Into the book
Identity refers to the extent to which you understand what is important to you and what is meaningful to you, and make decisions about the direction of your life based on that understanding.
What you do is important to your identity, but that doesn't mean your identity has to be about your job.
It could be a principle of life that you want to keep anytime and anywhere, or a value that you want to pursue no matter where or what you do.
---From "Chapter 1: What is Identity?"
People often understand other people's lives in noun form.
Where does that person live, where does that person work, what kind of car does that person drive, that person didn't even go to college...
But it is arrogant to think that you can understand someone like that.
Just as you can't define your own life with a single noun, you can't define someone else's life with a single noun either.
Because life is a story.
---From "Chapter 2 Life Cannot Be Defined by a Single Noun"
In this way, people have many aspects diachronically, but they also have many aspects synchronically.
Even if you drink the same alcohol, the way you look when you drink with a close friend will definitely be very different from the way you look when you drink with professors or students from your department.
The greatest power of stories is their ability to harmoniously integrate multiple, sometimes conflicting, aspects that are difficult to logically integrate.
---From "Chapter 3 Perfect or Messy"
How many clothes do you usually try on when buying clothes? Sometimes, even after trying on countless pieces, you still can't find one you like.
But sometimes, I like the clothes I try on for the first time and buy them right away without much thought.
Finding your own identity is similar.
You can try this path and that path to find your true path, but the path you've been walking so far may naturally become your path.
---From "Chapter 4: Do I really have to try on several pieces of clothing before buying them?"
Whether we create meaning or find meaning may be a very important philosophical question, but there is no need to debate which is correct here.
My position on this is this:
Since there is no such thing as meaning in the world, meaning is created, but the process of creating meaning feels like finding meaning empirically.
Whether you create meaning or find it, the important thing is to give meaning to your life story.
---From "Chapter 5: The Two Hunger of the Bushmen"
Frankl said that what a person in despair needs most is to see hope for the future.
To see hope is to realize the meaning of what must be accomplished and what must be lived.
As Nietzsche said, those who know why to live can overcome any difficult situation.
When you know why you live, when you realize the meaning of life, you gain the strength to overcome any difficult situation.
---From "Chapter 6: Dark Ages, Read as Climax"
As we live, we encounter countless stories.
Perhaps today, you heard various stories from someone and told various stories to someone.
Most stories evaporate with the breath the moment they are told.
But some stories stay with us and are tied together with a single meaning.
It is a mystery why, how, and what kind of stories remain with us.
Whatever the process, the story that remains with us becomes life.
What you do is important to your identity, but that doesn't mean your identity has to be about your job.
It could be a principle of life that you want to keep anytime and anywhere, or a value that you want to pursue no matter where or what you do.

Publisher's Review
Why should I know who I am?
The surest way to live as your true self
“Self-esteem based on your own story remains strong even in difficult situations.”
In February 2020, global idol group BTS released their 4th full-length album 'MAP OF THE SOUL: 7', which contained their honest stories.
BTS portrayed the process of affirming their true selves by accepting both their 'persona', that is, the 'me' they 'want to show to the world' and the 'me' they want to ignore, the inner shadow they've been hiding.
Like BTS, we all have moments when we want to look cool, and moments when we want to turn away or correct.
There are strengths that we can confidently show off to others, and there are also weaknesses that we prefer not to reveal.
Embracing all of these things naturally becomes part of my life story.
Through that story, you can figure out who your 'true self' is and take the first step toward accepting yourself as you are and building a 'strong' self-esteem.
The surest way to live a fulfilling and happy life.
This is why we need to find out who we are through our life stories.
One college student who participated in the author's research wrote at the end of his life story that the times when he could achieve things without trying and the times when he was frustrated and in pain served as a "shadow" that created the "cheerful" person he is today.
The images formed in different times form a synchronic and diachronic fusion, which becomes the foundation for living as a complete self.
Telling your own life story helps you discover the meaning of life, not how you ruined it, but how you found it.
This will soon become a strong inner self-esteem that will give you the strength to overcome any difficult situation.
The best way to discover your true self is
Take a peek into my life story!
Finding your identity means finding the core of yourself hidden within the shell.
In this book, I want to make the somewhat strange and outlandish, yet true, claim that the way to find your identity—that is, to find your core—is to write your life story.
Everyone has their own life story, and we are all protagonists in that story.
- From the introductory text
Sometimes I feel suffocated, as if I'm wearing clothes that don't fit me.
It's clearly my self-introduction, but it feels awkward and unfamiliar. I worked hard to get into this job, but I feel like this isn't the path for me, so I think about quitting every day.
I thought I knew myself better than anyone else, but at the moment of countless choices, I suddenly became confused as to whether this was really what I liked and whether this was what I wanted to do.
I keep wondering endlessly about who I am, and discovering my true self feels like finding a needle in a haystack.
The reason the question, “Who am I?” is difficult is because we rarely have the experience of reflecting on ourselves through our life stories.
Life cannot be explained in simple nouns.
To truly know who I am and discover my identity, I need to look into the stories of my life experiences.
When we discover and accept the unknown side of ourselves through our life stories, we can finally find our identity and stand as our true selves.
Professor Park Seon-woong of the Department of Psychology at Korea University shows in his book, “The Psychology of Identity,” how life stories shape our identity through various examples.
As you look back on your life story, this book will be of great help in discovering the true 'me' you never knew you had, and in accepting the complete 'me' as it is.
About 'identity' to make today happier and live true to myself.
“So what’s your story?”
The life stories covered in this book are not those of celebrities or heroes.
This is a story about ordinary people who passed us by today.
My heart flutters because I think a good life might be closer than I thought.
There is no perfect life in this world.
There is no best life.
There is no need to live that kind of life.
A life lived entirely in one's own way is a beautiful life.
I sincerely hope that everyone who reads this book will be able to live a life with good stories.
- Among the outgoing letters
"The Psychology of Identity" is the first work of the author's "Three-Step Identity Project," which began with the hope that modern people, who are suffering from identity confusion due to the harsh social and realistic problems such as endless competition, difficulty finding a job in the network, confusion about values, and vague anxiety about the future, will find their true selves.
Don't worry if your story of finding your identity is too ordinary or unremarkable.
The various life stories contained in this book are also all ordinary stories of ordinary people.
Among the countless stories that passed by me today, one may have become someone's life story or even my own.
In an era where living as a complete self is crucial, this book will soothe the anxious hearts of readers who are struggling to find the true meaning of their lives and what they want to do with their lives in the future, and help them restore their identity.
