Lecture on the characters in the Chu-Han Chronicles
Description
Book Introduction
The Chronicles of Chu and Han (楚漢志) is a novel that describes the political situation in Central China from the end of the Jin Dynasty to the beginning of the Western Han Dynasty.
Even if we develop this lecture focusing on the characters who appear in the Chu-Han Conflict, we will briefly look at the historical background before and after the war and the stories covered in 『Chosun-Han Chronicles』, chronologically, not according to the developments in the novel, but according to the time when actual historical events occurred.
Since it was a story about war, victory or defeat was inevitable, and one man, who was relatively weak from the first encounter through most of the war, became Emperor Gao of the Han Empire, which lasted for 400 years and became a model for all subsequent Chinese emperors, while another man, who was the absolute power in the world, ended his short reign with his own fame and sky-high pride.
However, strangely enough, a strange phenomenon occurred in which the defeated generals in war were remembered more often than the victors and were talked about for a long time.
The origin of the game of Janggi (將棋), which is played with 32 pieces (= 16 x 2) in China, Korea, and Japan while shouting "Jang-yo!" and "Meng-yo!", is from the "Records of the Chu and Han" which tells the story of the Chu-Han Conflict, and the story of the final farewell of Xiang Yu and Yu Xi, Farewell My Concubine (?王別姬), is still performed or re-created as plays and movies every day all over the world, so the fact that many people around the world, not just Chinese, are enthusiastic about the story left behind by these two contrasting figures from 2,200 years ago is a special charm of the "Records of the Chu and Han".
