Description
Book Introduction
'Roadtrip Nation' began in 2001 when three young men, facing college graduation and seriously contemplating their lives, embarked on a 'road trip' to find answers.
Nathan Gebhard, Mike Marriner, and Brian McAllister hit the road together in an old RV.
On the way, they met people they wanted to be like and interviewed them.
As they listened to the stories of people who were making a living doing what they truly loved, they gradually came to understand what kind of life they wanted.
After completing their trip, the three young men decided to start a company in 2003 to help friends with similar concerns to make similar trips.
The company's name is 'Roadtrip Nation'.

To help students travel, Road Trip Nation first partnered with PBS, a public broadcaster in the United States, to produce a documentary about their road trip experience.
Students selected through a rigorous screening process were interviewed around 30 times per team, and the process was broadcast annually on PBS.
The number of interviews accumulated in this way is over 3,500.
These interviews are categorized by topic and interest and are available on our website for easy access.
The students' experiences were produced and aired for 10 seasons and were also published as a book.
This book introduces the travel experiences and interview results of Road Trip Nation.

"Roadmap" compiles the journey of a road trip and provides program pages where readers can implement their own projects.
This book, which comprehensively covers Road Trip Nation's activities and results from the beginning to the present, advocates for the integration of work and life rather than separating them and finding balance.
Is it really possible to live a dream life doing what you love? Through the case studies of various leaders and road trip programs, this book explains that it's "possible" and how to realize that potential.

It is useful for students who are hesitating at the crossroads between dreams and reality, as well as for office workers in their 20s and 30s who are suffering from dissatisfaction with their current job, middle-aged people who want to take on a challenge but hesitate because they lack the courage to give up their current stable life, and middle-aged and elderly people who are feeling disillusioned with their lives of working like machines.
This book will help readers redefine challenge and passion, providing clues to the questions they should constantly ask themselves on their life's journey.
The project chapter at the end of the book presents specific programs to achieve work-life integration.
Readers who take this program seriously may find that this one book can provide a turning point in their lives.

Into the book
The world is changing rapidly.
Now is the time to shape the world by doing what we love.
The coming generations can and must lead lives never before seen.
What a thrill.
--- p. From the preface

What we learned along the way, and what we are still learning, is the core of this book.
It focuses on what we call 'self-making'.
We've come to realize that there's actually a path to a sustainable and fulfilling life—one where work and life are integrated, rather than one where we struggle to maintain a work-life balance.

--- p.18

The story John told brought relief and clarity to those of us who were cowering under the weight of anxiety about an uncertain future.
“I think the most important thing is to realize that everyone is afraid.
You're not alone in feeling anxious about the future.
Because no one has a clear vision for the future.
In fact, all you can do is share your feelings with your peers who are anxious and confused, and in doing so, find courage and comfort.”
--- p.20

“When things are going smoothly, you can tell that your mind is feeling it first.
I know how you feel.
There are things that make you feel like you've lost track of time without even realizing it.
It's something that makes you feel like you're playing."
Anthony Benezial, Assistant Artistic Director, Back House Productions, New York
--- p.119

Imagine you've been making coffee for years, barely scraping by, with dreams of becoming an actor, but no one wants to be an actor.
That doesn't mean you should turn your back on the entertainment industry entirely.
If you think more deeply and broadly, there may be a field that suits you better, such as casting, editing, producing, publicity, event planning for a film's release, or networking.
When you look at it with a flexible eye, there will be an endless supply of interesting things to do.

“Think of your situation as being like a tripod.
The legs of the tripod are each named ‘Luck’, ‘Talent’, and ‘Effort’.
If one of the three causes you to fall into any situation, you should get your other leg on the ground as quickly as possible.
This world is full of people who have talent but are pushed aside because they don't have luck or don't put in the effort.
Don't forget that the tripod's three legs can take you into any situation.
In such cases, we must connect the other two legs as quickly as possible, and hope for the day when all three legs will be connected.”
Walter Murch, editor/sound designer, Apocalypse Now

Publisher's Review
Block out the noise and get off the assembly line.

They say that young people are our future.
Because the dreams that young people unfold will soon become the world of the future.
How do our youth today portray their own self-portraits?
At the bottom of the rigid class pyramid of capitalism, people are exploited for cheap labor and even forced to show passion.
The term "surplus generation", which they coined to describe themselves as a generation that would rather not exist, lives listlessly from day to day, wasting their parents' retirement funds. This is the self-consciousness they use to define themselves.
Mentors from all walks of life share their inspiring success stories and advise us not to be afraid, to step outside the gates, and to march toward our dreams.
All of these cries may be heartfelt and sincere, but after the lecture ends or the books are closed, the young people who return to their daily lives are once again forced to remain in their comfort zone and become subordinate to a social system that seems to make it seem like the only way to survive is to conform to the given circumstances.
In a society without a safety net, how can young people find the courage to pursue the lives they want?

