A Brief Look at the Humanities: Western Philosophy
Description
Book Introduction
Cumulative views exceed 2 million!
Naver Best Challenge Comics Highest Rating!
A philosophy cartoon recognized by students, parents, and teachers!
"Mom, this is studying! Not a webtoon!"
"I got into it thanks to my child and I'm really enjoying it."
"I'm telling students to keep this in mind while teaching."
The thoughts of every philosopher are the essence of his life.
Strictly speaking, this book is a history of Western philosophy, and studying the lives of philosophers is helpful in studying philosophy.
For example, if you just study Plato and the philosopher-king's ideas, you may get confused.
At this time, we must examine the background that led Plato to come up with the concept of philosopher-kingdom (Plato had the experience of losing his teacher due to mob rule).
In Athens, where all citizens participate in politics, young Plato is shocked to see people, incited by theatrics and mob psychology, sentence Socrates to death.
And I think that rather than leaving politics to the foolish masses, we should leave it to some wise and virtuous people.
Knowing this anecdote will probably make Plato's philosophy a little more familiar.

Publisher's Review
We can all have our own philosophy in our own place.
Studying philosophy is difficult.
It doesn't even make money.
It sometimes feels like the exclusive domain of the wealthy elite who can just stare at the night sky day and night with nothing better to do.
The fact that we get different answers when we ask what philosophy is is also a major cause of confusion.
But when it comes to the simple question of what philosophy is, countless philosophers who would never agree on the same thing agree on one thing.
The point is that simply memorizing other people's thoughts is not philosophy.
Philosophy begins when, while reading the difficult and long history of Western philosophy, I take my eyes off the page for a moment and quietly reflect on myself, “Is this person’s thinking really right?”
The philosophies of the past have only served as giants standing on our shoulders, asking us to climb up.
In that sense, all those who live a life of endless contemplation, review, and criticism in their own positions can be called philosophers.
For example, scientists who think about whether an experiment is truly ethical before conducting it, workers who worry about whether the daily working hours and wage regulations they endure are justified… all of these people are philosophers.
And the world has always been changed by people like this.
Everyone can have their own philosophy in their own place.
That's better than leaving all the philosophy to a few elites sitting at desks.
Although you may be clumsy at first and often find your thoughts inconsistent, and may become dogmatic in your desire to be right, this can be easily resolved if you learn to refine your thinking.
You can get plenty of practice in the process of learning about the thoughts of philosophers and their criticisms.
Although the study may be a bit difficult, the stories of the philosophers we have only briefly seen in this book will be of some help in the process.
Philosophy is progressive, and the challenge toward progress is ours.
Hegel believed that philosophy progresses.
That is why I have said that “the most recent philosophy is the most developed, deep, and rich philosophy.”
If so, we, who were born 200 years later, can naturally develop a more developed, deeper, and richer philosophy.
The challenge belongs to all of us.
Was the night sky that the philosopher, who had been walking with his gaze raised and had stumbled over a rock, looking up at, truly his own?
I hope that one day we can all look up at the night sky together and freely discuss our philosophies.

I am a third-year student majoring in ethics education and dreaming of becoming an ethics teacher.
There is a prejudice that philosophy is a boring and dull subject, but I think you are showing that this is not the case.
I also want to become a teacher who can teach philosophy in a fun way someday.
