Into the book
Most of the words that comforted me were whispers.
Even the sentences written in letters and one or two lines of text messages often came across as a whisper.
At that time, the text was not read.
It was a feather.
At that time, I didn't listen to what he said.
It was flowing in.
That I am still by your side, that I will not forget or lose you, that I will not stop cheering you on until the future becomes the past, that tomorrow will be better… … That is how the whisper came, like holding your hand, touching your forehead, patting your shoulder.

--- pp.14-15

On days like that, I want to write something.
No, I don't think I can sleep unless I write something.
The wall must be removed so that what was flowing can flow again.
We need to continue the conversation that didn't end properly.
I should say thank you.
I have to say sorry.
The story that was interrupted in the middle must be restarted.
We have to meet.
You have to make eye contact.
There are so many things I haven't said yet, so I always feel humble when I write.
So people become good at night.
It only gets better at night.

Even if you lose more than you gain, I hope you don't keep counting it.
There's still a chance that you'll be struggling because you can't say no, but I hope you don't end up hurting your body and mind by trying to do something you can't do.
I wish I could protect you.
No matter how busy you are, I hope you don't neglect to take care of yourself.
I hope you become a better person than I am now.

They say that people who are close to the night become deeper inside.
It has no choice but to deepen on its own.
Because regret eats away at my insides.
Because thoughts burn inside me.
When the inside becomes empty, the depth will naturally become deeper.
Even though I couldn't deal with the depth of the night, it seemed like the feelings I couldn't express during the day would pile up.

--- p.56

I was always nervous.
It was something that crept in at some point.
Rather than feeling lost or restless in the moment, I felt like I was immersed in it.
That's what makes my heart beat.
'Life' becomes 'being alive'.

--- p.84

There are people who cry because they are alone, and there are people who can't help but cry because they are alone.
A story told alone grows bigger when shared.
I followed him and before I knew it, I was sobbing too.
In the pitch-black night, black and black met and became black and black.

Brushing past something requires some distance.
If it is very close, it is a collision, and if it is even slightly far away, it is a passing.
The distance that seems close enough to touch, the state that seems close enough to float up, makes it possible to brush past.
There are very few things that leave traces immediately after a brush.
It is only after the matchstick has completely burned out that we realize something has burned.

--- p.129

At night, I thought of you.
It felt like I was reliving the times I spent with you.
I wish we had a little more time.
How happy I would be if I could love a little more.
Night is the time when we get closer to the family.

--- p.176

If you keep knocking, the door will open.
Even if the door doesn't open, someone will respond.
Even the doorknob will fall off.
Every time he clenched and unclenched his fist, sweat dripped down his face, and he thought it looked just like tears.

--- p.185

If you listen closely to the sound of the rain, you can hear that the countless raindrops are each muttering to themselves.
As he listened to the sound of the rain, T was suddenly struck by the thought that he might not be alone.

--- p.198

After a deep night, a gentle dawn came without fail.
The sky will meet the sun.
Buildings that are tightly closed all night will meet people.
The road will meet cars and the tracks of their wheels will be etched into its surface.

Publisher's Review
A handwritten essay that captures the poet's heart and examines my own.
As we write each sentence deep into the night, we become a little kinder.

Poet Oh Eun, who has won awards such as the Park In-hwan Literary Award and the Daesan Literary Award and has been much loved by readers for her poetry collections “We Love the Atmosphere” and “From You to You,” has published her handwritten essay “People Who Only Become Kind at Night” by Wisdom House.
This book offers a special and dense reading experience, with 24 emotional essays written with a pure sense of the night, and a writing space where you can copy the poet's sentences.

“Night is the time of rising.” It is the time when longed-for faces, past words, and forgotten emotions suddenly come back to me.
Stories that begin with verbs that come to mind in the middle of the night, such as 'whisper', 'flow', 'long', 'write', 'thump', and 'tilt', continue with sentences that slowly soothe the depths of the heart.

“They say that people who are close to the night become deeper inside, and that they cannot help but become deeper on their own.”

Why do we become kinder at night? During the day, we're immersed in the intense rhythm of life, but as night deepens, in the silence, the voice of our hearts finally begins to be heard.
A time when words I had said without thinking come to mind, faces I thought I had forgotten start to miss, and words I had not said fill me with regret.
Those moments at night make us a little more thoughtful and kinder people.

My nightly routine of reading, writing, and hugging myself
On a night when you need comfort, if one sentence can become a kind friend

"People Who Become Good Only at Night" is not just a simple handwritten book; it helps you look inside yourself by tracing out heart-warming sentences by hand.
As I follow the poet Oh Eun's sentences, which are full of the emotions of the night, the act of writing itself becomes a healing experience.
In particular, since poet Oh Eun's own handwriting is included throughout the book, I can quietly compare my own heart with the poet's.
Handwriting, which has a different warmth from printed letters, allows us to feel the poet's heart even closer.

Additionally, this book was published alongside “Come Slowly” by poet Yoo Hee-kyung, a longtime friend of poet Oh Eun who has shared a special friendship with her.
The structure of one book extending its heart to another, adding "Words of Friends" that reveal deep affection for one another, resonates deeply with the reader and shows new possibilities for literature written and read together.

Transcription is a process of fully acquiring sentences in a different way than reading.
It is about feeling the warmth of the text through your fingertips and reviving forgotten sensations.
When the poet's sentences are rewritten through my hands, they become the poet's heart and my heart at the same time.
By following the poet's lines, we finally encounter our own language.

"People Who Only Become Kind at Night" is a book you'll want to keep by your side on days when you're feeling a little weary or when you need some comfort.
It serves as a warm resting place for readers who want to listen to the voice of their hearts in the quiet time of night.
As we write sentences that quietly embrace us at the end of the day, we may find ourselves becoming slightly better people.

On those nights when you can't sleep unless you write something, this book will be your best friend.
