Why Japan Is Obsessed with Korean History Part 3: Commemorating Japan's Annexation of Korea
Why Japan Is Obsessed with Korean History Part 3: Japan Commemorates the Annexation of Joseon
Description
Book Introduction
At least every Korean should know
A record from an old photo album I came across in a used bookstore in Tokyo!

On August 29, 1910, the Korean Empire disappeared from history.
The so-called "Annexation Treaty" concluded by the third Resident-General Terauchi and Yi Wan-yong was promulgated in just a week, and the Japanese Empire released a photo album to "commemorate" it.
『Joseon Photo Album Commemorating Annexation』.
It contained the faces of those in power and pro-Japanese collaborators during the Japanese colonial period, as well as the landscape of Joseon as seen through the eyes of the Japanese.
Japan celebrated the incident that we remember as a national disgrace, calling it the 'Gyeongsul Gukchi'.

The author first received this photo album from his uncle, lawyer Lee Sang-hyeok, immediately after completing his military service.
My uncle bought this photo album at the used bookstore street in Kanda, Tokyo.
Later, in 1993, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs published a reprint and distributed it to people around them with the phrase, “Let’s not repeat this shameful history.”
The people and background in the photo were listed without explanation.
That blank space occupied the author's mind for a long time.
“How meaningful would it be if we could add historical context to this scene?”

In 2023, the author's book, "Why is Japan Obsessed with Korean History?", was selected as a Kyobo Bookstore bestseller and Sejong Bookstore's Best Liberal Arts Book, creating a sensation.
He continued the series with 『Baekje Place Names and Shrines in Japan』, which explored Baekje relics by directly visiting various parts of Japan.
And this year, the 80th anniversary of liberation and the 120th anniversary of the Eulsa Treaty, he returned with the 『Joseon Photo Album Commemorating Annexation』.
The aim was to add commentary to the scenes in the photos, to show the past and the present intertwined, and to ask how we should face and remember the past.

This book is not simply a commentary on an old photo album.
It is a historical piece of evidence that vividly reminds today's readers of the reality of the annexation that Japanese imperialism 'celebrated'.
At the same time, it reminds us that history is not a stuffed record of the past, but a mirror that reflects the present and tomorrow.
The moment we forget our past mistakes, the same mistakes are repeated.
But only when we face that painful history can we hope for a better future.
"Why Is Japan Obsessed with Korean History 3: Japan Commemorates the Annexation of Joseon" is not simply a history book; it is a weighty question posed to all those who seek to move forward into the future through memory and reflection.