This book calls the established path within society an "assembly line," and argues that it limits individuals' work and life choices.
The assembly line has nothing to do with our own essence, and to become part of it without any real self-reflection, just because of the 'noise' around us, is to embark on a voyage of ignorance.
In a rapidly changing society, occupations also change rapidly, and in order to adapt flexibly to the times, you must always keep yourself in a 'beta version'.
It is not finished, so it is in progress and can be continuously upgraded.

This book features countless leaders who rejected the assembly line and found their own lives.
Black political activist Jeff Johnson, film director Richard Linklater, Jazz Museum CEO Gregory Carroll, rock climber and expedition photographer Jimmy Chin, Deon Clarke, founder of the non-profit Legacy Movement, Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada, Starbucks chairman Howard Schultz, Saturday Night Live director Beth McCarthy Miller, human genome sequencer Craig Venter, Austin Music Festival producer Terry Licona, Samuel Adams brewmaster and founder Jim Koch, U.S. Department of Justice Criminal Division's Human Rights & Special Prosecutor Brittan Heller, Vicarious Vision designer Vicki Smith, ImprovOlympics founder Tzarna Hal Fern, Juan Enriquez, who studies the intersection of science, economics, and sociology, professional mountaineer Mark Inglis, New York radio station RadioLab host Jad Abumrad, skateboarder Rodney Mullen, professional surfer Lane Beachley, international Ashfaq Ishaq, founder of the Children's Arts Foundation; Roy Remer, volunteer manager of the Zen Hospice Project; and Christina Heiniger, founder of Solar Consulting...
In addition, the names of countless pioneers of life met during the 10-year road trip journey appear.

Listening to subjective truth opens up new paths.

Not all of them have the same standards for success.
Everyone values something different, some have escaped the assembly line for titles, some for change, some for peace of mind, and some for public service.
But we can find common ground in the attitude with which they pursue their goals.
It means focusing on your inner self and following the voice of your heart.

Don't misunderstand what we mean.
I am not suggesting that you or I should quit our jobs and move to remote mountain villages to do manual labor.
What this means is that to reach a blank canvas, you need space.
Of course, that space doesn't necessarily have to be around a campfire under moonlight.
Any place that can refresh and stimulate your confused mind will suffice.

The message of Road Trip Nation isn't to just throw away what you're doing and wander around in search of your dreams.
Their goal is to distinguish between noise and non-noise, to listen more closely to the voice of their own heart, and to find a point within it where they can be creative.
In Chapter 2, they argue that new careers can be created by finding the intersection between two seemingly unrelated areas of interest and merging them.
Examples include sports journalist Ariel Helwani, who combined sports and journalism; David Neeleman, who combined business and travel to found JetBlue; and Rex Gringen, who combined math and design to create animation. The list goes on and on.
By listing the various fields you're interested in, pairing the ones that seem least likely to fit together, and finding the intersections, you can gain clues that can help you pioneer a new career that's right for you.

Anyway, go ahead and do it!

Chapter 3 of this book is filled with messages of encouragement to make decisions.
Just as a drop of water gathers to become a river and then an ocean, this book teaches us how doing one thing, then another, then another, and so on, can create a chain of actions that can become a massive stream, ultimately leading to a monumental moment.
We make many resolutions to change our lives, but there are always obstacles that prevent us from putting them into action.
In this book, we call it an automatic reflex response.
Because of the anxiety of making new choices, or because of the habits of being on an assembly line, we put off many of the plans we have in our heads.
This book asks, if there were a documentary about my week, and I was no better at the end of it than I was at the beginning, could I really say I could get better after that?

“If you really want to do something, you should already be doing it.”
Veronica Belmont, technology-related internet broadcaster and host

This book, like many self-help books, ultimately delivers the message of "Just do it." However, it is supported by a solid foundation of analysis gathered from over a decade of extensive road trips.
Readers will be able to observe leaders from around the world and themselves from the inside out, and gain insight into their own actions, leading them to make the decision to do it.
As the title of Chapter 16 suggests, "Your Decisions Make You," this book will enrich the inner lives of readers and inspire them to create their true selves.
