Mom's School
Description
Book Introduction
* Click for author interview! When the publisher first came to promote this book, my first impression was of the author's personal history.
She is from Hansalim and said she is running a ‘Mom’s School’ in a Hanok in Gye-dong, Bukchon.
What a scene it was: sitting on the sunny veranda of a Hanok, with a cup of tea in front of them on a handmade flower cushion, chatting idly about raising children...
When the publisher said they were giving away Mom's School tuition as a promotion, I thought, "Hmm, that'll be a bit of a stretch," before even reading the content.
The next morning, as I sat down to formally review the book, I found myself thinking of a warm, half-sunlit cafe.
“I don’t know about anything else, but it seems like a book that really puts my mind at ease after reading it.” Perhaps it was because of the introduction by the blunt person in charge who seemed to have no interest in children’s education.
This is the book I started reading after leaving the office with a cup of warm herbal tea in front of me.
As I read his preface, which said, "I was grateful for every day, thought about my child's duty, and deeply engraved the meaning of spending time with my child every day, so my heart was at peace and happy," tears streamed down my face.
It wasn't because the parents, who had good hearts, raised the two children so well that anyone could tell they were doing well.
Don't say things like that to your child, let them play some games to develop their brain, teach them how to set limits early...
As someone who was tired of the do's and don'ts of so many parenting books, I found myself nodding along to his parenting method of 'playing and growing together' with my child, just like water flowing.
Raising children is such a happy thing, says this book, patting and comforting the backs of anxious parents.
The author's writing style is as refined as a flower petal, but the content is full of substance.
Just by following the play the author played with children, you can learn the essence of play methods that develop the five senses, proper reading guidance methods, and non-hurtful conversation methods recommended in most parenting books.
It would be great if both angry parents and parents who have read Lifetime Achievement would read it at least once and reflect on what kind of mindset we should have toward each other before raising a smart child.
Today, we learn about childhood and parenthood again through 'Mom School'.
-----------------
If I may add one more thing, I paid the price of raising a child.
A child is a beautiful flower that is beautiful and lovely, and does not wither even after sleeping, and is incomparable to anything else in this world.
Living with children is the greatest blessing.
The child is in his mother's arms and has no doubts.
I trust my mom completely.
How many times in our lives have we received such overwhelming support?
Because I gave birth to the child, the child trusts me like this.
I decided that I had to endure the hardships of living with such a child.
Even if you buy a handkerchief, you have to pay a price, so I couldn't help but pay a price for receiving this kind of love from my child.

Into the book
Children are bundles of curiosity.
The world is so new and exciting that I wander around the house, exploring every corner.
Our house was a playground for children everywhere.
I let the child look at, touch, hear, and taste everything he was curious about.
Instead of tying the cupboard or sink doors with string, I let them out and play without any string.
The children took out all the dishes and stacked them up like a tower or lined them up like a castle.
I also went into the empty cupboard and played.
The child was as cute as a doll in a box.
Glassware is also a great toy when an adult is present to watch over it.
Put aside the glass, which can quickly turn into a weapon the moment it breaks, and line up bowls of various shapes, sizes, colors, and materials, and tap them with chopsticks to make a sound.
There is a different sound when using metal chopsticks and wooden chopsticks, and there is a different sound when there is water in the bowl and when there is not.
There is no separate 'Nanta'.
The same goes for cosmetics.
Children are curious, but cosmetics keep going up high out of reach of children, so their desires are never satisfied.
I tried it out with my kids, painted it, and smelled it.
Let's find out: cosmetics can keep their place even on a low vanity without having to evacuate.
Children like small spaces and enjoy playing in the closet.
When I put in and take out the blankets in the morning and evening, if the children see me, all the blankets will be thrown out and become a tent or a curtain.
They would make a sled out of blankets and put the children on it, and when they were really excited, they would make a sled out of a thin blanket and put the children in it and carry it around like Santa Claus.
I even went inside the closet and slept.
Sometimes it was a bit jarring to see the blankets hanging out like their intestines had been taken out, but what can you do, kids have things they want to do and that's their daily routine.
There is no need to struggle when cleaning up.
If you play 'cleaning game', it will be cleaned up in no time.
The method is simple.
Just start cleaning up like a game, saying, "Who can clean up first?"

Hongwon started stuttering badly when he was six years old.
When you raise a child, there are times when that happens.
Same goes for other children.
It seemed to be a phenomenon that occurred because thoughts came very quickly but words did not follow.
Usually, children stutter without even noticing, but Hongwon stuttered for three months.
This was especially true when speaking hastily.
I pretended not to know anything and treated the child as if nothing had happened, afraid that if the child was nervous it would get worse.
However, whenever the child spoke, I would stop whatever I was doing and listen intently, looking into the child's eyes.
With the mindset of ‘Mom will listen as much as you want, so speak slowly and carefully.’
But there was no progress.
One day, a neighbor brought her grandson from the beauty salon and said in one word, "He stutters."
My mind was blown.
Yes, the child does stutter.
I decided that I couldn't drag it out any longer, so from that day on, I put everything else aside and focused all my energy on correcting my child's speech.
I stayed by her side so she could see her even if she didn't come to see her.
When the child started talking, he responded with an expression as if he had been preparing to speak since before he was born.
I tried my best not to interfere, fearing that the child would become anxious and stop talking, and if he stuttered a lot, I would say a word or two.
"huh.
Hongwon-ah, your mom is listening.
Hongwon will always listen to everything I say.
It doesn't matter how long it takes.
As much as you want.
So, speak slowly."
Slowly, step by step.
I felt my speech change.
Looking at my son made me reflect on my tone of speech.
I tried to speak at a more appropriate pace and tried to change my tone to make it more pleasant to hear.
It seems like I'm raising a child, but I'm not.
My child raises me.

