sautéed herring from a port city, cepelinai (chewy potato dough filled with meat), kivinai (meat pies filled with lamb), chicken cutlets, goulash (simmered beef and paprika), and even the Slovenian dessert givanica.
Also, the sketches of the types of food and snacks you can buy at the supermarket will make you feel the joy of going to the market and looking around to choose items.

- How to travel everyday life in Europe (3): What streets and scenery should I visit?

Lastly, I captured the streets that the people who live there walk on every day, the small cafes they often visit, and the scenery they encounter on their walks.
A gelato shop with a view of Ljubljana Castle in Slovenia in the distance, a cafe where I accidentally stopped by for a delicious hot chocolate in Estonia, the smallest cafe in town, as well as the sunset seen in Kuldiga, a small Latvian town, a cat encountered in an alley in Vilnius, Lithuania, and the Art Nouveau buildings lining the Ljubljana River – these are all places where you can imagine the lives of the people who live there.

It's already been 10 years since I started my European sketching journey.
The illustrator traveled through small European towns by train, bus, and boat, capturing the scenery through watercolors as seen through the eyes of a traveler.
Every time you turn the page, you will feel as if you are traveling with the author into an unfamiliar yet warm Europe.
