Mahan's maritime strategy and national policy
Mahan's maritime strategy and national policy
Description
Book Introduction
Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840-1914), one of the most influential theorists in naval history.
He is a maritime strategist and naval historian, and a representative figure who preached the importance of naval power to the world.
Through some 20 books and 137 articles, including The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660–1783 (published in 1890) and The Influence of Sea Power upon the French Revolution and Empire, 1793–1812 (published in 1892), he played a decisive role in systematizing the importance of naval strategy and naval power.

He emphasized, through historical examples, that maritime power is essential for the interests and prosperity of a nation.
By analyzing the history of naval battles, I tried to prove that "maritime power alone cannot make a nation great, but maritime power is essential to becoming a great power, and through it, it can exert pressure on other nations."
In particular, he argued that the United States must re-evaluate the importance of maritime power based on historical lessons and possess a strong naval force.

Although his theories were later criticized for their limitations due to their age, the insights he demonstrated in the field of maritime strategy remain valid to this day.
In particular, his ideas played a pivotal role in the evolution of the U.S. Navy and maritime policy, and his strategic thinking remains deeply rooted within the Navy.

The task of selecting and collecting Mahan's research achievements and ideas into a single book was a difficult process.
However, considering the fact that there are not many books related to Mahan in Korea, I hope that this book will serve as an introductory text to understanding his thoughts.
In particular, I hope that the importance of maritime power and the navy that Mahan emphasized will be well conveyed to readers.