You learn sacrifice and courage.
It also develops patience.
When you go through difficult things, you learn more at once.
When my child stuttered, I started to reflect on many things and I grew up a lot.

When I had my two children, I was a student and had to read a lot, but even after I finished my studies, I was still interested in my role as a housewife, environmental issues, the realities of agriculture, and community activism, so I read books about them.
So there were always books around.
Children not only looked at books, but also played with them like toys, building castles and towers with them.
Because I learned so much through books, I wanted to share the secrets of books with my children.

Taekyung, a third-year middle school student, spent a lot of time at home because he didn't go to school.
During that time, I learned sign language little by little every day using the computer.
After I learned some sign language, I taught it to my younger sibling and we used it to share all our secrets.
If you look closely, it was used as a means of conversation in a space that should be quiet, such as an elevator.
It looked very useful.
He became a bold student who went to school and taught his friends, sometimes having secret conversations during class.
I found out later that it had also created a sign language boom among all the children in my class.
After learning a little sign language, I learned Braille on the computer.
When I asked my child why he was learning Braille, he said that he would hold the Braille book close to his chest and read it before falling asleep because it was annoying to have to turn off the lights when he fell asleep while reading at night.
The after-school classroom experience was also invaluable to our children.
At Banwon Elementary School, where my children attended, there was a teacher who had published seven math books and was giving free after-school classes to the children, but all the students were taken away by private academies, and it was a real waste of time.
This was because many people were looking for teachers in the school park, ignoring the teachers who had received regular education at the school.
Regardless of grade, we chose students and both of our children studied with that teacher.
I was treated with the utmost respect by the teacher, as I was one of only five or six precious students sent by the teacher.
Embarrassingly, I occasionally received thank you letters from teachers.

Publisher's Review
1.
Is it a dream to live with a child like this in Korea?
No mother wants to raise her child to be a child who only studies well.
There is no mother who only wants her child to be a good-natured and kind child.
I want to raise my child to be well-rounded in intelligence, virtue, and physical strength, who studies well, plays well, is recognized by his friends, and gets along well with his family.
Seo Hyung-sook's two children grew up to be young men who have all the qualities that every mother wishes her children would have.
Both children grew up to be globally minded individuals, citizens who know how to serve their neighbors and society, and leaders who enjoy the full support of their friends.
This was possible because I was not swayed by the private education system even though I lived in Gangnam, the number one place for private education.
Instead, Teacher Seo Hyung-sook provided a better education than what money could provide.
When they were very young, we let them play freely to develop their five senses. As they grew older, we helped them develop confidence and consideration. As they grew older, we watched them grow and helped them navigate the wide world on their own.
It was an education that provided the necessary stimulation at the necessary time.
A child who receives support and love from his mother, rather than interference, is bound to be different both at school and outside of school.
2.
If you learn and practice how to be a good mother, your child's happiness and success will follow.
What makes his teaching method different is that he started his education with the idea of 'what kind of mother is a good mother' in mind even before becoming a mother.
There was no wavering because the education was focused solely on 'what my child truly wants.'
Just as many mothers spend time looking at the mix ratio when buying clothes and choosing a good academy, he spent time carefully considering what would make his child happy.
This method makes both mother and child happy.
(My daughter's friend said, 'Even if an angel came down, he wouldn't be as kind as Taekyung.
How could a mother not be happy when she receives a letter saying, 'Thank you, Mom, for giving me Taekyung as a friend'?) Plus, it's so easy and simple that it doesn't cost any money and mom doesn't have to act as a manager by coordinating the academy schedule.
But why do so many mothers choose the wrong path over the easy one? Even though we all want our children to succeed and live better lives than we did.
The reason is that when greed comes first, we become impatient and sometimes treat our children carelessly, and when everyone is running wild with their educational fervor, we can't help but feel anxious.
If you look closely, there are yoga, sewing, and pottery classes, but there are no mom schools that teach the mindset that a good mother should have.
'Mom's School' will teach Korean mothers, who are anxious about their children due to their educational fever, that raising children is an easy and enjoyable task.
Just as you learn how to cook, you also have to learn how to be a mother.
Raising a child becomes easier when you learn and train yourself to be a mother.
Even the most difficult educational problem in Korea can be easily solved.
3. Are you so exhausted from raising and educating your children that you forget that you are happy to be a mother?
'Will my child survive this fierce educational war?'
Living in Korea, a country with a fever for education, many mothers have long since forgotten the moments when they felt happy just by smelling their child's body.
Even confident mothers who have not entered the educational competition feel uneasy at the thought that their convictions might be preventing their children from even entering the competition.
To mothers who worry like this, to mothers who live forgetting how happy it is to be a mother, Ms. Seo Hyeong-suk of Mom School speaks confidently.
They say that if you 'let your child play without any worries when they are young', 'wait for them', and 'let them make their own choices', education is bound to be successful.
Furthermore, it is natural that the child's life and the parents' life become happy.
